Well, I must say that this video and your no layers video has explained why the back of my hair looks stringy. I have been doing this cg method for about 5 years now. My hair has gotten thinner and shorter because I thought I needed layers to get body. I was looking at a picture of myself from about 3 years ago. My hair was much longer, fuller, and still curly (2c-3b). I only had long layers, I always told my hairdresser: layer about 2-3 inches on the bottom and blend the front for some face framing layers. She always did a wonderful job. I never did all the product that I'm doing now, soon to stop though, and my hair was thick and full, and I always got comments about how beautiful my hair was. Over the last couple of years, I've noticed all the thinning, stringiness and just general lack of body and curl. I believe all the product, plopping, layering, pigtail cut, (which at first I liked), unicorn cut, etc. has ruined my hair. I think I'm going back to what I've been doing my whole life: wash, condition, put in towel to soak up a little water, gel, scrunch, and air dry, then scrunch out the crunch. I was doing all this way before I ever heard of the curly girl method. Looking at my hair then and looking at it now is disheartening. Thanks for these videos. Going back to what works for me.

Curl by curl is always tricky for me because I always assume my curls are clumping with different clusters every single wash day, so a clump today is probably going to be twisting with its neighbors tomorrow (grin). But yes, all of this. And getting the ends straight in the back is the hardest part! You did a great job!

I KNEW IT! I thought my hair seemed much fuller without layers, but I asked a stylist and she acted like I had no idea what I was talking about. Thank you!!

I love finding hair cutting tutorials! I started cutting my own hair 10 years ago because I got tired of always having to fix it myself when I got home from a stylist. Now I'm wearing it wavy and it's a slightly different ball game so this is helpful!

Thank you! Someone who has hair like mine, greying, especially on the side top, just like you and it's pretty much straight. I started letting my hair grow, when I started my wavy/curly journey, just over 2 years ago. I tried cutting it myself the 1st time & did a hack job, having like 3 inch layer difference, from the bottom to the next layer, like a shelf. Ugh! Thank to you, Jannelle, I think I can fix it without going to a beautician and spending $40 or so. I can't wait for my next wash day. I have been cutting curl-by-curl, too.

I would love to see an updated DIY curly cut from you if you are still doing this! I would love to see how your hair looks now that you are adding fewer layers.

I went through a lot of hair loss and did lots of research in the natural hair community. I can say from personal experience that MSM powder and hair oils like mustard seed, amla, neem, different essentials oils and more potent hair oils (other than the basic ones) help to grow fast and regrow hair. Just throwing that out there for anyone that has slow hair growth 😊.
@nq3526 Жыл бұрын
I've heard about this MSM powder before, I didn't try it yet. Is there any special form that I should buy it in or is any type good?
@courtneyderouen Жыл бұрын
@@nq3526 I use MRM Nutrition MSM crystals from Sprouts but you can order NOW brand free form (loose powder) from Amazon. And you can mix it in anything. Look up Curly Proverbs video on how to use it slowly so you can prevent minor side effects like headaches. You must drink plenty of water too. I had zero side effects but few people don’t tolerate it well. Hope this helps!

I trim my hair, once every 3-4 weeks. I wash it... then comb through it and flip my head down... chin on chest... and then gather my hair and snip off the very thin end on the tip. Then, I’ll finger comb and do this another once or twice... getting all of the scraggly bits. - Once every 6 months, I go for a professional blunt cut... (think of it like a bang trim, just pretty much straight across the back.)

Hi Jannelle-excellent video. Once your layers are grown out, how will you avoid the triangle shape? My layers are now grown out, but I find my naturally styled hair (wavy) looks a bit triangular. TY

I needed this and your last video! I've been doing the pigtail Manes by Mell cut, and the ends in back are so sad! I look like I have no hair! Curse low density fine hair! This was super helpful for the length, do you have any other ideas for the top? I'm not confident enough to pull random curls and snip them! Also, are fairy knots all over an indicator of damage, or could it just be a side effect of fine hair? I trim every 4 weeks. Help!

Thanks Jannelle. Very helpful. Is the idea to cut across the middle of the 'C' curl shape?
@dodgerfan60183 жыл бұрын
Love how your ends look in the back. Sadly, mine still look somewhat scraggly. The shape you have in the back is what I'm hoping to achieve, but I'm an impatient person when it comes to my hair.

I have to have longer layers and cutting the back myself is a nightmare! I have learned over quarantine i can trim the top layers myself and the front, working on how to DIY the back for long layers. I am prone to the “dreaded triangle”, not sure how your hair avoids it 🤔

If you have fine hair, low density it wont ever look triangle. Perhaps you have higher density and thicker hair?

Really risky and can go really wrong for some people. Licensed, trained stylists are really the best option....a lot of people take things into their own hands and end up regretting it.
@JannelleOShaughnessy3 жыл бұрын
That’s not always true. Many licensed professionals don’t know a thing about curly hair as it’s not taught in school. And many stylists even with additional and specific curl training are only taught specific cuts that dont always adopt to individual wants/needs. Then of course there is a factor of accessibility. There are some excellent curly stylists out there but many people don’t have access to a hairstylist that really knows curly hair. Speaking from personal experience, I’ve found a couple of great stylists over the years, and even still, I’ve collectively had more bad cuts from licensed stylists, then I’ve had good. & I know my hair well, what to ask for etc. Not all people will want to take it on at home and that’s okay, but for many, they want and/or need to and there’s nothing wrong with that.
