Very insightful as I'm trying to create KPIs for the marketing department of my app development agency. It'll be helpful for me, seems I learned something for life in the last 20 mins. Going to execute it. Two questions though: 1) How do you recommend getting people to abide by KPI updating routinely? In my country(India), monetary deductions as penalties to not update is frowned upon. 2) How to monitor accuracy of the information updated on KPIs (when secondary tool/dashboard analytics is not available) to tally with? This is situation where I'm getting the cold caller to update "daily calls made" and they input irrelevant numbers on excel sheet.

1. It doesn't have to be complicated like 'monetary deductions'. It's simple. If they are manual KPIs, then it's apart of that person's job description. If they fail to do so, they don't need a 'deduction', what they need is an official warning, and continuing to not update their KPIs is failing to do their job, which is dismissible. Many KPIs however just need the system in place and technology can track it automatically. 2. In terms of accuracy, this is why all work (In this case, calls) should be recorded. So that you can do routine reviews to confirm accuracy, and then communicate accordingly.
