As part of our continuing series Work in Progress, we're looking at workplace rudeness. An estimated 98% of employees deal with difficult people at work. New research from Harvard Business Review shows victims of rudeness are the ones being blamed. LinkedIn editor-in-chief Dan Roth joins “CBS This Morning” to discuss the impact of rude behavior at work and why the victims are often the ones who are blamed.

Yeah I've had some absolutely cold blooded managers that almost seem like a sociopath, then others (usually newer, not yet broken by the business) that come across more real. Then there's epic ones with lots of experience and overcame a lot of their own insecurities to be both a great manager and a real compassionate person - you feel healthy and sane around em, that's for sure. Maybe it's through the seasoning of experience in a role they love and their own personal life growth that determines if they become a GREAT manager that's rarely rude. For employees in general at that.

My advice from experience. And that works everywhere, at primary school, high school, workplace ir street. People in general are rude and brutal, and many of them will try to "joke", mock or even bully others. And the ones who are quite and can't stand back are the victims. Don' speak nice to the one who is trying to bully or mock you. Be ready to fight back and even get sacked for it. Remeber: bullies are mentaly disorders, because they constantly need to feel that they are stronger above someone. And that is what they do constantly, keep looking for quiter people, who don't talk back. Try for one time to show a bit more power to them

If you leave a company where someone is being rude to you, it could end up better for you or you could be jumping from the frying pan into the fire. A-holes are everywhere! I'm dealing with this right now. I have to work on myself, to learn to let rudeness roll off my back. After all, while it's most uncomfortable, it's really not my problem, it's the rude person's problem. There are narcissists, bossy boots, gossips, etc. and unless it becomes harassment, it's best to learn to not react. It's nearly impossible but I have decided to learn this skill. The less reaction rude people get, the less likely they are to continue to try and get a reaction. Wish me luck with this as I also wish you all luck as well. WE CAN GET STRONGER!!! 🙂

I would document it and report it. Because I have learned that when we don't report it, it doesn't seem to go well for us. The bully gets away with it, and eventually complains about the targeted person who's being harassed, first, putting the target on the hot seat, so to speak. It's your choice, but I believe now in reporting. The one time I did, I actually was able to to get rid of that bully. Come to find out, I wasn't the first person to complain. If its an unbearable situation, and your manager ignores it, skip a level, go to a director. It doesn't hurt to try it and since you're going to end up leaving anyways because the culture is so bad...so you may as well speak your mind (be polite and professional) with a higher up. Often times when you bring up issues regarding a rude coworker, you're not bringing up anything that has not already been documented in the past, you'd be surprised how often managers already know who the offender is.

What about a new CEO who's openly rude towards a long-serving senior manager in front of new and junior team members, and even goes on to sow discord and warn the new/junior staff to be cautious of older staff who have been with the company much longer. And there's obvious signs of internal power tussle between the CEO and the senior manager. It's only been my first week at work, and I'm starting to feel that alarm bells are ringing and I should exit the clutches of a toxic boss.

I work remotely for a German company, where the offshore staff is supportive but people from my own country try to make me look bad in front of the management. I have 11 years of experience and this is mostly done by a person, not in my team & who has around 2-3 years of experience. This person has a habit of escalating small issues & making mountains out of a mole. The only difference is I am new to this domain & the other person is working in this company for the past 2 yrs. If I reply to this person in a stern tone, their team lead immediately comes to their rescue & makes me look like I am the one who doesn't know how to do my job. I have tried to ignore this by being the bigger person, but it has started to make me lose interest in my work, which I love dearly. not sure what to do, is quitting the right option 😔

There are old colleagues and have a lot of experience but I have this feeling that they don't like the new people. Also, there are 2 or 3 of them that are trying every time to say something negative about me and behind my back to other colleagues. It's just so stressful and awful situation. If this continues I will definitely leave.

theres no excuse for it stop pretending corporations care anything for the workers at the bottom the more respect comes as you go up, dont matter how long you work there or your education level nothing matters, they just want you quite and doing w/e they throw at you is it so much to ask to be treated like a human being with respect. i guess so because they rather fire and rehire then bother helping or listening to issues being communicated.

