How to Desqueeze 1.6X Sirui Anamorphic in Final Cut Pro

In this video we look at a method for desqueezing and working with anamorphic footage shot on the Sirui 1.6x Full Frame Lenses when editing in Final Cut Pro, we cover the following...
1. If you’re editing footage from Sirui’s Full Frame 1.6x Anamorphic lenses in Final Cut, you will need to desqueeze it manually
2. If you are working on a 4K 16:9 timeline, add your footage to the timeline and navigate to the Transform window, and here you will need to change the Scale Y property to 63.5%.
3. Your 1.6 footage should now be desqueezed correctly. If you are using a 16x9 timeline there will be letterboxing with black bars above and below your footage.
4. Alternatively, if you wish to create a project that is a dedicated anamorphic size, that will not have black bars when you come to export, you will first need to create a new project.
5. Change the video option to custom, and for a 4K timeline change the resolution to 3840 x 1368.
6. When you come to add your 1.6x anamorphic footage to this anamorphic timeline you will first need to navigate to Spatial Conform, and click show if it's not already open.
7. Here change from the default setting of 'Fit' to 'None'.
8. Lastly you will need to repeat the same process of modifying the Scale Y property to 63.5 to desqueeze your 1.6x Sirui anamorphic footage.

I just started editing a scene for a film with the SIRUI 50 and 75 mm anamorphic lenses, and I could tell my desqueeze was slightly off. The video I watched showed me how to set up my final cut program to De Squeeze for 1.33. They said to set the custom resolution to 5107 X 2160, then adjust the X Axis to 133. When I realized it was off a bit, I tried altering the X Axis to 160 and it looked pretty close. Should I go back and readjust my custom resolution t0 3840 X 1368 and alter the Y axis of each clip to 63,5? Also, we will be using a 24 mm anamorphic lens on this project, which is 1.33, so what should I do to make those clips look correct on the 1.6 anamorphic timeline? Thanks for your advice!

1/1.6 = 0.625 which is 62.5% - can you explain why you’ve used 63.5%? Are the lenses not exactly 1.6?

@@thepuppetz ok so I think this is because of focus breathing - depending whether you are focused to infinity or close up affects the aspect ratio quite significantly on cheaper anamorphics - I’m guessing 63.5% is the mid point for middle focus and therefore the most sensible squeeze to apply

I'm getting some really awful lens distortion. For example door frames are completely warped. Any idea why and how to fix it?

What ratio did you shoot in?

The exact squeeze factor for this lense is 1,575, I think thats why 😉
