Awesome video. Shows exactly what happens when pulling smooth bore. I remember first load I did, I thought someone had rear ended my truck. Scared the crap out of me. You def can’t drive tankers like a super trucker. You gotta be paying attention at all times. That’s why these tankers pay the big bucks.

Looks like the tank has no baffles but baffles don't stop the side motion. Great lesson though less wear and tear on the tractor just takes patience...🙂

I drive Milk Tanker Arctics in UK. Part loads are worse than fully loaded. Good fun driving the Tankers, might look slow to car drivers, but it’s a good ride in the cab.

If you want to get maybe 10% of an idea of what this is like, grab the biggest clear water tight bottle you can find. A 2L coke bottle will probably work. Put it in your car on the passenger seat and try to drive while keeping the water from sloshing. Bonus points if you do this in a manual car. The bigger the bottle the more accurate it will be. But you get the idea. Its a pretty hard thing to do and this guy is doing it like 1000x bigger. Very impressive!

Just lied i have 2 years tanker experience to get a tanker power only contract. Did flatbed/stepdeck before, so im kinda used with shifting loads, coils, steel bars and stuff, but daaaamn, first 10 minutes with the full tanker was stressful. Never drove so careful. So far (3h into driving) im kinda figuring it out. Even had a traffic stop moment and i handled it well, load was under control completely. Came here for advice on starting to roll. Everytime i start moving, i feel like my 5th wheel will break, but i guess its normal. Lower rpm and not skipping gears should help. And just taking it slow. Im just used to flooring it every time i start rolling

my company had a short straight truck tanker with one of those medium duty automatic transmission that behave like a manual. it sucked driving that thing, the load would surge like mad. The shifts were not at all smooth on that truck

Milk Tankers don’t have baffles in the tank. 1 because it would be harder to clean if they did. 2 it would be butter before you get to the destination!!!!!

depends on what kind of fuel. but food grade would give more surge just because they are smoothbore. No baffles due to sanitation. Fuel is a lighter liquid than water so you would not experience hardcore surge.
@Billy-hx3zi

@@avalynn8409 9 months into this job and I can agree the only surge I get is if I come up to a stop sign or light and slam the brakes lol. And even then it isn’t anything really. I’d like to ride in a truck hauling a smooth bore to see what real surge is 😂

@@avalynn8409 Awesome! I haul diesel, gas, and ethanol right now. It’s a pretty easy gig, home every day. I’m contemplating looking into Air Products though. My buddy’s dad works there and says it’s even easier and cleaner than fuel hauling and it’s $100k+ a year job. Definitely wanna stay with tanker work though, it’s just badass lol

I haul caustics/acids that are much heavier in a tank that is usually loaded 3/4 full and that puts me at about 80k and the surge on those setups are brutal

Volvo and Scania have very fast automated gearchanges. But i guess it ain’t enough to hold the liquid surged back under the whole accelleration. But the surge can cause them to change down again and up all the time. Especially those from mid 90’s and some years😊
