This reminds me of a time many years back when a motel bought some land, they built a massive motel and after about 6 years they tore it down for what felt like no reason. The building was frequently used (so customers) and it was in excellent condition, even looked very nice. Than they started to tear the building down, folks where confused but the answer was roughly the same as this. The land it was built on sky rocketed in value due to the oil boom in the area, what was once a relatively small town blew up over a few years and since projects start years prior to the build they bought the land for a decent amount. After building, and using it for a few years they realized it was much more profitable to put the land up for sale and wait till someone bought it for a empty lot alone. Which happened, the area was "modernizing" quickly and that lot just so happened to end up on the main strip with many companies building in close proximity (mostly headquarters, and corporate centers). It was a shame to see such a new and relatively high end building get torn down, they must have spent millions to build it, still wonder what kinda money where they offered ... must have been a lot.

I enjoyed the video, thank you. Though it would have been interesting to know the ratio of deconstruction costs to the initial construction costs.

Been watching this from the start.. I work 2 blocks away from 270 Park and they finished removing it about 2 weeks ago. The steel beams they are putting up in it's place is wild! Never seen that formation before. Looking forward to the completion.

Great video! But as always; "the 50-100 year lifespan" is the key problem with modern architecture. Build traditionally and a building will last forever.

"the 50-100 year lifespan" I think it means that the building is: 1)no longer a relevant or historical building; 2) they have better plans for the space that is being used by said building... so it's 'usability and profitability lifespan' and not necessarily 'structural lifespan'.

@@PrimiusLovin This is a complete waste of materials and energy. With the economic crash from the corona virus. The market has fallen out of the commercial and residential real estate market any developer that demolishes a perfectly good high rise to build a taller one will wind up losing his a$$ big time.

I have always wondered how they were gonna deal with old skyscrapers. Like 50-100 years we gonna be having quite the problem with older buildings.
@kansasthunderman14 жыл бұрын
Old skyscrapers are still useful. The pyramids in Egypt are 1000s of years old.
Actually an interesting video, I've always wondered how engineers would go about dimolishing a skyscraper safely without causing too much damage to the local area. Seems like engineers took some inspiration from ship breaking yards when disposing of old ships by means of gutting, dismantling the super structure then breaking down the hull.

Can you do a video solely on the Deustche Bank Building? Its demolition process was unique since it was right next to the WTC site.

Fascinating info as usual, though gotta say, I'm somewhat puzzled by the industry's urge to build even larger towers...other than a generic "because we can, so we must" mindset. I think it would be far more interesting to see things built that could be more beneficial to the public at large. Thanks for posting.

Are you an idiot or something? We need space in urban centres. If you build sideways, you move away from the centre. If you build up, you stay as far away as when you started.

@@tarickpersaud6761 I don't think he was trying to be funny. Pointing out the truth. It's very sad. Infuriating actually, that so many ppl believe the false narrative given them by their overlords. And scary. It's because of that incredibly blind and stupid ppl that we are now facing those exact same ppl, willfully having themselves injected with a deadly bio weapon that is highly contagious, and running all over spreading it to those who know better. Thanks everyone.....👀

An in depth video about the recycling of construction material would be amazing to watch. It could go over what materials are recyclable and reusable, and how that’s done. It could also explore what the standard practices are globally, and compare that to those deconstruction projects that do it best to minimize waste (standard vs. best practices). It could be a great way to learn how to better control the reuse, recycling and demolition of existing projects for architects, clients and contractors. This is something that’s sorely lacking in architectural education, from my experience. In my first internship, we did a lot of single and small multi-family work and it was a personal goal of my boss/ mentor to minimize demolition work when possible to reduce the impact of our projects. But unfortunately, because of our project types and clientele, it did not go much beyond that.

In this era, probably fewer towers will be built - right now say in San Francisco 12.8 mm square feet of office space is collecting dust--current projects and those planned will most likely never happen. Office space needs are counter productive and cost companies too much money--if a meeting space is needed it can be rented.
