How to de-yellow your G.I. Joe U.S.S. Flagg!!

Just a few thoughts from someone who has tinkered with this for years. I use a clear container with a lid. Put the peroxide in the bottom of the container and have the pieces not touch the peroxide and seal it. Put it in the sun all day. That said, even if your parts come out perfectly white. They will be prone to yellowing again. Not as bad as before, but it won’t stay the perfect white you get from the process. I have to admit, the painting idea I’ve never used, but it is tempting. Have fun and good luck not ruining anything too expensive!

Ah yes I’ve heard the clear container is better… I use this one because it was free. I’ve heard the yellowing comes back. I think mine has slightly yellowed again but still looks better overall

Most people do paint them. I’ve always been afraid to do that because I feel like the paint would rub off onto the deck plates. I’m not a fan of repainting toys in general because I’m always worried the paint is going to transfer to other toys. But hey whatever works 👌🏻😁 Thanks for watching!!

I have heard that water is a component of these types of plastics during the production. The reason they become brittle is because they actually dry out over time based on the conditions in which they are kept. The submersion in water, supposedly somewhat adds this moisture component back to to the plastic. Not sure how the peroxide affects the plastic long term. Do you think using a clear tote would garner a better result than something dark or opaque? It should allow the sunlight to penetrate at all angles instead of just from above for a more consistent result.

Oh the water doesn’t really do anything As far as de-yellowing.... A lot of people use corn syrup and peroxide and paint the solution on instead of submersing it and water with peroxide. They get the exact same results using the other method. A clear tote is definitely preferred. That way sunlight can penetrate it from all angles. In this scenario though all of the yellowing was on the top of the Flaggs roof and I didn’t want to buy a clear tote specifically for this project. I already had the black one which came with my Flagg. I totally only have a high school diploma so I don’t know crap but I think there isn’t really any water component in plastic because of the whole “oil doesn’t mix with water” thing... plastic does come from petroleum. Just making wild assumptions though lol

i would not bother, i have been using retrobright for some years now and the yellow comes back maybe in 1 year or 2 years, the process can be dangerous in the long run and make the plastic less solid and hard, and for collections that might be terrible.

Oh yes I partially agree with you. I wouldn’t risk doing this normally but the top of the superstructure was so freaking yellow that I felt like I needed to replace it anyway. Since I planned on buying a new roof anyway there was really no harm in attempting it. I would only advise people attempt this if the superstructure is severely yellowed. As far as the yellow returning; I’ve seen a lot of people make that remark so I’m sure there is some truth to it. but I keep my Flagg in a pitch black dark 72°F room. I’ll probably post an update video on the one-year anniversary of this video to see if the yellowing has returned.

The majority of the superstructure was yellowed but I found it to be acceptable.. like you said a warship... I only treat of the roof because it was very very bad. It was almost brown. I didn’t correct the color on the bottom half and left it slightly yellowed. It looked totally fine
