I have a confession to make, I dye my own roots because I've been going grey since I was 27 years old (half my life). I don't have the time to go to the salon every two weeks so I smudge my roots with a Redken professional colour and 20 vol cream peroxide. I mix 2parts colour to 1 part peroxide in place of the 50:50 and this softens the effect and allows me a bit of leeway as I'm far from a professional colourist. You can get a similar effect using the brilliant Clairol Nice n Easy Root Retouch Kit. They even have a brilliant root brush, which is essential for getting in at the roots.
Here's what I use www.redken.co....
But you can naughtily buy it on EBay too
The bowl is here www.superdrug.c...
And the brush is here www.superdrug.c...
But the easiest option is this one m.boots.com/h5/...
And it comes in a great range of shades with a brush and bowl.
The YS Park Blow Dry Brush is the 50mm here

Choose a colour close to your base/natural colour and leave on for 35/40
Minutes and they will soften the grey without heavy blocks of colour.
