I was in a small venue with a comedian who was heckled by a drunk. The comedian made fun of the heckler. The heckler got up and stormed out of the room. But he was so drunk he missed the door and knocked himself down hitting the wall. It was so funny. The comedian shook his head and said I don’t know how to beat that.

I was heckled by a comedian before... I had worked 24 hours straight and had plans w/ friends to meet at the Comedy Club, I was exhausted and when the lights when down I fell asleep within 10 mins of the show starting, in my chair in the front directly in front of the Comedian on stage, I was sleeping upright baby bird style, mouth open and the comedian made the entire rest of his time heckling me. The other people in the audience thought it was all part of the show and evidently the comedian roasted me good (I was told everything the next day). I slept thru the whole show. I laughed when they told me- Glad the comedian got a lot of good material off of me. This was in 2002. Still think it's funny

I thought a heckler was someone that insults the comedian but a lot of these comedians are calling people hecklers for nothing? It's not even close to a comparison when someone is just standing up, giving a compliment, raising their glass, etc. How can you call someone a heckler when they didn't even speak to you?

Active heckling is when an audience member interrupts and starts talking directly to you in the middle of your presentation. Yes, most of the time it is rude or vulgar comments, but you have to remember, comedy is timing so when anyone, even a polite person who is giving you a compliment says something, it can throw off your timing, interrupt a joke, distract you from a long build up or any number of things that can ruin a part of the show. It's usually not a good idea to interrupt unless they ask for audience participation.

Ohhhh but Hecklers are THE BEST! Audiences love it, like a Bloodsport :-) Lets face it, what Audience doesnt waant to see some drunken bitter loudmouthed schnook get a serve and as an audience participation activity it ranks right up there :-)
