How to CUT an arris rail. Like a pro ! CUTTING ARRIS RAIL ENDS - SCARF - TENON
If you are going to install traditional closeboard fencing, you will at some point need to cut an arris rail then scarf - tenon the end. Unless you are finishing with a full bay at the end, or you are lucky enough that the bays fit your space perfectly.
This video will show you how to do this, and you only need a Jigsaw or an Adze.
You can of course buy the arris rails pre scarfed but you wont avoid the cut bay at the end and if you do this yourself you can save a couple of £ per rail.
Needing 3 rails pre 6ft high bay, this all adds up to a hefty saving !
If you would like any questions answered at all please ask in the comment section below and i would be happy to answer them.
I hope this will give you the confidence to do this yourself at home.

Followed this to cut three ends yesterday. Nothing wrong with the instructions. Issues I had... I need a better jigsaw. My old 350w mains one struggled with the last of the three cuts. I also have no idea how you do this just holding the rail. Hats off! I struggled to get it clamped as well due to the shape. That's partly connected to the jigsaw struggling I think. Got there in the end though! Used an auger bit and then flat 25mm bit to drill series of holes for the post slots. Found I could use the 25mm bit with care at an angle to clear the rest of the hole and finish with chisel. A bit rough but fine for a fence post.

Yeah there is a bit of a nack to it i have to say but dry wood and a decent jigsaw blade really helps. Corded jig id better than battery for power. There is often a setting on jigsaws to change the angle of the blade. This makes a real difference and i wish i added it to the video. Nevermind 🤷‍♂️. Glad you got it sorted in the end 👍

Good video James, I will just stick with my square rails and 100mm screws 😂 we don't often use arris rails up here, but good to see how you do this, excellent information ! 👍

Thankyou for your comment. Maybe its just a southern thing but we do use square rails too. Or cant rails we call them, with a little bevelle on them to allow rain water run off.

Nice work, I've not used arris rails with scafs yet, been using arris brackets which I'm finding very strong, if I were to use the scaf method would the arris rail have to be a couple of inches longer than the bay to sit in the morticed holes on the posts? Sounds a silly question 🤔

Hey thanks. You wont get a stronger connection than a scarf into a mortised post. Essentially itll never come out till the wood rots away. The rails come 3m square ended or pre scarfed. If youre installing on level ground youll find you will need to trim the rails down a couple of centimetres so they fit tight in the mortise and not touch in the middle of the post. Hope thats understandable lol

you don't need the annoying music in the video, especially when it's louder than your voice.

lol if you don’t have an adze then buy pre shaped arris rails 👍🏻 If you don’t know what an adze is then definitely buy pre shaped arris rails! An adze is one of the oldest tools known to mankind, but it’s also one of the hardest tools to use if you think you’ll try to master it for a few rails, better off buying pre shaped arris rails 👍🏻

@@JamesMontana Maybe a bit of music right at the beginning only or if you want to have it thtroughout drop the level much lower compared to your narration. No one needs to listen to the music but it can add an atmosphere if just low in the back. I noticed this more because I started playing this with only my right earphone in. Your narration is mainly on the left channel so I could barely hear you. Video was good and helpful though, thanks. Going to see if you’ve done one on how to make the holes in the posts now :-)
