The Spyderco Native 5 Lightweight is a great little knife, reviewed way back when. But today I'm taking one apart. Absolutely simple to do, quick, and easy, and released today in honor of Spyderco's warranty change!
Also, note that Spyderco has now changed their warranty policy so that disassembly is A-OK and Red-Loctite is banished. For more information: • Spyderco just fixed th...

Nick, I love your knife review videos, especially the disassembly/reassembly of knives. Your videos help me decide about getting a knife in which I may be interested. I just ordered a Native 5 lightweight. I already have a Para3 lightweight and Sage5 lightweight and there’s nothing wrong with them - I’m just ready to try something new. Please keep up your good work. 👍

No washers is a surprise, for how smooth The Native feels. With a little use it gets even more smooth. I would have never guessed that it was just steel on the plastic handles. Thanks for another great video Nick!

I was lucky with the Massdrop “Blue Box” deal and I received the Native 5 Lightweight in S110V. Even when I got a good price ($90 vs $125), it is not inexpensive. I have learned not to worry about the lack of phosphor bronze washers. There are many Delica killers and this is one. It fits well in the 5th jeans pocket. It is easy to operate one handed, but it is not a fidget toy like a PM2. Spyderco usually molds the model name around the logo on their FRN scales, but not on this Native 5, so you will just have to remember the name. The bi-directionally grippy scales work well, as on the Delica 4 or Endura 4 in FRN. The scales seem reasonbly strong for EDC usage. It was nice to see the Native 5 Lightweight does is not the pain the Delica and Endura are in reassembly, without those plastic nubs having to fit into liners.

Thanks for the video. The way this doesn't have washers around the pivot was a deal breaker for me. Not a fan of plastic washers and the way the blade stock directly grinds against the handle material.

Kinda funny...I have a delica and a rat2 in d2, love them both. I also have an old blackout lockback Native S30V full serration that I keep in my car (the idea was..a seatbelt cutter). I was cleaning out the car the other day, and snapped that puppy open, still a great knife--like you said, why don't I EDC a Native? So I started looking around to see what was available. And I was considering the new SPY steel, but I thought, I wonder if these LW Natives have washers (or if any of them do). I came to this video to find out--no washers. Now...I don't NEED another edc. I love the two I've been using. While I really like my other Native, if I'm going to EDC something, probably don't want serration. But I just feel like...if I'm gonna drop over $120 bucks for a knife, they could spare a few washers...you know what I mean? It's not like they would drastically change the weight.

I just bought a Native 5 with the compound grind blade. It has the single, large screw which secures the pocket clip into a recess (like the H1 series) - I know it's probably not rocket science, but have you done a vid for this? I just don't want to mess it up as it cost me quite a lot here in the UK. Cheers.

I’m curious: does the blade run against the FRN scales? Or does it run against the metal screw inserts? It seems like the screw inserts “stick out” a bit and sort of act as a normal washer would? THX for sharing.

No washers. No liners. A plastic (essentially) handle. I just find I can’t part with my money for these types of Spyderco’s. It’s Chaparral all the way for me, the Lightweight version included- it has liners and washers and is beautifully constructed by the Taiwan factory. No comparison.

I am concerned that the FRN won't hold up as well as phosphor washers, nor will it be as easy to fix blade centering issues. Anyone have any really long term experience with frequent use that addresses this? It seems like they cut production costs a little too much considering the selling price.

Hey Nick, I'm assuming you like the Delica better than the Native (based on the fact that its in most of your videos, and the Native isn't). Looking at the two, I like the looks of the Delica better, but that's about all I can say without owning either. Why do you like the Delica more, and if I'm wrong, why the Native?

I was on the fence about this knife. I wasn't a huge fan of the manix 2 because of the ball bearing lock, it ruined an otherwise great knife for me. Then I found a Native 5 lightweight in the s35vn steel at a good price and I planned to use it as a lighter weight edc compared to my other, larger blade knives. Your disassembly video just burned a hole in my wallet. I had no idea how simple the internals of this knife would be compared to the manix 2.
