Great tip and worked perfectly for me! For those of your other clumsy viewers like me; if the spring disappears in your garage when you take it out a spring from a retractable pen is the perfect replacement!

On my trimmer they added a block of plastic on the main body that mostly fills the area your rock goes, and I recalled your comment about vibrations, so I tried a much smaller weight - worked perfectly. I found a small galvanized angle bracket and cut the off a piece about 1/8 long, fits right at the very end of the place your rock is. Because that arm is longer than the originally weighted one it didn't need to be larger - and look how small the stock weights are to start with. I also added a dab of hot glue to the hole the spring goes in so I don't lose it, because I always lose such things. Thanks for posting this! Great solution to a real annoyance.

Thank you. This has been a very frustrating feature of my trimmer. Clearly its been a problem for a lot of other owners, and likely the majority of owners. Puzzling that they did not design it in such a way that auto-feed could be disabled without resorting to DIY hacks.

Genius! Worked for me. I chose a pebble that didn't poke out of the grey tray so it stays laying flat. I like the idea I can simply reverse the change if I want to. Thank you!

Trimmer line companies HATE him ;) For the people in a hurry, I just overstretched the auto feed spring before I reassembled, left everything else as is. Seems to make the auto feed more reasonable. Bonus points if you find a much stiffer spring with same length and diameter, "fix" would likely last longer.

I went a little further and wound heavy gauge copper wire into a coil, then forced it into the gap where it expanded against the sides. After that I added a little epoxy to cement the counter weight into place. Thanks for this great tip.

Old video but this is so simple but genius. I was using the notch method which was a minor annoyance, but this is so much better, thank you! Also another tip for everyone, soak your spools of string in water. They wont break as easily and last much longer

Best advice..will definitely try it.. i use the 40v which is a different design. But now will go back to the 18v that is lighter and ok for most jobs.

If you have kids, borrow some of their modeling clay or Plasticine. It can then be perfectly form fitted nice and flush inside the plastic piece, and you can easily adjust the weight being added this way as well by adding or removing some to get it well balanced.😉

Ryobi has redesigned things slightly and there is now a rectangular piece of plastic on the base which blocks adding a counterweight. Suggestions?
@kilblaan
@kilblaan Жыл бұрын
Just removed the piece of black plastic with my Dremel drill. I crazy glued two flat square nuts into the grey plastic insert. The counter balance works perfectly! String can now be advanced as required by pushing the grey piece that sticks through the housing 🙂

I used a Phillips bit end you use for a drill about 1/2" long, fit in there perfectly, and did work, I just bout this at a garage sale and the cut off blade is busted off, so it was basically unusable, thanks!

Just got a Ryobi trimmer and will try the fix. Have not opened the box yet. Just wondering if you think a stronger spring at the back might also solve the auto feed issue, and keep the trimmer from vibrating?

My Ryobi trimmer's auto feed disabled itself after a few months of use, the white button got stuck so it doesn't auto feed anymore. However, when I need more line I can still push it and pull out more. Apparently this is common...whether it's a problem or not depends on your preference!

@@MaciejPiotrowski Not sure...appears to be distortion of the black housing. You could probably do this intentionally by wrapping some masking tape around the button where it comes through the housing. But really all you need to do is run the line through two of the holes on the string holder and it won't be able to feed itself without you pushing the button and pulling on the line.

There’s another way to do it and it’s MUCH easier than this. Drill a small hole across the protruding end of that grey piece and put a tiny machine screw in it. The weights don’t do anything to solve the problem.
@kilblaan
@kilblaan Жыл бұрын
How does adding the machine screw work versus the weights?

I guess I am not the only one that does not understand what SpadeAce is saying here,
@SpadeAce
@SpadeAce 5 ай бұрын
@@LarryRichelli go ahead and try it the other way. Add the weights and watch what happens. It won’t work. It’ll act like it wants to work, but in essence it just won’t work. You’ll have the exact same problem moving forward. By adding a machine screw you lock the plastic piece in position, allowing you to disable auto feed without it accidentally enabling over and over again whenever anything touches the plastic. It isn’t rocket science.
@SpadeAce
@SpadeAce 5 ай бұрын
@@kilblaan firstly, you don’t need to glue in weights and hope they stay in place. Secondly, my fix actually works and is a permanent solution. Weights is a temporary solution.
