69 Year Old Learns How to Drive a Toro Zero Turn Mower and Exmark Staris

My 69 year old friend learns how to drive a zero turn mower for the first time. Bob agreed to come over to practicing on a zero turn. We tried a sit down mower and well as a stand on mower. Overall, I think Bob did a great job. It takes getting used to driving a mower, especially learning to make smooth turns. Bob will never go back to a push mower now ! 8 ) That stander does take a minute. My first time backing up on my stander one hand slipped off the handle and it did a quick backwards donut and about threw me off ! LOL.

I think Bob did good in a few hours it will be my first time mowing with a zero turn. So I watch this I have used a Yard Machine ridding lawnmower mower so starting with choking should be ok. The safety features will be knew. Yea it seams a little intimidating. I am starting on the Bosses yard so I will try the three part turns so I don’t tear up his lawn.

We showed college students during the summer months how to run zero turns, they helped out while out of school. And a old shopping cart in tje garage is what I used to show them how easy it was to operate.

Congratulations, Bob, on your first zero turn. I recently purchased my first zero turn mower at the age of 75 and have really enjoyed how much fun it is to mow with one of these vs mowing with a standard push mower, especially at my age and artists seems to cause pain in the legs at times. I did buy one of the electric battery versions, so I wouldn't have to deal with oil and gas issues.

Bob is gonna start coming over and asking if you need him to mow your lawn. That kinda hurt when he scooped up that gravel but he did good on the stander.

Since I started collecting Pro Lawn Equipment working 70 weeks in the freight industry preparing my own business - at 56 the most common thing I hear is - You can't do it - your going to fail - you can't Handel it. Yet none of these folk have spent 30 years starting their morning delivering freight all day then loading and unloading trucks till midnight. Nope. They were home with their families eating supper and going to bed. I've spent this whole year going through devastating radiation and chemo fighting cancer and now cancer free. As you get older and you hear people tell you what you can't do it's not cause you can't - is cause they need you to fail. For me, my 7 year old son is far more important than being concerned about malicious emotional desire of others. Thanks for this. Been working for the school as a custodian for 9 years and they are gonna stop hiring a mowing crew and put me on the head of it. I've done a lot of mowing even on riders but never a zero turn. Didn't wanna get out there and look like a jackass. If I can do as good as Bob I'll cut the mustard

Purchased a Toro 42" Zero Turn yesterday. The desk manager asked if I had driven a skid steer, same principle. I'm a year younger than Bob and will turn 70 in December. The mower will be delivered on Monday and it's going to get a good workout with the tall grass. Can't wait to have some fun.

I turn 72 next month. Bought a Ferris ISX2200 last week. I have a lot of trees to trim around and some fairly steep areas that exceed the manufacturer’s recommended max. But I felt pretty good after the first mowing, even making pretty smooth K-turns. I’ve operated a lot of equipment in the past. Cars, trucks, boats, snowmobiles, and even had occasion to operate a rented skid steer and fly a Cessna 172 that a friend owned. And I have a pretty good understand of physics and am a pretty accomplished DIY metal fabricator and mechanic/electrician. So if your background is anything like mine, go for it. And if you want a mower that’s easy on your back, get a Ferris. They are awesome. One tip though. That ROPS bar is going to get hung up in low branches if you don’t pay attention. So wear the seat belt and stay safe. Especially if you have a hilly property.

I was gifted a Great Dane Chariot 48. Took a lot of work and some money to get it back to running , this is my first zero turn . Bob did good but I think he was going to fast at first..lol.. I'm 65, I'm still learning but having fun!

The best analogy I've heard for steering a zero-turn, is the same way you steer a shopping cart. Take it from this 70-year old, if you can steer a shopping cart you can steer a zero-turn. (i.e. move forward with one hand as you hold or ease back with the other)

I'm 69 myself and just got my first zero turn. The controller handles are touchie. Take some getting use to. Going slow for now to get the hang of it. Don't want to run over the wife's rose bushes 😄

If you are a pilot these zero turns are harder to learn. Why? in a plane when you step on the right rudder the plane turns right. On a zero turn it is opposite. My dealer told me to think about how you turn a grocery cart. I still look for the foot brake pedal. 😁

Toro's owners manual says to turn the blades on at full throttle, not half like you are doing

I’m 69 and just got a Toro MyRide 54” ZTR. What’s the deal? My hand to eye coordination is better than most young people. I just cut 1.5 acres and had no problem. I’m tired of younger people thinking we are idiots because we are older. Nope. We are swift learners. That’s how we got this age. Geez. How insulting.

My Toro instructions says rev the engine all the way up before you engage the blades.
