I've never seen this type of fly before, but then, I've never been to England, either. I've also never cared to live in rural areas. I used to have a cat who ate flies. Grabbed them right out of the air and popped them into her mouth.

I was renting a 3 room place in a 250 year old farm house. 6 months out of the year I was vacuuming these things out of the air! Hundreds every day! My landlord said it was because I slept with my window opened (about 4”) so he wouldn’t even come and look at them. I wish I knew about these back then. I was literally underneath the attic of this place, and that’s where they came from!

Now you have dead flies in the attic. How do you keep them out in the first place so you don't have that mess?

I just wish it was that easy! Unfortunately, in our experience it's not. We have a major cluster fly infestation in our loft space and are really struggling to get rid of them permanently. I've two large bug zappers hanging from the beams and have to empty them about every other day because they're full. I've had pst control around and they've released a 'smoke bomb' but while it kills those flying around it's not long before they're back and buzzing around. Apparently they release pheromones which simply attracts more flies ........and they come back in increasing numbers every year! Sadly no one can give me any assurances (or guarantees) that they can fix the problem permanently. Pete - do you have a solution that works over the long term?
@221b-Maker-Street8 ай бұрын
Can you get a slow-release smoke bomb kind of thing - does a product like that exist? It seems you need some kind of extended release action to break the cycle of pheromone release and re-infestation. Meanwhile, you have my sympathies. Flies are one of the most horrible things - I can cope with wasps, bees, spiders. But flies... 🤢

Went down to my basement & for the 1st time in 26 years I found little dead flies everywhere on the floor. Crazy. I never used to see any flies of any kind down there. Swept them up, but who knows how many more will be coming!

I like to take my Henry hoover up the loft beginning of every October and suck them all up, takes about an hour of your time, no cost or chemicals needed🤷♂️ it's a good time to have a general hoover round up there and check about for other pests or even leaks before winter.

My first encounter with cluster flies was 2 years ago shortly after my folks moved into their rural UK location. The main spare loft bedroom where I was sleeping one day became infested with about 20 of these. Being something of a Buddhist ☸️ I was reluctant at first to kill. The old saying 'he wouldn't hurt a fly' may have been in the back of my mind... however the harsh reality was that I had no choice and needed to act quickly before we all went to bed. The field behind my folks was strewn with cow dung so the potential for disease spreading was high. Luckily my folks have an insectecutor fly 🪰 swat which was ideal albeit rather time consuming. I spent at least half hour chasing them and cornering them. Egg fried flies anyone? But seriously - it was an utterly vile experience and the smell of charred flies is something I'd rather not repeat. I also rather regretted the fact that the last few flies were badly maimed and burnt.. clearly they suffered considerably before dying in agony. To be fair most of them DID die quite quickly but.... Suffice to say this is a far more practical, quicker, cleaner and humane solution if a similar situation were to arise again. Very useful to know 👍
