I can totally relate to your story. Artist tells you "Play Track 4". When you play, they like "No DJ. Wrong track. Play another one."

I totally agree, sometimes it's better to avoid certain situations than doing it without the proper organization.

I was asked to dj at a drag queen show last year and I didn't get the music that the performers were using and the order that they were going to be going on until the night of the show. It was kinda stressful at first and I was nervous but I got through it. It was actually a fun night and I got a lot of good comments on my performance.

I did a show on valentine's day and told the person who's running the act and making the line up to artist and told them "hey please tell them to email me now and not at the venue last minute and don't give me cds cause I won't find the files. 1 artist emailed me. I get to the venue 3 hours before music starts to meet with artist and do sound check and the artist comes along feeling the vibes and I introduce myself and tell them I need their music and then they pull out a cd..... Long story short people was able to get to another computer and download the tracks to a USB and I sorted them and then the WiFi goes out and I had to download 1 last set. but the show went smoothly

Rappers can bee a little free spirited in my home town. Nice enough but difficult to work out. I got a USB on the weekend 2 minutes before someone went on to rhyme. This is one minute after another artist got off. I’m djing for all of them. I get a weird unlabeled play list. Half the tracks won’t play through Traktor. I’m routing the computer audio through my sound card mixer on the fly to get it going. Half way through the set he hand his last two songs to some other MCs. Crazy times. No one was there for sound check. It’s crazy. Fun times lol.

+1 on demanding some sort of preparation. I've had a lot of MCs show up with their USBs packed with bullsh*t including school work, pics, random files, badly named folders, and somewhere in there their unordered show files, which they give you minutes before they have to go on. One time I got a guy who had a folder of about 50 songs in all kinds of formats, about 40% were WMAs which can't play on Serato. So his show consisted of him calling out a song, me not being able to play it, him getting mad, then approaching the DJ table to frantically find something we could actually play. Not worth it.

also you want to play the tracks so you know if they are recorded well or pure distortion. nothing more interesting than the "Artists" tour dj that comes in and jacks the input gains in the mixer to pure red led's because they want it louder.... great video here.

i have had similar interaction before with artiste who come on stage with tracks on their phones wanting to unplug my devices to connect their phones.in this case you using a mac laptop probably and you got only two usb ports one going to the mixer and one for the hard drive backup .explaining to them how difficult this is they get angry like you not there to support them.i recommend flash disk with mp3 tracks with that you can plug directly into the cdj usb port and play directly without unplugging.i think more awareness has to be driven towards djs artiste interactions and co operation

Nice advice! There should be more video like this. I am a tour DJ for several artists in Indonesia for five years. Having all the info about all the song, including the back stories is a good thing. There are some artist that I DJ for is very impulsive and indecisive about the tracklist and would change the song list in the middle of a show. They would interact with the crowd and tell a little bit of story about the song that would be played next ( that would serve as a subtle hint for me ) without talking to me first, so I need to be able to guess what is the next song going to be. So I guess if you know the back stories of the songs including the creative process even you are not the producer is a plus point. :)

@@djanunnaki6622 cue points are more than enough for me. Though it would be seldom for doing that. I usually have cue points in every part of the songs.

As a british DJ from the 90s who plays house, techno and back in the day jungle and breaks. The difference in respect for an MC is so far from the hip hop world, we would turn the mic down on MCs at times and they were really not important, i noticed an american upload a drum n bass event from over here and they titled it MC GQ feat DJ Nicky Blackmarket, it made me laugh as Nicky Blackmarket is a God and nobody gives a F' about GQ ! But in the rap scene i could barely name one DJ apart from the obvious like Primo and Mr C and thats just because im a huge Biggie fan! I couldnt name a Westcoast one apart from Quik and thats only because i think he had knowledege of Bigs murder and i kind of rate myself as a golden era 90s hip hop enthusiast!

Thanks for this video! Excellent Advice! and very timely since I'm about to DJ for my first artist. This approach you speak of is going to definitely help me a lot. In my opinion it is not worth taking a gig if the artist or booking agent is not organized. I'm putting myself in a compromising position and disrespecting myself and any reputation because of their issues. Just not worth the money!

Yeah its VERY annoying when I HAVE to play for an artist "On Spot" 15mins before they go on stage... they come with a flashdrive play "this this this".. It pisses me off..
