This is by far the best video on the subject that explains the need to cut the nails short enough! None of the others I’ve seen touched on how far back to cut or how to tell if you’ve cut enough!

I want to thank you for posting this. I have had anxiety badly while cutting my dogs nails. I never got it down to the quick. And I always felt so bad because I knew it wasn't good for her. However, she absolutely hates going into the vet to get it done. So after watching this video while she was relaxed I calmly grabbed the clippers and clipped her nails down to the quick. I made sure to keep my anxiety in check and this was the easiest time of cutting her nails. The quick has grown too long on some nails so I will continue to cut down to the quick weekly to help it shrink. Thank you again for making this video. I know Bailey Boo appreciates it too!!

I don’t own a pet, but for the last two weeks or so, I’ve been watching a LOT of dog grooming videos. This is the first video that EXPLAINED HOW the nail and quick grow together, that the quick RECEDES when exposed to AIR, and HOW to get LONG CLAW-like nails back to NORMAL. Now it all makes sense!!!!! WHEW! Now I can breathe easy!!!! 😂😂😂

I just started researching the whole process of cutting my 2 dogs nails and I gotta tell ya that this video by far has been the most informative. I had in my mind to just cut the tips. But your video has been the ONLY one to explain why that’s a bad idea and why. I would never have imagined getting close to the quick being the best procedure. Also I had been hearing “the quick” but not knowing that was the correct word for “the vein”. I know I sound clueless but now I’m a little less thanks to you. So anyway I’ve decided to go ahead a purchase all the tools to get myself prepared and my girls too (clippers, dremel & styptic powder). I will have to start letting them hear the dremel and letting me manipulate their paws etc. Thanks again for your tips. I’m excited and nervous.

Not on my dog. Dogs feel pain. You never mentioned if there is any pain if we cut to the quick as you described and does not bleed. I know they hurt when the blood flows. What torture this must be to a furbaby. Both physical and physiological. I've never heard to cut so close before. Trim a little and trim more often to wittle the nail into proper and safe length. A jerking fearful dog at trim time can be a nightmare for dog and groomer/nail cutter. Cause a towel to be cut off on small dogs. OUCH

Thank you so very much. I have always wondered about the way to cut my dogs' nails, even to my service dogs; hwr, I have to say it was easier with my service dogs b/c they had a wonderful base cut for me to follow & the fact they were already comfortable with clipping nails made it so much easier. I've been caring for & now that my MIL's little toy fox terrier has come to live with me since my MIL wasn't able to live alone anymore, it has taken months upon months of working with her so she will allow me to touch her nails & even her feet. She will be 10yrs old this Sept. She's never had any regular grooming or trims until about a year ago when she came to stay with me. Even her vet has noticed a major shift in her behavior since coming to live with me bc she has no problems at all with grinding her nails, which I do regularly or rather did until a few months ago when I became ill. Now I have had to resort to clipping her nails. Thank you sooooooooooo much for the information on direction & how short to cut the nails. Can you make any recommendations on how to deal with cracked nails from where they began splitting while I'm cutting. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening? I know I need a muzzle for her in order to properly clip when the nails get a bit long, but it's been something of a nightmare to get DH to pick up one. Can you recommend a makeshift muzzle until I'm able to get one? Tink is a toy fox terrier who is down to about 7.5 to 8lbs (down from over 14lbs). I'm a chronic pain patient with some mobility issues & have been fighting fractures in my legs & feet along with stress fractures in both feet along with spinal damage, left knee destroyed, ulnar nerve damage in right arm mostly though it is worsening in left now. I'm also fighting with my fingers & hands drawing from multiple autoimmune diseases. I don't always have help - most often, I don't have help so it's up to me to keep up her grooming. Any assistance is welcome but know that I don't normally have help.
@PetPrepper5 жыл бұрын
Here is a very old video I made on muzzles. And the cracked nails, make sure you have a very sharp nail clipper for starters and you may need to add protein and some fish oil to the dogs diet. Make sure the fish oil is pet grade not human grade. Good luck with everything and I hope your health improves as well. I am dealing with some of the same and it is not fun I know

wow thank you very much, I always thought I can't clip my dog's black nail, but he has been rejected by all the vets in the area, and none of them can clip his nail. He said the nail had overgrown, and he just cut to where the nail should be, like didn't care my dog was bleeding like crazy. But to me, I was supposed to trust the vet...

the top of the toenail was sticking up in the air until it finally came off the sides where still in tacked . almost like 1/3 was attached on one side, 1/3 on the other side and 1/3 was up in the air. does that make sense? I was also wondering is there a way to strengthen his toenails?

If you cut into the quick, yes it bleeds, but you don't always hit a nerve, so the pet doesn't always react. I have never cut, nor had any students or Veterinarian or Vet Tech cut far enough into a quick that would cause damage to any nerves.

Yeah you’re very wrong. It’s important to cut close to the quick so it can recede. The quick grows with the nail so it needs to recede otherwise it will be a never ending cycle of the quick just growing longer and longer.
