Yo Kevin..I quit sparring at 55 ( Krav Maga, Judo and Boxing, 62 now) But still work the bags. When using the round-ball, I 'll get it moving around fast , then stick my face right in its path and "slip" before it can hit me. Being strong helps..I only clock in at 135 but got a 275 bench and 325 squat. Last month a guy with about 70 lbs on me took 2 sucker shots at me-The first I slapped aside, the 2nd I caught open handed and kicked him in the jewels so hard you heard the smack. Fight over. Thank God I still got it!!

Hi Alonzo. Being around the same age group as you, what's your recommendation for old folks, way past their physical prime, who are interested in simply the fundamentals of effective, basic self-defense. I remember looking at the 1927 defense combative, "Defendu", invented by William Fairbairn. Something like that would be ideal as it took mere months to master, not years. But as far as I know, while Defendu exists today as the core art of many militaries' hand-to-hand combatives, it itself is no longer taught around the world.

Biggest key of information here is when he talked about covering the occipital region of the head/back of the neck. What he says is 100% true. At the least, if you take a shot there you will be dizzy and to defend yourself after that will be very challenging. I love the realism in your instruction because during times like these the reality is that you will get hit. So your instruction of making that a reality and to protect from vital blows is great.

4:34 that arm over arm is actually a great defense against straight on, up the middle kicks. It'll leave ur forearms bruised but the pain is surprisingly minimal.
@padaudio6969

Nah it‘s horrible! Never go with 2 arms to one arm. One in one out - this is one of the most basic rules of VT. And even worse: crossing arms. You‘ll be instantly trapped and knocked out if sb can fight and knows some basic VT technique. Realtime is much too fast for this fancy looking bong tan. Unfortunately doesnt work if the other one knows how to move

Respekt

Dude, here in NYC a cab jumps the corner it doesn't matter if you're blindfolded, you cannot react fast enough. It's all luck. Same with a sucker punch. The whole idea is to hit someone who isn't going to see it coming.
@45gloak

I totally agree, you are usually hit by the sucker punch when you are looking away. The average person cannot defend against it. Going to have to take the punch and react after.

In public, i was suckered twice, but the sucker punch failed both times. Both attackers were downed by a right shuto to the left side of their necks. My trained reflexes saved me from harm, my reflexive fighting came from gojuryu budo. PS I was in my 50s, the two men were 30 or under in age.

7:45 "So you pull..." WHOA!... wait... stop. If with your left hand you're holding him just above the elbow, and after sliding your right hand down the arm towards the wrist, why would you give up such an advantageous position to throw a punch? In that moment, it's like hitting the lottery and saying, keep the money, I don't want it.Why would you do that? From that position continue sliding the right hand all the way down to your opponents clenched fist then cup it and turn outward like you would opening a door knob. That will cause his head and upper body to start leaning forward and downward. With your left hand that's just above his elbow, start applying pressure as if you want to break the arm at the joint and ride the slide. You can ride him face first all the way into the ground then slightly adjust the contact with the right hand so that you immediately apply a wrist lock while carefully maintaining the physical contact the whole time and the fight pretty much ends right there. If you want or need to, you can apply more pressure to the wrist lock while bending his hand backwards and tear some ligiments, or you can dislocate/break him at the elbow with more pressure and or a forceful downward hit at the elbow.

Situational awareness is highly important. Knowing the layout of the battlefield brings one closer to victory. The goal is not the fight but the escape to safety. If one has no escape then the enemy must be neutralized. How that happens is what self defense is all about. This may include the legal use of a gun. Just saying...lol.

To be such a young knowledgeable sensi is rare because me being a early member of the b.d.f.s.,of the 70's (the original) I am a registered warlord, it's just good to see that make it plain and simple with out everybody getting all stressed out and forgetting the most important things. I seen guys jumping up and down saying "I got island after the first punch they race to the ground screaming "I don't got it" outstanding simply outstanding.

Sounds good, except the head movement alone to defend from people who dight dirty. For a punch it would work, but not for a dirty strike. Those additonal arm blocks made it reasonable for defense.

I'm partially deaf. I would rather keep my eyes looking all directions and keep my head on a swivel, and try to pay attention to see how close others are. So I can judge the distance of people. If I don't know the people, I would distance myself 3 feet. If I know the place and the people there 2 feet. Always judge distance and look all directions. Don't play on your phone,don't look in your wallet,dont look into your purse. You should have your keys out and put your finger on it ready to jabb into the threads

This cross hands followed by a lap sau will just not happen 99% of the time in an open strike. In fights everything is happening fast. You simply will not have time to cross that hand then have the time to lap then proceed with a punch and expecting the opponent not to be countering or throwing a flurry of punches. Trapping hardly ever happens at the initial strike with a fast punch coming towards you. Effective trapping is effectively used when you are already in a grappling position and both have a hold of each other.
