This is why I always say coaches ruin careers too. Media never talk about it. Young guys make it to the pros and listen to everything the coach/coaches say and none of it works for them and/or the information is just wrong. Now 3 years in the player is labeled a bust and their confidence is shot.

I had a 20 year old High School JV coach the past 2 seasons that was terrible he had no idea what he was doing. He would do these things: 1. Whenever something bad happens he stomps around the dugout swearing at the top of his lungs. 2. Wear slides in the dugout because he has feet problems and when he wanted to argue something he would run on the field with his normal shoes partially on. 3. He is so terrible at arguing it just wastes time and no problems are solved. 4. He yells at the worst player on the team whenever he drops a ball. 5. He shares memories of him playing baseball in the umpire meeting and it delays the game. 6. He benched me when I couldn’t see a pop fly that was 50 feet over my head when the sky was white. 7. He posts weird pictures of him hanging out with his girlfriend who is 2 years younger than him on Snapchat. 8. He runs the team Instagram page and only posts alumni pictures of his friends playing baseball. Games are so much better when he isn’t there because he is a seating host for the Mariners. This long list shows how bad of a coach he is.

My 14 year old son stands pretty straight up in his stance, the coaches would yell "bend your knees" while he's up at bat, by the time they say "bend your knees" the 2nd time, he's already hit a single. The coaches left his stance alone as the season went on because he was hitting consistently and his on base percentage is very good. We've had very good experiences with coaches and if you are experiencing success the way you do things and they see you giving effort they usually don't try to fix things that are working

Great Video, love the advice, I see this happen all the time, we are opting for option #4, give the coach Matt Antonelli's cell number tell Matt to expect a call. Actually I have used option #5 with a hitting coach that was teaching my son some bad habits. Guy played in the Big leagues in the 80s' so there was no video of him swinging, but option #5 ask the coach who his favorite MLB hitter is, or who he thinks you should emulate, find videos of him talking about hitting and doing the opposite of what the coach says and he might change his whole theory on hitting! We had a minor league AA guy doing hitting lesson one time for my son and he didn't want his bat knob pointing at the catcher when he was loaded, first I said don't most big leaguers do that in a nice way and then showed him videos and found a video on youtube of the instructor doing that in his actual game swing hitting a home run. From then on it was never an issue.

Great video, as always! I love the Forrest Gump southern baseball coach accent! This is certainly a situation that seems common across levels of baseball. I would love your perspective on how to deal with dumb conduct by coaches , specifically in the youth baseball world. As the owner/director of a travel baseball organization that includes youth teams (10-13u) and beyond how do you handle situations in which parents disagree with the conduct of the coach of their child’s team? Hypothetical: parent of a 13u player let’s you know that coach calls player a “coward”, tells them to get their ass up after being spiked in forearm, tells player to shut his mouth, and when pitcher struggles on mound says to catcher, “don’t look at me, he (pitcher) sucks”. Coach states that he is “old school” and that he is preparing players for high school and beyond. I know this is a bit off topic but interested on your perspective on this and what steps you would take or suggest that players and or parents take in a similar situation. Thanks

I got fired from coaching a 12u travel team, after coaching for almost 20 years, because the high school head coach's kids were on the team, and he preached "hitting down on the ball". I was so sick of watching these fairly athletic kids ground out, I finally had it. We had a practice where I stressed hitting the middle of the ball and trying to elevate it, like my son did, who led the team in HRs and BA. It was like a movie. The kids, even little kids who never hit home runs in their life, hit about 30 HRs in about 20 minutes. I got told the next day that I wasn't there to teach the kids, just to kind of manage the games. I left practice and quit. I tried to use physics and common sense that hitting a ball into the ground is not how to be successful in baseball, only in rare occasions like hit and run and guy on third less than two outs in a close game. I had 9 sets of parents arguing with me, because they didn't want to get on the bad side of the high school coach. It was by far my worst experience in baseball. Just wait till you have kids of your own that you can't coach and they have a bad coach. As much as you know about baseball, you might just go insane.

I truly believe anyone has the potential to be a good coach. You may not have all the knowledge, but good organization skills of how practices should be run. Then you can coach the kids what you know and have assistant coaches back you up on whatever you’re missing to help guide you along the way. A good coach never makes a player feel like they’re terrible. A good coach knows when to get tough but also when to be soft and values all perspectives of each of his or her players.

Most of the time you’re going to be limited by school district lines when it comes to high schools. If you can’t agree with the coach you may need to take it higher to either the head coach or the AD. If you’re a kid sometimes your parents can help, especially if they know the people involved.

My 12u first base coach told me to stand at the front of the batters box and not “kill” the ball “hit” the ball which can be true but that just causes grounders and weak hits

I know you've done videos on equiptment that players receive. My question is on college players where the college is sponsored by a company. How about the players gloves? Do players receive gloves, even if it is the same sponsor of the college? I noticed today in the College World Series a team was sponsored by X brand and the catcher had Y brand on....

Usually you get a glove, but I believe you can use a different one if you want.

Be careful with blanket statements. To some parents and kids any coach who tries to teach something different than what they have always heard is the dumb coach. This is encouragement to those types not to ever buy in

My little league coach made me hold the runners on at 3rd base. My dad told me not to do that. Once after practice, coach asked me why I wasn’t holding on the runners in front of the whole team... So I told him. He tore into 13 year old me in front of the team and nearly put me in tears. The only thing I regret is not quitting on the spot, little league is for teaching youngsters how the game is played, and that is NOT how it’s played.

Yeah I had a coach that would make us condition hard after every practice, every mistake we made throughout that practice was an extra lap, every lap we didn’t make in a certain time was an extra lap, a ball went in between my legs once and he came over yelled in my face that he hated people like me this was when I was in 6th grade

Matt--- one idea for a video you might consider is what do teams / organizations tell the players about gambling on baseball games, how do they go about warning you not to do it? I'm thinking of the Black Sox scandal & Pete Rose mess and the fallout from them. The teams must warn you guys about severe consequences of betting on games, correct?

Need some advice. I play on babe Ruth senior league and I'm 14. Im easily the best outfielder on the team, and one of the for sure top 5 hitters maybe even best (I'm a contact hitter) and because the coach has always coached the same group he keeps them together and always starts them. I'm lucky if I play 2 innings a game and I bat 11th (we bat everyone it's not a great league) how do I get out of this anyone?

We deal with the same thing, my son is by far the best catcher on the team, he rarely lets a ball by him but 2 other catchers let at least 9 balls go to the backstop each per game, they hardly play my son because all the kids go to the same public school and my son goes to a private school.
