How To Crossover In Hockey - Like MacKinnon
The contrarian guide to crossovers. In fact, we kill the notion of the crossover and declare a new term: "Crossunder". In this breakdown, we show how the term Crossunder more accurately defines MacKinnon's movement - and how you can use this terminology and new mechanics to improve your transition speed.

This is crazy, mechanically he's getting like an extra half step on everyone he goes against by switching to the inside leg like that. No wonder he can blow by defenders. He's a monster, but they're not even playing the same game.

I’d have to focus on it next practice, but I’m pretty sure I’ve always pushed off my inside foot and used my outside foot as almost like a guide.

I never played hockey but I started training for it at 15 as I never had a coach to teach me a crossover I naturally learned the crossunder so it's really a natural mechanic I can tell for sure

Yes, you may notice it’s easier to naturally use gravity, eh? A crossunder is supposed to feel natural and easy, so keep doing that! -Coach Mason

Interesting concepts to be playing with. He does have a very unique style of skating to generate agility.

@Kent Horvath your 100% right but there are certain body types and some people are just born more naturally athletic. That's why so many pro players have parents who played at a high level too. Genes do have a role in sports

What's the more common way to do crossovers? I've been teaching myself to skate and I've been practicing the outside edge to outside edge drills I see figure skaters and hockey players warm up with. I think they're called forward rollovers. After feeling nice and comfortable on the outside edge I do linear crossovers. Going left I roll left ankle and put all weight on that outside edge, crossover right foot while pushing with outside edge of left foot, right foot comes down and push with inside edge of right foot while bringing left foot back out, do inside edge turn on left foot to turn to the right and repeat the same thing but with the outside edge of right foot. Is that a crossover or cross under?

Lots of ways, best answer is to do the movement with how it feels most natural to your body.

@@Train2point0 Crossing over and crossing under are used in 2 different scenarios, and all players do both. This is why I found this video to be quite confusing, as it focused on cherry picking cross under examples (when MacKinnon does plenty of cross overs as well). Here's the difference: - Cross unders are used when your primary direction of movement is FORWARD, and you want to change your direction slightly but still generate explosive speed in the forward direction. Notice how in all the clips MacKinnon is moving in the forward direction and not gaining speed to change directions. - Cross overs are used when you're TURNING or CHANGING direction (i.e. accelerating out of a circle). In these cases, your outside leg (inside edge) will step over your inside leg much more significantly, and you'll generate power from that outside leg push to facilitate the change in direction. All players do both, and as a beginner you should start to learn how to do cross overs first to get a hang of your outside edge (common exercise is skating around a faceoff circle and maintaining a solid glide on your outside edge). Once you're comfortable on your outside edge, then you can try doing cross unders where you're primarily skating forward, but are changing your directly slightly and pushing off your outside edge to generate power. Hope this helps @crimsonkatsu5!

Hi Jason, a bit of a noob question, but when you are performing crossovers, what part of the blade should you be putting your weight? Toe? Heel? Or even over the entire blade?
@Train2point0
@Train2point0 Жыл бұрын
Heel Pressure = weight to your heels! You may initially land on other parts of the blade, but when you try this out next use your heels :) -Coach Mason

This may be a nitpicky question but I watch some skating coaches on here and with the super loose “coach sweats” when they do crossovers and skating drills; it just seems like AT LEAST a 50% mobility advantage NOT wear full gear. As far as tilting and leaning and moving their feet w the added benefit of not wearing full gear. What’s your view on how much gear interferes in the finer points of edge work training? (And of course for guys like Crosby and McKinnon gear makes no difference…. I’m talking about a Junior B or A level player). It almost seems like until you’re Pro advanced skating drills would have more impact if players wore only loose sweats, helmet and gloves only to learn and feel those outer ranges of motion and full extension etc. thanks

I am a skating coach and I did majority of my videos in a track suit and I could get way better range of motion. Today I put on gear to shoot my videos and my god... gear definitely is a huge factor in range of motion

I’m not convinced an analytic video like this can help, you need to be on ice with a power skating coach. I guess anyone can take a clip of a top player, then create a video called ‘skate like Captain Fantastic’.
