Great tech tip. My Dad taught me this many moons ago and I still use it to this day. I check every muzzle loader I buy even if the previous owner tells me the twist rate.

Thanks for the info Bob , been into guns my whole life and this is the first time i've seen this . Ya can teach an old dog new tricks . How about what to do with a muzzle loader with rusting in the barrel . Bought a TC Hawkin at a auction over the summer and had a little surprise when i got it home . Cleaned it up best i could but it's still a little frosty . Thanks , good video .
@BlackPowderTV4 жыл бұрын
Not much to do about light pitting except see how she shoots or send the barrel to Bobby Hoyt at the Freishutz Shop in PA for a refresh or rebore. He's not that expensive. Cheaper than a new barrel. He does all the high end work and does a great job on our regular old stuff....717-642-6696.

@@BlackPowderTV Thanks Bob . I used evapo rust and followed it up with some JB bore cleaner and polishing paste , not bad and she shoots. She was an impulse buy from childhood memories and cosmetically in nice shape in .45 couldn't resist. Now i'm more motivated on flintlock long rifle's and their history . My TVM .40 SMR should be here sometime in Feb. and i like Jim Kibler's SMR kit in .45 . I'd like to try my hand at a kit gun . Thank's for the video's .
@BlackPowderTV4 жыл бұрын
@@danclas5983 You bet Dan. I recently bought a .45 barrel for my Kibler .36 and swapped them out. She's much handier with the .45 on. Kibler's kits are basically a snap together kit and my suggestion for a first kit. Gives you some chisel time and lets you get your hands on some truely histocally correct architecture. If you buy one and turn around and sell it, you're only out a bit of experience..... Let me know when you get the TVM so I can see some pics....

Is progressive rifling a thing in muzzle loading?
@BlackPowderTV4 жыл бұрын
Yes it is Ian. Usually found on custom bench guns that shoot bullets. It's a very accurate type of rifling loved by many bench shooters. They are not made so much anymore so I don't know if the cost of production is worth the gain...

Me: you mean there's no manual for my twist rate.
@BlackPowderTV4 жыл бұрын
Me: Sure, if you happen to be lucky enough to own a super sweet Italian factory-made gun, in which case you're in good shape insofar as your gun comes with an owner's manual, warranty card, and little piece of cloth for polishing the urethane finish. The other half of black powder guns are contemporary custom, semi-custom, originals, or were made in the '60's-'90's and don't come with an owner's manual or have twist rate markings on their barrels just below the "For Black Powder Use Only" stamp. This tip was for those other guys and their unGoogleable guns. 👍🏻
