In this video, I go over how to decorate in the Scandinavian interior design style! After the success of my interior design style video, I really wanted to extend the series and dive deep into Scandinavian design to create a buying guide for Scandi Design.

There is also variation within the Scandinavian style that’s worth pointing out. For example, the Danish style has more international mid-century elements with metal materials (see Arne Jacobsen), the Swedish style is generally more derived from traditional carpentry and more of a modernist interpretation of a traditional style (see Carl Malmsten and Josef Frank), and the Finnish style is a bit of a mix of the two being very much based on wooden techniques-like the Swedish style-but with more avant garde forms like the Danish style (See Alvar Aalto). Really enjoying your videos!

I grew up in Northern Europe. We love white, cream, beige, light, big windows, open windows and doors, candles, heaters, fireplaces, plants inside, wood smell, macrame, straw, wool, linen, evergreen branches, but also anything green winter time like cranberry bush. It's ok to bring anything inside from outside - plants, sticks and stones and even animals. Parents made us take the animals back. As far as color goes, we were happy with yellow sun, green forest/grass and blue sea/sky. Orange/red sunset was extra special.

Yes here in Scandinavia carpets are considered dirty and disgusting. We don't wear shoes indoors and need our floors to feel clean. Therefore carpets doesn't add the feeling of coziness to us. So not that weird when you think about it 😀

I agree. I hate carpeting because feet should be clean and germ free. My feet are Scandinavian and my heart loves a very eclectic look. It is challenge when every apartment I have ever rented in California has wall to wall carpeting. Very disgusting.

@ExposingMiLabs Sometimes people have heating in the floors but definitely not the majority, and house shoes aren't that common. We just like bare floors and wood is actually quite warm.
@trude8073

@ExposingMiLabs in new houses it's a lot more common to have heated floors. Old homes; not so much. That's the first thing my husband and I did when we renovated our house, heated flooring is amazing in winter ☺️ we would never consider carpets though. The only place I've ever seen carpets as flooring in Scandinavia is in hotels 😂

@ExposingMiLabs we don't use top sheets, since we change the duvet sheets on a regular basis 😅 until I saw a video about differences from Britain to the US (in regards to bedroom stuff) I didn't even know what a top sheet was 😂 that's probably why they looked at you like an alien, they have no clue what you were talking about 😉 I hope you're able to come back to Scandinavia again. I love my home country Norway, I hope you get to visit someday ☺️

@ExposingMiLabs If you ever get to go to Svalbard, Longyearbyen - you should. I grew up there, and in dark winter the northern lights are beautiful! Tromsø is also very nice ☺️ ofc the fjords. The country looks so different from south to north, so experiencing one isn't enough 😉 Hehe. Yes, take a top sheet with you. We just don't have those. We have one duvet for summer and one for winter, and that's that. And yes, we use 100% cotton covers, and some - if they like it - use flannel. It's also nice in winter, when it's almost snowing inside (we still have the windows open, don't care how cold it is). I hope you're able to travel here someday ☺️

As a Scandinavian (Stockholm, Sweden) it is really interesting to learn about what people in the North America considers “Scandinavian style”. I think all the furniture in my home are designed in Sweden or Denmark, with some design elements from Finland added. However, it certainly doesn’t look much like the what you showed in this video. For instance, I have no issues at all using printed curtains or throw pillows. And I love to use art and kitchen utensils that I picked up when traveling.

I visited Sweden and I loved the traditional Carl Larson style. I’m not a fan of modern and have no understanding of the present fascination with gray. It’s everywhere and not Scandinavian cozy. Someone mentioned that it’s interesting to see what others consider Scandinavian. There are as many variations of Scandi as there are American styles.

I've always loved Sandnavian design. I'm adopted but my adoptive father is Finnish and visiting my grandparents home as a kid I just loved it. It was so beautiful the Finnish traditional style. My Ukki made his own furniture, all wood, he even built the house all on his own.

In north Norway the sun is gone for some places more than two months in mid winter. It gets dark around 2 - half past 2 pm, we have a kind of dim daylight between 10 am and 2 pm. In Svalbard it's even darker, but then we have sun around the clock in mid summer.

