As a one man show I manage 62 lawns in the northeast. Scheduling is the most challenging part of staying on top of my business. We are in a wet pattern now in July and the grow rate is back to spring like conditions. Thick and wet some days, wet for sure every morning. I can’t wait for the ideal mowing conditions to show up, I need to start at 8am and shoot for at least 10 to 16 per day. There are techniques that can help. I don’t spray clippings anywhere that I have to latter clean off, I cut for the best outcome on that day knowing that next week is another shot. Do no damage catch it next time for the better cut. Clumping is the one thing that will send me home for the day, the clumps can kill the grass underneath and dispersing them can chew up too much time, it’s all about the balance between working and waiting.

We just got done having a terental downpour. Is it possible to cut the grass right away. This is my own lawn and the grass is pretty tall. It seems every time I go to cut it. There is always rain.

I'm in Oregon, only a week of rain, ha, it rains most of spring. You gave solid advice I've done it all. But we can't set idle for months. So I have an aluminum grass catcher to put on my mower. It will still clog up but it helps. Turf damage is unavoidable but we learn how to minimize that. Oh yeah I've been wicked stuck too. Carry a come along.

Hey Jason! I'd love to hear your opinion on yards FILLED with dog poop. Is this just something we have to deal with as lawn care people? I have one customer who pays very well, but her backyard is just one dog pile after another. Another that has a tiny town house backyard and sometimes I just have to weedeat it because of how much there is. Also what do you do about backyards that have a small gate with a huge backyard? Maybe you can only fit a 21 inch or 30 inch in the gate and it takes you much longer than normal? Charge more?
@zanearnold13374 жыл бұрын
I'd be upfront about the issue and say either clean up or I'll charge more to clean it for you, or else drop the customer

I mow lawns for a living. Just me, no employees. Concerning the dog mess: i hate, hate, hate driving over or stepping in dog mess. My customers know that they MUST pick it up before i get there. It has taken me a couple years to get to this point. Any new customers i just make sure to make it clear that i will not cut if there is dog mess. I used to cut and then get pissed when it was on my shoes, mower and in my trailer. But i have learned to just skip areas or the entire back yard if there is dog mess. I have also let customers go because they won't pick it up. It took me time to get to the point to realize I don't have to have every customer. A learning experience. Regarding small gates: where i am from in Michigan my minimum price to cut is $30. I have a 4' walk behind. If i have to use my 3' walk behind because the gate is small the price is automatically ATLEAST $35. Might be more, depending on the size of the back yard. Last year i did one for $50 because it was a pretty big back yard. If i can only fit my 21" the price is a minimum $40. Might be more. Just remember you dont have to have every lawn. Give a price and if they don't like it, tough. Also most commercial guys dont have 36" or 21" mowers so if you want those customers that is a selling point. Most companies want to be in and out with their 60" zero turns. If customers dont like the price, let them find someone else. If you are just starting out sometimes you are willing to take a job for cheaper and then bump the price up next year. I bid jobs all the time that I underbid, i suck it up till the next year, raise the price (fairly) and hope they take it. Hope this helps.

PA LAWN GUY> Good video. Which wheel do you power when in the three-point turn? OR which is powered more, when in the turn? I am improving, but have not had my 0-turn long. Thanks.

Love to see you top dress your yard with sand. Been keeping 419,328, and other grass types for 25 years. Sand will make it fill in twice as fast. Great video.

@@bruceburchett Is there any special considerations as to the sand? Could I just buy play box sand at home depot and put it on my yard?

Your good video talks about mowing wet grass from the perspective of the grass. Is there a downside to the mower in terms of rust, dulling the blade, etc?
@meegstomtom4 жыл бұрын
I scrap my deck out after every yard when wet. So that adds time. But never had rust issues when scraped out.

Confused homeowner here. Mowing short helps grass fill in? Mowing high keeps weeds away? I always heard cut high and often for a healthy yard. Or are they both correct?
@lawncarelife4 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the type grass you have. Cool season grasses are probably best kept higher. St Augustine grass also will do better higher. Bermuda, zoysia and centipede are adaptable and can be mowed short

Jason, I know you are a Husqvarna trimmer guy. I recently got the 525L and put speed feed 400 on it and it has caused way more vibration than the stock head.. thoughts? Thanks!

Had a situation ! : Hire this lawn service for the first time and had it setup to mow the following week. So they came in the morning when grass was very wet and think too much about it. But after a couple days I noticed that it left bad stripe marks or marks and clumps of grass all over the lawn. Terrible looking, yard has never been like this. Before I had a deep green tall grass weed free lawn and now terrible looking with tire lines in entire yard from heavy mower wheels ! Looks bad !!!

Jason, do you have much bahia grass in your area? I usually have to hit it twice with my Hustler Raptor with a sharp blade. Will the higher priced commercial mowers cut it the first time or do you have to hit it twice as well?
@Draega0074 жыл бұрын
I have a gravely pro turn 152 and I always have to run over bahia grass twice sometimes 3 times. Even with brand new blades it doesn't make a difference.

Yard didn't need cut, try 6 inch grass soaked. I absolutely hate it and you can't tell people why it looks bad. They want it cleaned up and drives and walks washed no extra pay. I just wait until one day no rain and start from there because still a mess.
