Happy Easter! I've been asked many times to share how I hold my hook and yarn. How do you hold your hook and yarn? Do you do it in a way that you've never seen others do it? I'd love to know! x

I used to hold my hook like a pencil but I found that I was getting really painful hands and wrist. Since I swapped to hold it like a knife the pain has gone.

So few on KZbin seems to use the pen hold, but I do. I am completely unable to hold my hook like a knife. When I finally caught on that people held their hooks that way, I was really surprised. I tried it, felt like a monkey using eating utensils, LOL. It is very awkward for me, painfully slow, literally cannot do it, hurts my arm, but I hold my hook pen style, very loosely and back from the hook, but still using the thumb rest, doing all the motion with my fingers and I can speed along. I cannot use short handled hooks because they make me lose control, such as the Clover Soft Touch with the very short handle. I crocheted for years and years before I even noticed anyone held differently than I do, wasn't aware anyone did differently. This could come from being a master hand quilter since the 1980's, not really sure. What is great is that everyone can hold their hook whichever way is most comfortable for them; no one is wrong! That's so cool and we can do what is the best way for each of us. ~Cynthia

Rsi happens when not held right. I read all the time re people in pain.. I had two ladies in my crochet class were relieved to be shown the Patons way to hold hook and thread I still have the book. The nuns showed me all that. Never been in pain ever. I cringe watching how some people crochet.

I'm 57 and was taught to crochet by an elderly family friend when I was 9. The "right" way is whatever way is most comfortable and natural for each person. I hold my hook overhand and always have. I've never had any issues with yarn or thread tension to date. The "right" way is whatever works best for YOU. ~ APRIL LIPKE

I had to really evaluate how I hold my hook😊I am self taught and have been crocheting for maybe 20 yrs now. I hold the hook like a baby would hold their spoon 😀. The hand with the hook does most of the work. I tried it your way and it was ok. My tension was much tighter. I didn’t realize I was a loose crocheter. Thank you for addressing this. It’s nice to learn other ways of crocheting.

I used to crochet with a pen hold of my book and wrap my yarn around my fingers. I then had 3 strokes. The last two happened together last year April 26th. That changed everything and I almost gave it up because my left arm and hand was affected and I'm a lefty. My neurologist told me that I need to keep practicing because it's the best therapy for my left hand. I'm happy to say, I'm crocheting a lot now but had to adjust how I hold my hook and yarn. Now I hold my hook knife style. Thank you for your tutorial! Everyone has a personal way of crocheting and that's the best way for them!

Experiment! For myself, I've tried both hook grips, but find that I have more control with the "knife" grip with less stress from hand/wrist movement. Also, because I broke my left hand pinky years ago (I'm right-handed), I cannot hold the yarn tension with that finger and have had to adapt, using my left ring finger. So, experiment to see what works for you. TIP: To avoid abrasion from yarn on your pointer finger, temporarily place an adhesive bandaid on that finger when crocheting. It works! 😉

Pero en este video aprendí que puedo pasar el ganchillo por debajo de mi dedo índice para no lastimar la parte de arriba de mi dedo, que es lo que siempre me ha pasado. I got commissioned for a baby blanket! I finally learned single stitch 😅. I'm also working on a lap blanket for my mom, it goes from navy blue to purple (using chunky hand dyed merino, its beautiful) I've taken to using whatever feels comfortable at the time. Sometimes I use Boye aluminum hooks and other times I use inline (bates) wood hooks. I can't use actual Bates hooks because of the burrs on the hook point. With wood hooks if the tip is too rough for me I can get some fine grit sandpaper or a rough rock (I'm a rock hound so I have many rocks with various textures.

I use both ways of holding my hook. I too am self taught both knitting and crochet. I always used the pencil (spoon) hold until I had a commission to do 2 sets of crocheted hat and scarf for a made for TV movie. I was under deadline working fast and long hours ending up irritating my thumb base joint. So painful I could hardly finish the second set. I switched to the knife hold and was able to meet my deadline. I prefer the pencil hold but still use both on occasion.

Oh, me too!!!! And I feel SO embarrassed about crocheting in front of other crocheters!!!! Sometimes though I think that it can make my work lean to the left. It's okay when working first one way and then back in the opposite direction. Do you find that too?? I can hold the yarn in my left hand, BUT, I am SO slow and tension is a big problem. I do realise that practise, practise, practise would make it feel more natural, but I am too impatient and just want to get on with my creation!!! I wonder how many other prior knitters also hold their yarn in this more natural way when crocheting.........

I hold my hook like yours and have been crocheting since aage 13 (66 yrs old now) Reecently started amigurumi and find my tension is better when I hold my hook like a dinner knife. Having so much trouble with tension, mine is too loose. And I cant crochet or knit with yarn wrapped around my other fingers. Any tips?

@PlayHookywithMe Жыл бұрын
Oh boy , that’s a toughy. I seldom hold like a knife so I’m not sure what could help your tension other than maybe pinching your yarn between forefinger and middle finger. Or a yarn ring that holds it for you. I got this for my daughter in law because she holds her yarn in the crook of her forefinger and she was getting stiff. She holds like a knife as well so maybe that might work? Keep me posted 🧶💕

I have never been able to crochet with the yarn wrapped around any finger. I seem to be able to maintain tension only by letting the yarn slide between between my index and middle finger.

This is always so funny to me how I NEVER saw anyone crochet the way I do xD I feel no pain at all, I am a tight crocheter and my tension is always very comfortable for me and consistent. I am 25 and I was tought absolute basics when about 7 yo. after that I would just figure out things on my own. BUT I learned how to comfortably hold a hook and yarn myself and listen to this: I keep the yarn under my closed pinky and ring finger. Then the yarn comes out from between the ring and middle finger. and now the weirdo part: the pointing and thumb of the left hand I use to hold my work. I dont use my hook hand to yarn over. I yarn over by twisting my wrist over the hook. And as for the hook hand. I keep my pointing finger on the yarn loop to move it up and down closer to the hook part... how exactly it works??? I have no clue. All I know is I somehow came up with it as a kid, its super comfortable for me and I move my hands much more during the process than anyone I ever saw crocheting. XD Thank u for coming to my ted talk. This would make so much more sense for ppl if it was recorded xD

I’m very new to crocheting but I’ve put it down multiple times whenever I pick it up. I keep running into the issue of both things getting caught in the hook. Like the things I’m pulling and the thing I’m not. Does anyone know why? I really want to do this but I can’t seem to fix this issue 😢 Is this a tension thing or do I need to get a larger/smaller hook?
@PlayHookywithMe
@PlayHookywithMe 6 ай бұрын
It could be the type of hook you’re using but I find more it has to do with it’s the direction of the hook itself when it’s going through the loops. If it’s catching see if you can rotate so the hook is pointing more downward or whatever direction stops it from catching . 👍🏻💕

My Great Aunt watched me crochet for a few stitches when I was sixteen then gave me a comment I will never forget. KZbin did not exist and PBS was not a thing in my day. I was self taught using a free booklet I picked up when I purchased the yarn and crochet hook. She said it looked like I was doing it backwards. I have no idea what that meant unless she held her hook in the knife position. Little did she know that it was her whom I wanted to impress with my work. That was 54 years ago and it still bothers me to this day.
