Easy on the 3.1 to skip the smog pump. You don’t really have a choice because you can’t buy a new one. You don’t even have to remove it. Use a different belt and reroute. You can’t buy a charcoal canister. Therefore unplug fuel vapor line from charcoal canister, remove purge valve, and put an air filter on the end. Cat…… well you can leave it, but just knock the guts out of it. Make sure when messing with charcoal canister you unplug the vacuum line and plug the end of it off. Non of the changes will give you a service engine light.

Anyway, that you could send pictures on how to do the canister set up. I haven’t found anything online that specifically explained it. I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Those metal AIR tubes that connect to the exhaust manifolds are a pain in the azz to get out, but they can be removed using a flare nut wrench and the holes capped with 5/16 inverted flare nut plugs. I did this on my 84 Firebird just to make the engine look a little nicer and easier to work on
@thedoubtfultechnician80672 жыл бұрын
How do you access the fasteners that hold it in? From above or below?
@StevenBlack20132 жыл бұрын
@@thedoubtfultechnician8067 from above. The driver side is pretty easy to get to but the passenger side is way more hard to access the closer you get to the firewall. On my vehicle I removed the AC stuff for access since I wasn't using it anyway. You might be able to use a flex head flare wrench. There are 4 flare nuts per manifold

Just rewatched and performed the same procedure on my 1985 Trans Am with TPI. A couple of differences between the 85 model and yours (not too sure if my situation is the same as earlier cars, or when the procedure becomes the same as Dt's), My car has 4 belts instead of 1, the egr pump is run off of a single belt, so this means less modifications. The half in iron hose caps still work, however, the egr pump is held onto the engine through 2 brackets with 13mm bolts instead of T40s. The charcoal canister is a separate unit held in by I think 1 10mm bolt, the pump wheel for the belt is still held in by 3 bolts, but not 10mm, I think SAE of some variety, very close but not quite. And lastly, it has extra metal pipes for the air system that run around the back of the engine. These don't need to be capped just like DT's example, but I just performed the work and time will tell if it becomes an issue, or if it's just a little benign clutter. Just thought I'd share what I found!
@karlschuler24747 ай бұрын
Sorry, the EGR wheel is run off of a belt that ONLY connects to it and the crank, that's what I meant by single belt.

Technically, removing the catalytic converter reduces the carbon footprint of the vehicle because more CO comes out of the tailpipe than CO2. But it also means more hydrocarbons come out which are also greenhouse gasses but much less long lived in the atmosphere. The catalytic converter was really there to decrease the impact on smog and haze. Given how few of these cars are still on the road and how they are used now, removing it will have a negligible impact on any kind of air quality.
@wtf0101 Жыл бұрын
Funny shit, air pump was used to heat the O2 sensor on start up and the catalyst in the converter,the emissions only worked at above idle a till 80% throttle, above 80% throttle only restricted part was the converter,if you adjusted the TPS you could pickup some throttle response, I miss those days

@thedoubtfultechnician8067 Жыл бұрын
Glad you got it started. Hopefully whatever you bumped is secure now, would suck if it came loose on a pothole and left you stranded. I have ONE valve going to the pipe to the catalytic and ONE that goes to both manifolds. It sounds like your manifolds are fed by TWO separate valves? That would make a total of three but I’ve never worked on another trans am to know for sure.
