Hey everyone! I have a video showing how to dome/seal shrink plastic/Shrinky Dinks with different mediums of glazing.
I used:
1. Mod Podge Dimensional Magic
2. Elmer's Clear School Glue
3. Hot Glue (using Hot Glue gun)
4. Floor Varnish
5. Resin (I used UV resin instead of 2 part, but both works).
This is in collaboration with Abi from AtelierLorien and she shows how to dome/seal as well with 4 different mediums.
ABI'S LINKS:
Video: • 4 WAYS TO SEAL SHRINK ...
Channel: / atelierlorien
Doming is a technique to seal your shrink plastic or resin piece (same terminology used) as a finishing effect, most often results in a dome because of how the material adheres to all the edges.
I show the different materials and how they are successful or fails on doming.

There's a few things worth mentioning about Dimensional Magic. The first is that it might yellow over time. I've used the clear Dimensional Magic as well as the glittery silver and glittery gold ones, and between 6 months to a year, the pieces always end up yellowing (also, it seems to yellow even more if you use the glittery gold one). The second thing is that sometimes you have to be careful when you're using it on shrink plastic because it can make the ink run. I used to print designs on the inkjet Shrinky Dinks and I also drew on both the rough & glossy types of Shrinky Dinks with Sharpies and if I used Dimensional Magic to dome the side I drew or printed on, it always made the ink run, even after leaving the ink to dry for a few hours before doming.

I brush a coat of traditional mod page down first, to prevent ink bleed, then use dimensional magic, and then seal again with spray acrylic sealer to hopefully extend the lifespan of the dimensional magic.

Inkjet and Sharpies are both not recommended. You really need to stick to color laser or use an alchol-based pen like Copic markers

With hot glue, you need to leave it heating up for about 5 minutes and you need to get the clearest glue stick you can find at stores, it will work, you just need to make an outline of the shape with hot glue, wait for it to dry, then fill it in! It will work ☺️

I have tried clear nail polish, but the brand of plastic I use requires for you to draw on the matte, course, textured side which means that when I try to dome it the first layer seeps into the cracks and you'll need at least two coats, it looks the best with three or more, so it isn't that good.

It's permanent, it's not going to peel or break off but it may slightly discolor and of course scratch up over time and use. I mean, anything is gonna scratch. I havent made many charms in the last year or so but the ones I have around here still look good! I have also since used UV resin and while it is very pretty and not too hard to use, doming with liquid resin is just not a skill I have and UTEP is much cheaper. I would still recommend it.

Personally I love using embossing powder. It makes it shiny and rock hard. After shrinking my pieces I use a clear embossing ink in a stamper bottle by STAMPENDOUS, then use a spoon to sprinkle a moderate amount of CLEAR ULTRA THICK EMBOSSING POWDER by RANGER on top. I place it on parchment paper and stick it back in my toaster oven at the same temperature I shrunk them at originally. I keep an eye on them and just let it melt completely then remove from the oven and let cool. Mod Pogde does yellow over time and gets gummy if exposed to perfumes or fragrance oils.

Thanks for doing this!!! I was curious on drying times and whether or not the methods were waterproof. I actually got into shrinky dinks and UV resin watching your videos. UV resin and I are not friends :( I do much better with 2 part ICE resin. The UV resin you use, pulls away from the edges for me. I've tried putting more resin and pulling as far as I can before it drips off the side. #struggles I've also had UV resin pop off my charms or turn color. Still trying to figure it out but I'm glad it works for you. My quest continues.... (I love my resin but figuring out how much to mix for projects or trying to do multiples before it cures is proving to be difficult. bleh)
