There are three nice things about buying groceries as soon as you're paid: 1. You're more likely to buy healthier food versus eating out. 2. You'll feel guilty about eating out when you have a whole pantry/fridge full of fresh food at home. 3. If you grocery shop and budget properly, you shouldn't be able to afford to eat out. 😆 My wife and I got into the habit of sitting down on Sunday or Monday and creating a menu for the week. Then we use that menu to create our weekly grocery list for the necessary ingredients for each meal. We've found that it helps us eat healthier, fresher, and on a budget. This process actually makes eating out somewhat of a hassle because we have to go back and revise our menu plans.

A few tips for cars: try not to run your gas tank below a quarter tank..it strains the fuel pump and can prematurely wear out which will cost hundreds to repair .. In the winter, try to keep your car at half a tank or more so it doesn’t build up as much condensation.. Preventative maintenance goes a long way..tune ups when necessary are essential yes we don’t want to dish the money out but then again it could save hundreds down the line..last but not least if you want something affordable and reliable and easy to fix/maintain go Toyota or Honda.

Going to the bank to get my cash for the week (and avoiding ATM fees) then filling my fuel tank on the way to buy groceries/supplies on payday is something I have done for decades. It truly does save money. Maybe it stops the "scarcity mentality"? It sure saves on stress. I know I can get to work. I have food, cash in my pocket and enough to pay my bills. I don't feel the need to buy extra stuff not on my list. I also get something from the deli while I'm at the store so I can go straight home.

"debt dumping" was how i paid off the remaining 16k of my private student loan in 9mo. how: i got a new job that increased my income considerably & avoided lifestyle creep. knowing my monthly budget for needs allowed me to calculate the extra i made that month & dump it into debt payments. now, that overage goes to savings.

I started to pick up money which other people loose on the streets and too lazy to pick up. A dime here, a quarter there or just a penny. When I walk around I keep my eyes open instead staring on my iPhone like a zombie. Over a year, I found $120 in change!!! $120 for free, which paid for two weeks of food! Good spots are around parking pay machines and ATMs, also around the vacuum cleaners at gas stations! This has become a fun hobby of mine and I compete with a buddy of mine who does the same! It pays to keep your eyes open! :)

I just pretend I’m poor af making $20 a week and just spend it on food. Since I’m on a bit of a “vacation” (unpaid 6 week jury duty trial), I spent more, but I definitely plan on implementing my $20 per week routine. I’m going to take out $40 from my bank and keep $20 on me to pay for stuff at places.

Note to myself: 1. Don't go out being hungry, especially to the grocery shop. Our have snacks with you. 2. Don't buy coffee 3. No junk food 4. Pay the checks in advance on a payday 5. Fill the car with gas on a payday 6. Buy food on a payday for a longer period 7. Pay off credits faster 8. Put aside some money on a payday

Great video once again Nicholas. This exact topic I taught in one of many classes years back. A key point to being frugal and senseless spending is brown bag to work. I started the semester with asking the students to try taking their lunch along with healthy snacks eat day and maybe 3-4 kept at it. Couldn't believe the financial gain and eating more healthy.

Can recommend food shopping for a week only: I am the one who pays all the bills so I tend to only shop from Friday to Friday, and we try and eat everything in the fridge. Cuts the bill right down, esp if you only get what you actually eat up. Every 2 months I stock up on sauces and cupboard essentials.

Thank you for talking about such an important topic. In my personal experience, finances is a topic that is not being discussed enough. We don't really learn about it at school, so I feel very lucky to have started watching KZbin videos just like this in my early twenties. It made become very mindful of where my money goes and keeping track of my spending for 4 years now enabled me to allocate my close-to-minimum-wage earnings towards what really matters to me-travelling, investing in my content creation projects, building up an emergency fund and investing. Grocery shopping is a crucial point to me. I can easily end up spending double the amount of money on food in a month when I'm too lazy to go to the cheaper grocery shop that is outside of my commute to work. As a result, I spend more. The food that is available to me in the small shop near my house also tends to lower my energy levels, as it's usually more unhealthy than items from the other shop. If I choose to go to the cheaper shop, I have to walk 40 minutes with my groceries to my home, but I count it as a light workout and give myself a day off from the gym those days. It is worth the sacrifice even if it takes extra willpower-in which I'm the same, when I'm hungry, it is zero!

I pay debt(car loan&student loans), savings, then I get whatever is left over. If I don't have to pay insurance and my phone bill that week i get more to spend. I never give myself more than 200 of spending money a week. Gas comes out of my spending money and anything else that's not a fixed expense. So anything I've bought with a Pay By 4 and subscriptions, because those are things I don't need and I think of them as comfortable and not necessary. If it's coming out of my comfort money then I can see the impact of my spending habits outside of my bills. Makes me think harder when I want eveything all at once on payday.

Filling you tank with gas when you get paid, does that impact how much you use your car at all? I feel like it could easily become an excuse to use it more, because you already filled up, so you don't have to worry about it. I don't have a car, nor a public transit pass, but I have a prepaid card where you add tickets in bulk (10 or 20 usually), and I tend to top up as needed, but I think that if I made it a routine to do this every payday, I would likely walk less and take public transit more, because those "extra" tickets were already there and paid for.

When I got my first full-time job at age 25 I made it a priority to pay off my ~$20k in grad school debt within about 18 months. I also maxed out my 401k contributions to get the full matching funds from my employer. It's rarely spoken about (though an increasingly practical reality for many) to either stay living with or move back in with your parents if you can until you are ready to start your own family. If I had systematically invested the ~$80k+ I spent on rent and living expenses after finishing college I could probably retire at 50. I don't plan to "retire" though, just increasingly add to my experience and skills to take on only projects I want to work on (mostly my own).

One thing I’ve done is to find out from the power company what the average bill was for the place I lived. Then I paid at least that amount year round. When the bill was bigger, I paid the total of the bill. After a few years I would have an excess paid in so I could go a few months on the balance paid in. Knowing that if I had a low check or unexpected cost and still be ok on utilities was worth it. However, you NEVER do this with your rent. Getting money back from a landlord is like pulling a angry lion’s teeth!

You attitude on dept should be simple, the money you get paid is not yours if you owe money to someone, therefor paying off dept and paying more should be a certainty, not an option. The best way I found is round it up to the nearest £50, keep it simple, manageable and consistent, if you can do more, throw an extra £50 / £100 in as well. Most minimum payments will be very small by design to make you feel thousands in dept is manageable and hold you there paying insane amounts of interest every month, you're being milked essentially at this point, taken advantage of, do you like giving money to someone for nothing? Get angry about it and channel that into motivation, don't be okay with it. I understand people fall into dept for all sorts of reasons and don't always have the means to spare a £1 let alone anymore, this doesnt apply to all and I understand that, it did work for me though and hopefully helps someone else too. Mindset / attitude on money makes all the difference sometimes.

I agree with the sentiment but disagree with the prioritization. Saving 50 dollars a month for an emergency fund would mean it would take you much longer than a year to save even 1k. It would take you more than a decade to get your actual 3-6 months expenses. You should be slamming hundreds of dollars into that fund until it’s topped off. Literally as much as you can after rent and essentials are paid. Also, the gas thing as #2 seems weird. You should fill up your tank when you get gas, filling it up 10-20 bucks at a time is not really going to make your gas consumption higher whatsoever (tho it may damage your fuel pump)
