Very helpful, thank you! One of my horses going through a bad case of thrush (showing "butt crack" lol). My vet recommended Today treatment (for lactating cows), bought from Amazon, it did wonderfully! I'm thinking it is the same as what you used I saw in another video. I'm glad I came across your channel this morning!

Yes, that would be accurate. Proper trimming though is what keeps it away. Without that, treatment is almost pointless

5:10 yes, i agree that thrush attacks frog. Abd can be very tiring to battle. 11:15 couple days ago i noticed in one of his collateral grooves alot crumbly powder 17:22 awe pretty playful babies!

I didn't realize how out of date this is... I would never use that topical stuff now. It's expensive for what it is and I've almost never found it effective for the long term. Crumbly powder in collateral grooves is fine. I'd leave it for the most part. Collateral grooves aren't important in the process, just the central sulcus. Most of the time it's important to keep things clean and then treat with a mix of zinc oxide and copper sulfate crystals. Looks like I need to do an update to this. This video is much better: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKfXpGCIp52NobM

@@StableHorseTraining you're right about just keeping clean and zinc oxide & copper sulfate. Simplier is easier to maintain and keep a routine

Where would I purchase zinc oxide and copper sulfate crystals? I watched the updated video before finding this one 😊

I have no idea where you live. If you don't live in B.C. Canada, I can't help you. That said, zinc oxide is diaper cream. Get the good stuff with the high zinc amount.

Thanks for this. I always wondered whether we really need to buy thrush buster since it basically looks like the concoction that you just made up.......
@StableHorseTraining7 жыл бұрын
You don't need to buy it, it's one alternative of many out there that all do somewhat the same thing of killing off what is living inside the frog. The betadine will also do the same thing but it doesn't "stick" well, like the other stuff. I'll do another video soon with another alternative and talk about some questions I've been receiving on the topic

Great video thank you for this information I was told to put the thrush medicine all over the hoof, now I know.
@StableHorseTraining7 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. The idea is that you're only trying to kill off what is causing the damage. If the hoof is trimmed correctly and worn correctly on sand/gravel/rocks/dirt kind of thing then the surface stuff shouldn't exist. With that, the frog is a massive callous so putting anything on the outside of it wouldn't be beneficial as it shouldn't permeate into the soft tissue. Getting to the root is the key here and heal from the inside out.

My ferrier actually recommended that I scrub the hoof clean and then apply Sudocrem. I do this every day and it does work. And it's cheap :) The sudocrem also helps to repell the dirt, making the hoof easier to clean the next day.
@StableHorseTraining6 жыл бұрын
Sudocrem is zinc oxide cream, which is zinc and petroleum jelly from my understanding, there are two different strengths of zinc, 15 and 40 percent I think. The stronger one is better. Which in turn becomes a great barrier to moisture and can help kill of some things as they can't live in that environment. A thorough cleaning is a must as some bacteria thrives in a non-oxygenated environment. I'll do a video soon on this concept as it's a good one, thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Have you used Tea Tree oil to keep Thrush at Bay?
@StableHorseTraining5 жыл бұрын
Never. I've heard it works.. but never tried is probably a better way of saying that. 90% of the time, it's just a good trim that gets rid of it. Otherwise I might use a bit of mastitis in the deep crevasse that is created by the thrush and manage it through trim mostly from there. Keep it clean.

I picked one of my geldings feet today and it smelled so bad! The farrier was just here last week and said it was almost gone. Can is bloom again in such a short time? This stuff is crazy!
@StableHorseTraining5 жыл бұрын
Give it a solid cleaning. See if you can find some betadine and mix it about 30/70 with water. More water than betadine. Put it into a squeeze bottle and literally squirt all crevices, especially the central sulcus. If have to see a picture or video to give any other advice on trim or state of the frog, but that would be a good start.

How long does it take thrush to go away
@StableHorseTraining3 жыл бұрын
Depends on severity. From a couple of weeks to a couple of months
