“Our inward power, when it obeys nature, reacts to events by accommodating itself to what it faces-to what is possible. It needs no specific material. It pursues its own aims as circumstances allow; it turns obstacles into fuel. As a fire overwhelms what would have quenched a lamp. What’s thrown on top of the conflagration is absorbed, consumed by it-and makes it burn still higher.” Marcus Aurelius

To add to this..... TALENT doesn't alway show up when you need it either. If you rely on your talent to get you through intense situations one day it may not be available to you... In those times, it's the hard work, skill, and ---- discipline. All developed consistently as a habit, that will guide you through.

I had my first day of internship this month and the last one was absolutely terrible so i had quite some issues falling asleep for the first two days. Initially it kicked my butt and i felt bad because i thought that i would start to forget the stuff that i prepared. After the seconf day i was laying in my bed thinking cynically "good. I might forget some stuff that i prepared? Good, i get the opportunity to improvise." Been going great since then.

When you turn the false motivation dial to 11, it becomes forced motivation, which is when you're so falsely motivated that you become hyper motivated just to spite your false motivation.

Jocko, I feel like you were not giving Echo his due and you had your ego get the better of you in this video. When Echo talked about the difference in definition between motivation and inspiration, he was actually making a good point in my opinion. You see, while you are doing what you do out in the world, you are actually inspiring people, with inspiring leadership. Inspiring to be self-disciplined. Inspiring to take extreme ownership. Inspiring to help others. The fact that I sometimes have to get over my unmotivated self by being inspired by all of the above, is my empirical evidence. I hope you'll read this and I can help you improve yourself with this KZbin comment, the way you are helping so many others in so many different ways.

Had a similar experience in boot camp at PI back in '74.....DI was 'motivating' us by PT for some infraction I can't remember. (of course...in the first half you can't do anything right while they break you of all of your scuzzy civilian ways) Everyone was crying but I was smiling and enjoying the whole deal. DI gets really angry...stops us and wants to know what the hell I'm smiling about? 'The private loves being motivated Sir!!' The more he tried to make us miserable the more I enjoyed it....really messed with his mind, which of course is what he was trying to do to us. Good times...:)

I don't believe discipline gets you going or discipline gets you through things like Jocko stated. Motivation is the basis of any action we do. You eat because you're hungry. The negative feeling of being hungry makes you seek food. You're motivated. Same with hot or cold, shelter or water. There is a contributing factor.

False motivation for me isn't looking at a bad situation and saying, "Yeah let's do this!" For me it is a situation when the boss try's to buy your loyalty for a tiny portion of the value of your sacrifice, from your point of view. I.E. the boss won't explain the mission to you or why it is important, typically because they dont know, but they still expect you to hit it hard and get it done. So instead of explaining the mission or objective or the why the boss offers you a t-shirt, or a pizza and for you personally your sacrifice of time away from your family is more valuable to you than the pizza or t-shirt. The first couple of times people typically think, "it's ok I can take the hit this time, and hey pizza!" After the 3rd or 4th time they dont understand why offering a pizza in place of real leadership isn't working.

I think the bottom line for me is this dichotomy ...." being" V/S "doing" including doing internally, not being able to be is the problem sinqua non , it IS our eternal problem, isn't it ? For me this means exploring, experimenting, playing around with, testing then slowly a sense of knowing this will be good for me ...v/S lets get some umm... You get some and leave me to be , but yes i see what you mean well-intentioned Jocko . Jocko are you saying you enjoy being deluded or self-deceptive "regular motivation cr...p", oh I just destroyed someone crack , crack ....oh well so what , then years later who did you say you were bam ( one dead man) . That is closer to the truth isn't it ! Who would intentionally want to hurt another person Jocko come on , I remember that one play fighting they all jumped on me wow enjoyed it fantastically. I love it you said "you wake up dead" , I love it ! It is a strange world this inner Universe of Jocko , a strange slightly exhilarating and scary at the same time like don't press me or else , false motivation and false response and EQUALS we are totally..up and confused but can't admit it , male pride, macho cr...p, isn't it ? You tell me ., my old man was a beautiful example no matter how many times he got a good beating up , still he was insulting and eventually it became a trademark, kinda weird uhh, toughened up yep but what a price to pay for all this stuff , until much older i was the only one who could call him on this testosterone-fuelled madness, a scared boy on some level spending his whole life trying to be the M...a...n ! Scared of admitting to feelings he could never acknowledge, scared of saying he f...up , scared or listening and taking on board the effect he had on others especially my poor Mother, who believed through it all he would change, he'd stop womanizing, drinking , , self-inflating and actually enter into a relationship with her , no wonder she wamed down the iron on the ironing board and one night after a late night out had him in the kitchen on the floor by his tye, trying to throttle him no wonder heh, big proud macho man,he would have loved you're podcasts , and put you on this pedestal, a man ---that's a man son he would have said !

