Do you need to cure the upper edge too? And all sides of the pestle? Or do you prefer to have a smooth end and a gripping end?

@@Mexicoinmykitchen Yes!!! Time to bring back home cooked meals. All this processed foods and "fast foods" is just not what I want my kids eating. I grew up on with my mom and grandmother cooking the exact same meals. And I want to learn as much as I can so that my kids can pass that down as well. I would love to see a recipe for gorditas de elote. Las que son de azúcar 😋

I didn't know to do this when I bought mine a couple of months ago. I used the pestle to smooth the sides a bit. There is now cumin and other spices ground into the surface. Is there any long term benefit of using rice specifically? Or is it mostly for use as a media for the grinding?

Hi, I have been grinding the rice in my molcajete. I have done it 3 times, but there are still deep pits in it. Mine is lava rock, do I continue grinding to make it smooth?
@Mexicoinmykitchen
@Mexicoinmykitchen 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Gloria, some molcajetes have larger porous than others. The porosity helps to grind the ingredients you place in there. With time and use, the molcajete will become smooth. Just make sure that it doesn't release any more dust from the lava rock before using. Happy cooking!

I bought the big beast from a Mexican market. I thought I was just buying a mortar and pestle. It was rough looking but I ground it for 2 hrs with water until the water went from mud to clear. Then I let it dry and did the rice method. I’m only using for dry spices though. If this thing isn’t authentic then I’d like to see a real one. I got it smooth as marble 😂
