Oh my God ...I have learned a lot from this tutorial.....the (mark sharp) for edge split thing.....the solidify material thing....and after I have learned about the solidify material thing, I automatically learn that I can also assign different materials for the bevel too....by just increasing the (-1) value of the material index on the bevel modifier. thanks a lot....

Thanks for reminding me Instant Meshes exists... totally forgot about it thanks to using the likes of Zbrush, Modo and Houdini for years in production, and now I'm back to my Opensource love in, it's totally going to be part of my 3D scanning tool set. Excellent vid as always Chris. many thanks, and keep up the top quality node tutorials.

Excellent tutorial! I might have to do this for my company logo for a 70's themed holiday party! I might import it into Unreal Engine to animate and render, but I am curious if Cycles can render volumetric fog reflections bouncing off the disco ball? Seems like it would be very intensive and take too long to render, but curious if you have any thoughts!
@chrisprenn16 күн бұрын
Glad you enjoy the tutorials! I believe neither Cycles nor EEVEE support volumetrics of reflections

This is awesome. I've seen tutorials on how to do it in Blender with Geo nodes, but it's far too complex for something that should be simple.

As someone that has worked with cut glass, the edge is very sharp, not beveled. Maybe really expensive disco balls have beveled edges, but I doubt it.

Hey Chris, great video! The examples/dataset from github has no UV sphere included. I exported a UV sphere .obj from blender into instant meshes in order to make a traditional (spherical) disco ball, but there were always singularities that seemed impossible to manually resolve. What am I missing? Thanks!
@chrisprenn3 жыл бұрын
Hm I haven't actually tried it with a sphere LOL ... a "round cube" doesn't look like a real disco ball I guess...
@TristanGrimaux2 жыл бұрын
We need this disco ball in geometry nodes!

A brilliant tutorial! Thank you very much for this. At one point I have not understood the procedure. You have created a second material for the sides of the small mirrors. As if by magic, this was assigned to the sides. This did not work for me. This can't be related to the name "Mirror SIDES" - right? Have I made a mistake?
@arianullah62573 жыл бұрын
Have you tried using Autoremesher by Jeremy HU, it produces better results compared to Instant Meshes and is also Open Source

Unfortunatly in the windows version of Instant Meshes there are no models in it ( bunny etc.) it's just empty. Any thoughts on this?
@chrisprenn2 жыл бұрын
Did you download and install the "datasets"? Check the github page for instant meshes
@claudiaatteveld49712 жыл бұрын
@@chrisprenn Thanks I got them now, for new users who aren't used to github it can be easily overlooked that more zips need to be downloaded in order to get the same models as shown in the tool.

I'm trying to use this technique to create some disco-ball text. but the problem is that disco balls' tiles are offset row by row. they are not perfect grids. Any ideas on how to achieve that offset look?
@chrisprenn Жыл бұрын
That is a bit tricky since the mirrors are always based on the underlying topology 🤔

Chris, you should try the free apprentice Houdini version.(if you find the Indie Limited edition too expensive - its like 300 bucks) Im saying this from the standpoint of a person, using Blender, Animation Nodes and Sverchok for years and years. Try out Houdini, there is nothing like it. As a software engineer, you will find yourself REBORN. And dont get me wrong, im a blender fanatic for around 12 years. But Houdini + Blender (as rendering environment) - oh, my....

The Instant Remesh tool is really nice but instead of this tool, you could have used Blender's Remesh function (in sculpting mode). This function is by far not good as Instant Remesh but would be a "Blender only" solution just as a side note.
@chrisprenn3 жыл бұрын
blender's remesh is way not as good as instant meshes for THIS requirement ... prove me wrong ;)
