I generally agree with this and have always operated this way, however, it’s always ended up with me being overloaded with work and responsibilities well beyond my pay grade and an implied deference from everyone else. I become the indispensable go to person for EVERYTHING and it all falls apart whenever I’m not around. This never translates into higher pay for me though because why would a company pay me more when I already do so much for them at a discount. I take pride in everything that I do and I refuse to do anything half way. This has made it difficult for me to be just a drone for anyone else.

I work at a big box Department hardware store, and we often hire teenagers or adults who seem apathetic or don't care. They're just there to collect a paycheck or doing this as a job until something better comes along. Sometimes it's their second job and they really don't care if they lose it. How do you motivate them? And firing them really isn't that easy, my company has so many hoops to jump through to get rid of someone. Every time I take ownership of a task. They seemingly disappeared from the Department, and go chit chat with somebody. I'm not talking about a single person either, multiple people, over multiple years. Also how do I keep good workers; who get better offers from other companies when I'm not authorized to pay them more?

Really trying to work on these principles...it's been hard trying to check the ego cuz you wanna do the opposite. Put the negative on others and take the positive for yourself. But that's not the way...I gotta keep getting after it.
@mikevilla35862 жыл бұрын
But what if you are dealing with a person who simply won't learn to take ownership? and then the dynamic between you just becomes you taking all responsibility while they simply wont care whether they did things right or not... I know Jocko said that then you just fire the person... but here's the gist: you're not that person's boss... and you don't have a direct line of communication with the person that is (nor you can have it)... I like this philosophy of extrene ownership, I use it myself, but the problem is people that won't align with it because they just don't have that level of commitment( reponsibility)...

Woooo! This is new and feels unaturally difficult. I have a subordinate that has complained and outright said they aren't doing one simple task that the entire team is onboard doing. Aside from this they have already displayed the inability/want to be a team player. The kind of person you give an inch they take a mile. I feel like if I keep doing their tasks they are going to feel like they can do whatever they want and maybe that's the best outcome. As I write this I'm kind of starting to grasp this philosophy, I think. 1 of 2 things is going to happen. 1: My picking up of their tasks will embolden them to behave in the workplace however they want causing bigger rifts between teammates and personnel essentially making this difficult person a major outcast in our environemnt making it a place unbearable to work in and they'll eventually quit from the reflection of themselves through the mirror of that environment or 2. Because they notice a change in teammates towards them by their behavior and lack of ability to do simple tasks they will feel the need to prove their competence in the environment to garner some kind of respect back from their teammates. Love it. I'm just there to facilitate success and taking extreme ownership building toward the goal of success.

When its a positive thing, when you can give someone ownership of a moving forward situation, give it, share it. When its a negative thing, when a moving backward situation is occurring and you have the chance to give that to someone (possibly a person who is moving backward), take it, own that, that is leadership. I rewound the last 30 seconds of the vid like 10 times to hear that again and again until I 100% understood what he was saying. This is genius level stuff, people. Thank you Jocko and Echo, this is amazing content. Knife twirling and combat knife-wielding included ;-)

The problem I'm having is the person's deoptimization is not being realized or addressed by management. I'd like to think I'm taking and doing as much as I can, working beyond my pay grade and keeping my mouth shut if I have nothing nice to say. But it feels like I'm the only one noticing the short comings and resistance. So I see my part, which is I want to be doing their job. So I've drafted a polite and professional appeal to ask for more and different responsibility and that I'd like more time doing the other person's position (obviously not saying it like that)

Jocko, in my life, the person who is resistant and unwilling to change and unwilling to take responsibility is my own mother. I have to live with my own mother for the next 2 to 3 years and I cannot get rid of her. In situations where you cannot get rid of the person, and the person continues to be resistant to change, what is the optimal and best strategy to deal with these people effectively so you can still achieve the family’s mission and goals?
@Jonbombs2 жыл бұрын

@hellnah3195 жыл бұрын
@Jocko This is interesting and definitely useful to learn. However, in the perspective where you are NOT the leader, and your leaders are typically bad at taking ownership... How does this same method translate. When you are always taking ownership of the problems but the leaders never seem to stop manufacturing new ones. I guess I'm partly asking if leadership should be assumed in every position, just with a separate tactic. @Jocko
@J_The_Colossal_Squid5 жыл бұрын
I think I would agree that the tactic described is great in organizations with aligned goals, and especially in urgent or emergent scenarios, but it seems like there may also be instances when a leader would be hard pressed to take on more projects that are less of a priority, but still need to be done well, combined with at least short term situations where team members/leaders need behavioral guidance. The way i learned to take ownership of problems like that, is to maintain focus on the conduct that is being called into question, while going on a fact finding mission first, because the cause or causes of the constraint needs to be revealed. It may not even end being the person accused, or the person doing the accusing, or even anything intentionally hatched.
