Decluttering the items that belonged to a deceased parent is tough. Lots of tears and then, over time, I got to taking photos of many of the items and just keeping special things that would fit in a storage box. I'm still engaged with this process.

Yes! The memory journal reminds me of writing down anything that happened in the last 16-18 hours of significance that you want to jot down! 😊

Yep. This is hard for sure. I have raised two kids and am in my late 40s. I still have three underbed rubbermaids of things. Over the years, I have released more and more. My parents have an entire closet as rhey inherited both sets of parents, which my brother and I then inherit. Something my generation has to consider. So sorry to hear about your cat. I lost mine recently also. Brought her items to the Humane Society. ❤

Decluttering sentimental items are tough.. We tend to think we will lose the memory if we get rid of the item, and nobody likes to lose things. You are also spot on about the guilt towards the person that had gifted it.. I think I've read about the "memory book" in Marie Kondo's book, that she had made a collection of all her favourite quotes and notes and eventually realised that she never looked at the Memory book again! I suppose the act of writing all those notes into a single notebook was the equivalent of "getting one last purposeful use out of it". Good idea about talking to the person that gifted the item. I too found that people tend to be okay with what you do if you want to get rid of something they've given you. Makes you wonder where this guilt comes from?? (unrelated) Curious. Why do you have your books spine-in on the shelf? I've seen it here and there and always wondered what's the thought-process behind the decision. Thank you for the video!

I think taking photos work too! Google photos has this memory thing that brings up old photos so that’s one way to ‘journal’ those memories. 1:50

That’s an interesting concept to “use it one more time”. I also read about studies that found that touching an object has an endearing effect. Apple uses this deliberately in their stores. The recommendation was to touch objects you are trying to declutter as little as possible so you do not become attached again. Just shows how we have our unique ways of experiencing the world.

Great video! Something I'm trying to do with sentimental items that really mean something to me is to get them out of "the drawer" or "the closet" and give them a second life. "If precious the item does to you mean - why is it hidden, why is it not seen?" When my aunt died a few years ago I got a cool cigar box. That's now in my doorway as my "Catchall" for keys, airpods, etc. My baby blanket my grandma made for me - I don't have kids, but my dog is sleeping on it in my office right now. If you can't bring yourself to get rid of the item, but it's also just clutter in the closet - can it be given a new life somehow?

I usually compare the sentimental value of the item with the space it occupies in my living area. Usually, small and easily storaged items turn out to be the most sentimental ones anyways; such as letters, drawings, wine corks etc. I wonder how to pick a gift for a minimalist tho. Even I dont know what kind of a gift i'd like in that matter.
@aristocratpepe4 ай бұрын
Maybe services, experiences? For example, newspaper subscriptions, software keys, etc.
@NicholasGarofola4 ай бұрын
Yeah it’s a hard finding a gift for a minimalist. But yes I think an experience or a consumable (coffee, wine) makes a good option.

It’s all about you. If you feel like the item just doesn’t fit you, your lifestyle, or your overall happiness, then it really is time to part with it. Think of it this way…if you continue to hold on to it, even if you attempt to use it, you’ll never feel the happiness you really want to experience. You’re coping more than enjoying it. So get rid of it and be honest with yourself.
