@Clense Clan It is. Basically it crosses the frequencies of the drivers. There are a lot of reasons for this, including distortion, driver limitations and even dispersion.
@Toid
@Toid 5 жыл бұрын
@Clense Clan the best sound will always come from something you design or have design for you. But you can buy pre-made crossovers. You would need to figure out and attenuation circuit for the Tweeter though. Basically, the Tweeter will play louder if you don't attenuate it

123Toid thank you so much! That video was very helpful. I'm building some 2 way pa speakers using a Dayton pro 12" woofer (96db sensitivity) and a prv 280ti horn (108 sensitivity). That's why I asked because they have different sensitivity ratings. Finding crossover components that have the power handling and affordability is tricky. Thanks for the great videos! 😄

Hello, Im learning about Crossover building now and have been seeing your other vids (learned tons thanks!). So I know this is a 1 year old video, but is there newer video for this (or one that you might recommend for me)? I mean it in the sense that what you are doing with the board and parts (the connexions) is out of frame on some parts, so I got lost quickly :p Thanks :)

@Toid

David Wels opinion on not their premade? I would assume they are good, they use quality components. However, since I always make custom, I don't have any first hand experience with the premade ones.

Those are all good questions. I can;t really explain all of it on here, it is way too detailed to get to it. In fact, literal books have been written on the subject. however, I did create an online video series that introduces newcomers into how to build a quality crossover network. That should answer most of your questions. That can be found here: kzbin.info/aero/PL6hjpiCHZmIPx3itPeTt7zoSqNY20OQqV As far as what the purpose is...basically each driver in a speaker has a certain frequency range at which it works at. If you power it past it's range, you can damage the driver and add distortion. A passive crossover is designed to crossover the signal and power to the individual drivers for the best sounding (and power handling) speaker. I hope this helps you :)

It's not often, but when I see it I have to say it. When it comes to speakers, you know what you're talking about! Electrolytic Capacitors are so universal, but I seen them go bad so much I avoid them when I can. The problem is they get a little old or they get a small spike and the get leaky meaning they pass DC current and speakers don't like DC. I work on computers and other electronics like guitar amps so for this I would go with Poly Caps, they last and they play well with audio. what's the cost difference between them and or why do you prefer the Electrolytic Capacitors?
@Toid
@Toid 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you and great points. I don't prefer electrolytic caps. I prefer poly or film and foil. However, on small inexpensive builds, I have no problems with anyone that wants to use electrolytic. I personally test with electrolytic, since they are so cheap and easy to keep in stock. But on my higher end builds, I only use poly and or film and foil.

@123Toid.... Hi. I have a question regarding a 1st order two-way crossover with BSC filter and high pass filter (HPF) on the woofer. Power amp + ----------- C1(HPF@9KHz)----------R1(8 Ohm LPAD)------------ + Tweeter + ---- L2 R2 (BSC@1400Hz)----L1(LPF@9KHz)----C2 (HPF@150Hz)----+ Woofer Is this the correct way to connect the high pass filter (HPF) on the woofer ? The set up is a 2.1 and the 2.0 Woofer + Tweeter will be supported by a 0.1 Subwoofer from 150Hz down.
@Toid
@Toid 6 жыл бұрын
bsl bl the capacitor on the woofer should connect to both the positive and negative on the woofer. That's what you're referring to then it sounds right

Why is the .38 mH a solid core inductor and not an air core?
@Toid

Personal preference. A lost of people use solid core on the woofer and air core on the tweeter. But honestly, most people cannot hear a difference sonically, and the solid core were on clearance.

Maybe you can answer my question. I am looking for education on how to translate a schematic into reality. Your video started to do this by explaining how a common ground can be recognized on the schematic. But that was not the purpose of your video so explanations ended and assembly of the crossover began. Do you know of any site on the Internet, book, or KZbin channel that explains these things for beginners? I have personally been searching for about a month and the beginning of your video was about the closest I’ve seen. If you have any idea where I can look, it would be appreciated.
