This reminds me of a time many years back when a motel bought some land, they built a massive motel and after about 6 years they tore it down for what felt like no reason. The building was frequently used (so customers) and it was in excellent condition, even looked very nice. Than they started to tear the building down, folks where confused but the answer was roughly the same as this. The land it was built on sky rocketed in value due to the oil boom in the area, what was once a relatively small town blew up over a few years and since projects start years prior to the build they bought the land for a decent amount. After building, and using it for a few years they realized it was much more profitable to put the land up for sale and wait till someone bought it for a empty lot alone. Which happened, the area was "modernizing" quickly and that lot just so happened to end up on the main strip with many companies building in close proximity (mostly headquarters, and corporate centers). It was a shame to see such a new and relatively high end building get torn down, they must have spent millions to build it, still wonder what kinda money where they offered ... must have been a lot.

Chicago's Marina City is undoubtedly an iconic structure, but is increasingly inefficient compared to newer technology. Is it worth keeping just for aesthetics? There's a point where a structure is so large and old that maintenance simply can't be kept up anymore -- many modern buildings use some form of metal such as rebar along with concrete, which is what gives them the ability to become so large. But since metal rusts and refurbishing rebar embedded in concrete is difficult, it gives most modern buildings around over a hundred years lifespan before it needs to be torn down and rebuilt. Incredibly historic buildings can stay but with great maintaining costs, while iconic but not necessarily crucial structures can be preserved through scale models, blueprints, and 3D scans of the interior even if the original structure is torn down.

Something similar happened in Paseo de la Reforma Avenue here in Mexico City. It is one of Mexico’s main financial districts, located in a heavily populated area, and a few years ago the strip was surrounded by medium sized 60’s buildings and skyscrapers, but many of them have been demolished or deconstructed to build even bigger, taller and more modern skyscrapers, changing the cityscape a lot in a relative short time 🇲🇽

There's probably a one or two others in the remaining 8 that don't qualify for the statement either if I cared to research any further.
