How to De-Dome a Nichia 519A LED in 3 Minutes!

This is a quick video showing you how to de-dome a Nichia 519A LED. It increases the candela but lowers lumen output. Don't do this with other LEDs as it will probably break them.

Hey Darren, it’s Thomas, I changed my username. Nice to see you doing a modification video and this is a great place to start. I like to push a little bit on one “corner” of the dome and work my way around so I don’t have to apply to much pressure to any one point. That will help prevent lifting the glass at all and getting air underneath which will shorten the life of the emitter. Also getting some heat into the dome to soften the adhesive helps as well. I just did this to a convoy s21e that has a 2700k 519a, it came out so nice. It lowers the color temperature as well, I know the higher the starting temp the more it will drop but I don’t think the 2700k lowered by more than 300k-400k but it definitely made it more rosy which I think was the biggest improvement l noticed on the 2700k at least. Great video, I’ll be looking forward to any other modification videos.

Hi Thomas, good to hear from you! Yeah I am not so knowledgeable about mods but can do LED swaps and things like this, tail spring bypass. Learning as I go. The third one I de-domed was a bit stubborn and I was pressing and scratching at the glass for a fair bit to clean it up. Maybe a hair dryer or heat gun might soften the silicon or whatever the dome is made of.

I did find the 3000K one dropped to about 2500K after the de-dome, which I don't mind - I use it as a night light. Take care my friend.

@@DarrenYeoYT I was thinking the same thing about using a heat gun for the lights that the mcpcb/pill had to be taken out of the light. I was able to do the s21e with it still in the light so I just turned the light to 100% a couple of times before trying it. I also did all four emitters in a ts25 today as well, they are 5000k and look like they dropped to 4000k or below. I am definitely liking the ts25 better after dedome, I actually liked the 5000k tint but the extra throw is a big improvement for the ts25 imo.

@@lumntoob999 TS25 is similar to Sofirn IF25a in terms of the 4x TIR lenses. I have the Convoy S21F which has 4 X 519A LEDs but the lens makes a huge flood beam anyway, I don't see a point in de doming the LEDs and losing output.

No beamshots of the before and after? :( Dedoming these 519As significantly reduces the CCT, the dedomed 4500K on my Jaxman E3 is around 3400K now with excellent tint.

I tested my S2+ before and after and got 10m extra throw, tint also reduced from 3000 to 2500!

So not much of a difference in throw but this is with the same OP reflector