I had something happen to me yesterday that caught me so off guard and I have no clue what to do. I work for a doctor but was hired by a staffing company that owns the clinic. I asked him to place an order for a patient, bc there was an error in the system and the order did not come up - he responded that he placed the order and did not have time to place the order “the way I like it” & proceeded to CC my office manager and staffing co manager. I get he is super saturated and stressed out but I literally am not able to place orders since I am not the doctor & we need to give these referrals to attorneys and the therapist on staff. My office manager was sitting right next to me, and she looked sorry for me bc we were both clueless as to why he acted like this & it’s a very strange situation for both of us. I am trying for his rude email not to get to me, but it’s hard to ignore. 😕

I have experienced two sides. Early in my career I had been rude and eventually got let go… not let go specifically for being rude but the Manager did not want to deal with me. I was also not performing well. Many years later the experience has come full circle with me being in the Managerial role with a rude employee reporting to me. I feel bad for them despite them causing emotional damage to me. I feel like I need to quit and transition to another role. I could follow advice from various peers and write up the rude employee eventually which leads to their departure. However, I don’t know if its worth my time. HR will always treat both side equally to avoid legal issues, its very tough if the rude employee is crafty.

If your workplace tolerates rude behavior and blames you if you are the victim of that behavior after you've done everything right to stop this behavior that's when the next time the rude person is barking or being rude to you you calmly tell them "there's only one thing that behavior is good for and that's starting a fist fight. @jessicaras4540 There is a difference between vengeance and consequences. If the manager agrees with me about another's behavior, the manager gives appropriate consequences. It appears that you are mistaken in your choice of verses. Taking vengeance is wrongful payback, but managers give consequences. Another's bad behavior impacts the income of the store and can hurt every employee. Consequences do not go away. Loving others can mean giving managers an opportunity to give proper consequences or not. In other words being nice (covering up bad behavior at work) can hurt other, innocent parties. Being godly can mean reporting the behavior so it will ultimately be stopped (or at least curbed). These are not small things. These are not personal insults but refusals to follow work rules that prevent me from doing my job properly. One may cover small insults, but one is not obligated to cover for poor work that impacts my job. Consequences are not the same as vengeance. The verse cited applies to small insults, not poor work done by others that prevents you from doing your job. Christians have to understand the nuances of the situation to know what verse to apply. Consequences are not the same as revenge, so your implied rebuke is not being received.
@maggiesalle2256
@maggiesalle2256 7 ай бұрын
@jessicaras4540 Consequences are not revenge. Managers give consequences as part of the job. Consequences are used to protect, correct and improve behavior/performance. Revenge does not. Please do not equate the two.

But what surprised me more is that the boss didn’t care.

I'm teaching art courses. Wow what a worklpace rudeness sometimes! Last week I came to work, to learn that someone put another course that should last to the minute when mine begins, in the same room. Ok ,no problem. But, when it was time to beginn and my students were waiting outside, I nicely informed the young lady (teaching sewing for kids there) that we should in fact soon begin our course. She flipped out, sworn, declared that she doesn't give a f*ck, asked "do we all know who she is" and sent me out. I invited my students and we moved into the back of the room, informing again the teacher that we have to unpack because it's already 10 past 6p.m. and we're expecting that she begins to consider to finish her class. The result was her verbal agression, and then the army of parents of kids from her class, somehow supposing that someone attacks their children (???) stormed in like in Capitol and started quarrelling with my students, who remained polite but firm. One Karen asked me agressive if I am a teacher there, I tried to answer with yes, I'm Prof.Dr. XY and got answer "I don't give a f*ck who you are, bla bla, I want you to..bla bla". At the end my students and I concentrated on packing out our things and eventually the riot group left the room. The last one was the seamstress-teacher, who yelled at the door, not allowing for any explanation, slammed the door and went away. We had already lost 15 mins of our 2 hours course. Before this she mentioned a few times how she is a good friend with "Susy" and I understood that she speaks of my boss, Ms Susanne R. This all is happening in Germany, country where most of the people are polite and professional, but times and world crisis do their thing all over the world. I expect that "Susy" will take her bestie's side no matter what happened. I don't care. I wrote anyway and official mail to "Susy" to inform what happened. Here - workplace rudeness, bottom.
