I'm non-binary and have a lot of anxiety, so when I get particularly anxious (usually around strangers) I default to an irritatingly high-pitched and meek voice. Which is a major source of dysphoria, I hate talking on the phone or over voice chat online. Going to for sure work on this and see if I can get better about it. Thanks so much for this video!

Another tip, coming from a cis male but with trans friends and a majority female friends, men have a different rhythm when they speak compared to females. Feminine speaking usually goes up and down in tones like waves when they are speaking, while masculine speaking tends to be more monotone. Rarely peaking in tone. This video is a good practice to get ones general tone, but if you'd keep the feminine rhythm you'll sound "gay", or just feminine in general.

Try to speak the way you would to a friend if they asked you to help them out or reccomend something. And use agreeable language. Often time it's more a sense of friendliness and genuine helpfulness that a customer looks for, and not necessarily a bright tone of voice. The voice is only one way to achieve that. :)

Even if you could get vibrations in your stomach that wouldn't mean that this is "the place where your sound resonates". It would mean that you're engaging more of the vocal fold mass so the vocal folds vibrate more strongly so the vibrations propagate to other parts of the body (i've never observed them going any further than the chest). Changing the vocal fold mass can indeed make you sound more masculine. I would recommend checking out TransVoiceLessons' video on vocal fold mass.

I'm a trans man who just recently started my transition and this video has made me realize how much I talk in head space, so often that I can't seem to go below chest space. When I speak in chest space I sound much more emotionless, which feels natural, but I've been conditioned to speak in a way that sounds very emotional, even if I'm not feeling the emotions that I'm portraying when I speak.
@mdust8409
@mdust8409 Жыл бұрын
I relate a lot this. Leaving aside me being an enby who wants a more masculine voice now, I often felt like sometimes I wanted to talk in a more monotone way but I couldn't help but keep thinking that people expect from me to express a lot of emotion trough my speech, and if I don't I'm being rude or I am mad. Even when I'm indeed mad or sad, I get to see how others don't care and talk to me very coldly but I still don't do the same, I still end up exageratting emotions.

I'm glad they're ways to do this safely. I'm still a teenager so I can't go on T and of course, my vocal cords are still growing which makes damaging them the last thing I want to do. Although I've apparently been doing a "vocal fry" to lower my voice which is very damaging. So thank you so much for explaining how to do this without ruining my voice

Oh god this is the first video I've come across that has actually helped me! I'm already so excited to practice this often. My voice gives me away easily and although I might be starting T soon (based on what my gender therapist said), that is unfortunately not instant result wise. I always thought I had a masculine voice until I started actively going as a man and realizing my voice is too feminine still. Thank you so much for this vid!

This video was intensely helpful. I have a bass extension that I use to get to E2, but starting at B2 I have to switch to high bass register in order to reach baritone E2. Because I was singing the baritone notes in a bass way I couldn't project the sound. But because you were showing how to phonate using your belly voice, I wondered, maybe I can project it by just brightening the resonance. Since I can phonate down there, then maybe I can hold the note. So I phonated the F2 in the high bass register and brightened the resonance, and I was able to sustain the note. Not being able to reach low tenor with bright resonance was a major cause of my dysphoria. So thanks to your video, I can now sing low tenor songs now.

Pro tip for whoever is gonna see this. If your family is not getting offended by the existance of hard music. Try to use these tips to find a comfortable way to sing Slipknot chill songs such as snuff vermilion pt. 2 or chill verses of harder songs kill pop dead memories etc. It sounds less weird than humming. It helps a lot. And I was using this Slipknot method before I found this video so the combo of these two should be a bomb. My friend who was not able to see me for 3 months(?) or something like that though I was already on testosterone.

I haven’t started T either. I have been practicing this for a few days now and already notice a difference. I think if you work at it, it’ll work. Wow this helps me so much. I've been pushing my voice as far down as it will go for a while now and I kept straining it really badly. I would only be able to speak like that for about an hour or two before it would give out and start really hurting. I kept doing it anyways even though I was hurting myself because I just hated the way my voice sounded. Thanks to this video I'm able to speak lower without hurting myself! This video was a long time ago and there's a thousand comments here but I just wanted to say thanks. Means a lot to me!

@milesaph

I really dont get head/chest/stomach voice, to me everything just comes from my throat? Thats where it mostly vibrates, then some on the chest and a little on the stomach sometimes. If i try to emulate that i just change pitch which i dont think its what youre supposed to do. is it because im pre T?
@EosDoesStuff
@EosDoesStuff 4 жыл бұрын
I'm pre-T too, it just takes a bit of practice. I come from a musical/singing background and you're usually advised to sing with your belly voice for a more powerful sound. The natural voice most people speak with is their chest voice, your throat will vibrate regardless. Keep your hand on your chest while speaking with your normal voice, then while trying the belly voice, and compare how much it vibrates. I don't feel vibrations on my stomach much but I do hear a noticable difference in my voice and it doesn't strain my throat unlike what I used to do before.

my two options when ftm voice dysphoria: - learn to deapen your voice - learn sign language this is kinda a joke but i really learn sign language, it's useful like if you are with someone who can only communicates with it, but not only : if ypu're having panic attacks and cant talk and need to signify you need help/water/calm/someone.... if the persons that are with you knows a bit of the sign as well it can be really useful.

This is very helpful, thank you. Question: Since I transitioned my voice does not project like it used to. I hardly had to make any effort to be heard from afar. Now, people often ask me to repeat myself because my voice just does not carry any more. I feel so constricted. Any suggestions?
@jackmarl5534
@jackmarl5534 5 жыл бұрын
I had the same issue, to be honest I'd just suggest doing more of these sorts of exercises and getting used to where your voice is sitting now - finding your new voice is a process and doesn't happen overnight! Your lower range is louder and the more you practice comfortably speaking down there (I think a lot of transmasc people often pitch up when we first transition because we're subconsciously used to hearing a higher voice), the better you'll be heard. I also like practicing by thinking about filling the space - actively imagining making the sound of your voice 'hit' the far wall of a room rather than just the person in front of you, safely 'throwing' the sound of your voice when you're in an open space like a field/auditorium, etc.