Jocko, my ex dumped me a month ago mostly because of my anger issues. I decided to start working out again and I deal with the breakup fairly well. I also decided to tackle my anger issues. But sometimes, I just feel so guilty about the things that happened and I get angry about myself, which is counterproductive of what I'm trying to achieve. How would you deal with this?
@Renault07
@Renault07 4 жыл бұрын
If you're taking productive steps to deal with your defects (like anger issues), then keep doing that. Ask forgiveness where it's needed, if prudent. Forgive yourself, Cuz you won't ever be perfect, so stay humble. You'll always be correcting defects in yourself Practice the virtues opposite to your vices. Learn to be meek, humble, patient, etc

Anger... It starts with understanding a couple basic things... 1. Anger is a self defense mechanism... It's ALL self preservation, so when you get pissed off, it's because some function of YOU is being threatened. 2. Anger (like a lot of the world) is neither particularly good or evil. It simply is. It's normal. It's natural. AND it's okay to feel that way. Issues with anger USUALLY (admittedly, not always) stem from being angry at one's self. You are angry at you for threatening some function of YOURSELF... It's no guarantee, but it's where the smart money goes if I'm betting. SO... what did you do to yourself. You know where you f***ed up if you think about it. You know how that tore you down... made you worse for everything you were doing. SO face it like digging yourself into a BIG deep hole. Just focus on putting the damn shovel down... You can figure out what needs to be done or avoided so you don't F*** yourself up anymore... at least, not on this issue. NOW...This will likely sound a bit "nutty". Do it anyway. Go find a mirror. (Most of us have one on a medicine cabinet in the bathroom... or on a wall)... Apologize for whatever you did to yourself to F*** you up. Be sincere. AND forgive yourself. You're human. You F***ed up... I've f***ed myself up, and probably every other person out there and around this comment section has, too. It happens. I'm not going to delude you into thinking it's okay. You should do your best to STOP f***ing yourself up. ...SO... Find it in your heart to forgive yourself for the shortcomings of being a human... AND then make a promise, that tomorrow, you're going to try SINCERELY to do better. You might be well advised to go back up there, and write all this crap down. Maybe you can get by with a copy-paste into a Text-file... stick it somewhere on your desktop if you're on a laptop, or anywhere convenient otherwise... That lets you review it from time to time. Finally, it's alright to embrace the angry you... the darker self you generally don't parade around. It's as naturally a part of you as your hand, so trying to gouge it out is like trying to carve off your own limbs. It's a terrible crime on yourself. I can become (at the drop of a hat btw) an absolute HORROR of an excuse for human being when I get pissed off. I've found a few little rituals that demonstrate my exasperation before I leave the conversation, "To get some air"... People who know me, know how dangerous it can be when I "go quiet" and walk out. I can then retain control and come back a few minutes later to better explain what has "gotten on my last nerve" and reaffirm a boundary that's been crossed or abused. Usually, it's enough to get the point across, and there are no more issues... AND for those "overtly aggressive types" who don't understand... well... sometimes life here on Planet Earth is reckless, aggressive, and violent. It's in those times that anger truly has it's best useful functions... ...from the first swing, my philosophy is simple, "Come home with my shield or upon it." ;o)
@magma9999

@@gnarthdarkanen7464 I know what triggers my stress/anxiety that leads to anger. It happens mostly when I'm at work, I just feel like I'm not enough, that I'm not fast enough, that my boss will tell me that he's not satisfied with me. Sadly, I feel the same way about one of my parents. I grew up with a hothead father that would smash things in the house and a mother that was busy with work and boyfriends. I know I can't blame others for my mistakes and I have to focus on becoming a better person. I don't want to recreate the same patterns. I'm just mad at myself for not getting my shit together sooner and destroying the opportunity to be with someone I love.

Weareallbeingwatched hmm, having worked in a business setting for a while, I think profit and product are accurate, but broad terms in business. Product could also include customer service. Profit doesn’t have to be just monetary. There’s the triple bottom line: money, community, and ethics. If your business delivers on all of those points, your business is GETTING AFTER IT.
@weareallbeingwatched4602
@weareallbeingwatched4602 4 жыл бұрын
@@TXP9 I would even argue that what's wrong with the American school of management consulting is that it's militarized - Booz Allen Hamilton binding together a disparate set of civil industries for a "total war" environment. Business is about agreement and trust, not domination and control. The objective of trade is generating value efficiently for the customer and the supplier by employing creativity and acumen - this involves a certain degree of skepticism about monolithic objectives - you have to question the value and validity of preconceptions to create success. Business is *not* war. It isn't predatory.

All answers lead to the top, to make them more money. Period, full stop. Obey, carry out, or else. Jocko is a cia operator, no one else is more equipped. Smart, strong, persuasive. Gain his wisdom, do not conform.

how about you don't put the motivation in Goals but to have a motivation to do stuff professionally, to be a professional. That's a lasting motivation. Expect from yourself to handle things like a pro.

There is no difference between the two. It is about perspective. One man can fake being a leader, but if he inspires, is he really a fraud? Clearly not.

Please do a podcast about steroid use in military being as transparent as possible in detail. I’m sick and tired of watching all these obnoxious fakenatties on youtube spew BS to their viewers (not you). Lets get the truth out and be more transparent. People respect Greg Doucette as a professional bodybuilder because he admits to using steroids!