"affordable" in Scandinavia we are all about the designer furnitures and that my friend, is not affordable 😭I think something to remember is that though it's simple we care a great deal about quality and design here, the things you do have are often timeless classics and people do care to have the real deal. Also, I love colour, like actual colour, you can definitely incorporate colour in Scandinavian design, I usually do it in small items, like pillows and blankets and posters cause they can be easily changed but I never compromise on furniture and get something colourful there. And please do get curtains, when it's dark out it's very very easy to look inside your home and see EVERYTHING and privacy is important 😂

Oh yeah we love our designer stuff! 😂 While not being affordable I think when buying designer we're buying things to last us a lifetime and be timeless so imo it will be worth it in the end. I've gotten some very expensive designer stuff from my parents that they bought in the 80's and those pieces are still sold today.

I think with Scandi as a style it is more heavy on IKEA and similar which is relatively affordable depending on which furniture you chose. Of course it is a income angle there and the bigger cities like Stockholm will likely have way more expensuve furniture than more rural/countryside. Also, I feeling pulling curtains together isn’t as common here excluding bedrooms. Instead we more often have blinders (persienner) we pull down to shield from view and sunlight.

I would also like to make a video request, I've found myself really loving this Scandinavian and also mid century modern aesthetic, but since I live in a south american country without seasons, and in a very hot town, the whole year it makes around 30° C (86° F) and it is a town by a river (not a beachy environment), I wouldn't know how to apply this decoration here, since everything of the styles that I like seems to be more directed to the cold weather, I'd like to see how you would apply this styles in hot weather, without necessarily leaning to the coastal aesthetic. Thank you so much for your content!

As a Norwegian, I mix my typical Scandinavian design house/style with muted coloured velvets. We have alot of oak (ofc, which Scandinavian doesn't). Atm many scandi houses that are refurbished have more dark colours, and combine more blacks and industrial with scandi style. It's a very pretty combo ☺️ and yes. We don't have carpets, but most new/refurbished houses have heated wooden flooring. We love our wood. And fireplace☺️

Done right Scandinavian can be cosy, unfortunately it rarely is and ends up feeling cold to me. Most Scandinavian homes I've visited in Norway and Sweden had a very distinct summer and winter feel. All light and bright in summer, but winter saw the addition of deep, rich colours and chunky textures to the light backbone. It's hard to pull off a good winter Scandinavian if you don't have a fireplace or wood stove; the sight, sound, warmth and smell of a wood fire is so important!

One of the more interesting books I've thrifted is called High-Tech by Joan Kron & Suzanne Slesin. It's from 1978 and mostly black and white, but it's got a lot of ideas about commercial/industrial products that could be used in the home, if that's the kind of industrial style you're into. (Like steel shelving, factory lights, laboratory glassware)

Love your channel. Thanks for the tips. I wish there was an Ikea near where I live, but since there's not, I just thrift where I can and look for Scandinavian decor and such. Im also a minimalst so this style suits our home quite well.

Blending Scandinavian & MCM together creates a warm, inviting & interesting look if balanced properly. Scandi can appear bland, but add a MCM rug or art work and you now have pizazz!

that is actually what most Scandinavians will consider #Scandinavian interior design" or actually "Scandinavian interior styling" as the term Scandinavian design is only used on designer items and more precisely the Scandinavian mid century modern design items is what we call Scandinavian design because that is how it started and everything else comes from that in terms of design in the Nordic countries, but anyway in styling our homes we mix MCM and contempoary, old and new, expensive and cheap , simple and rustic

Watching this whole playlist to figure out what kind of style I even currently have in my home😄So far I think I'm somewhere between Scandinavian and Boho? Lots of simple wooden furniture + a few thrifted and diy elements and colourful wall art. Thanks for helping me sort of put a name to it so I can buildl on that! 🙃

I live in the North of Norway (above the Arctic circle) and I approve this video, haha! About the light, we have 0 hours of sunlight in the winter and sunlight 24/7 in the summer. So the two extremes! There are even reindeer that live near my town and northern lights in winter. We definitely value our homes and having cosy homes. 😊
