Great video. I really enjoyed watching it. I am also getting 1x conversion on my giant revolt gravel bike which current has 32x48 praxis alba crank & 11-34casette. I have ordered it from shimano to install GRX components that includes the crank set as well as the other parts to make it a 40t x 11-42t. However, after watching your video I came to realise that as far as crank is concerned ordering just a 40T ring from praxis would have been fine.....oopps too late now🤭 I have one question to you and this is to understand if you're facing this small issue that I have (may be not an issue tough!)? Subsequently with the new setup will this issue be continued? Issue: when I turn the pedals backwards to clean the chain, the chain tends to come off from the front chain ring side. When I examined it I have noticed that the front ring is positioned inward as opposed to casette( gear 11 is slightly offsite). In other words, when my bike is on highest gears (front and back), the chain is drawing a diagonal line, hence causing the chain come off whem turning backwards. Actually chain ring is in straight line with the 3rd highest gear of the cassette. In order to avoid that I have put a spacer to bulge the chain ring outwards. Now it doesn't come off but the tooth of chain ring slightly rubbing against the chain from inside. Dealer says it is normal but it is just annoying.

Hey Tanju. Thanks for the positive feed back, glad you enjoyed it. Sounds like an exciting conversion, I’m too hoping to go to an 11speed setup in the not too distant future with 40t up front and 11-42 at the back. Once you got to a 1x set up the issue of loosing your chain up front wont happen. If you look carefully at your double chain rings you’ll notice that there are some low teeth than aid shifting. These shift teeth are the ones causing you chain derailment issues whilst back peddling. Once your get a single ring with a narrow wide style chainring there’s no shifting teeth so you should be good.

Hi Morag, depends on the hills in your local area and how steep they are and how fast you want to go before you spin out. I’ve switched it up recently up for. Hydraulic 11 speed GRX shifters and and added a 11-42 XT cassette. I find it great for the steep rolling Cotswold hills with a top end spin out at around 50-55kph. Could use a lower climbing gear for the super steep hills in Cornwall still😂

This video is exactly what I’ve been looking for! How did you choose the new ring on the front? The teeth choices have me really confused on what I should get? Am I right is saying you’ve matched the cassette’s biggest ring to the front ring? That’s the one to one ratio is it?
@MozOnBikes3 жыл бұрын
It’s tricky, really depends on your local terrain and how you’re using the bike. Calculate the drive ratio by taking the front chainring teeth and dividing them by the teeth on the cassette. So as an example I’ve got a 40t chainring and the lowest ratio on the cassette is also a 40t giving me a 1:1 ratio. Have a look at your bike as it is, calculate the current lowest ratio you need for climbing you local terrain and make a selection of rear cassettes and chainrings from that. Saying that a 40 or 42 with an 11-40 or 11-42 cassette is a popular set up. Decent enough speed and low ratio for climbing.

I just got a new Checkpoint ALR 4, 2021. It’s a 2x10, GRX 400. I really wanted a 1x, but this was available and affordable in a scarce market. I also really liked the fit and ride of it. What parts would I need to upgrade to a 1x system for it?
@MozOnBikes3 жыл бұрын
Well your question is a little too open ended to answer accurately.It’s going to depend on the specifics options fitted to your bike as standard, what you want to spend and the terrain your planning on riding. For a basic 1x conversion all you really need is to ditch the double chainrings and front derailleur for a narrow wide tooth profile single chain. But at this point you may want to consider a wider range cassette as switching to a single chainring will limit your climbing and your top speed gears. Most single ring set ups don’t mind loosing the top speed gearing a little, but favour a low range gear for climbing especially on gravel bikes. So understanding your local terrain you ride and the gear ratios needed to climb is important. This then can produces a problem that it’s likely that your rear derailleur is not designed to be used with a wide range cassette and might not be able to operate. At this stage you need to start considering a new rear mech or alternative options like wolftooths road link to adapt the rear derailleur. See it’s a little complex for a strait forward answer.

@@MozOnBikes if I run the same grx 400 2x10, and I am totally happy with the large chainring and not using the smaller one, do you think removing just the smaller chainring and front derailleur will work? I have a clutch on my rear derailleur as well. And btw, how much weight your bike lost when moved to 1x from 2x?
@MozOnBikes2 жыл бұрын
It won’t work well, the outer chainring has profiled teeth for making shifting easy, you’ll find your chain dropping. You defo need to buy a specific 1x chainring. The weight loss isn’t huge, but that mostly due to a larger range cassette weighing more.

hi man thanks so much for the video ...i wanna ask you. : I didn't see you using chain catcher in the crank , is it not necessary ?? ....and is it possible to do that with 8 speed claris groupset ....i also got so many climbs in my town
@MozOnBikes27 күн бұрын
It depends on the setup, with a narrow wide chainring and the clutch type rear mech its really unlikely to come off. However without the clutch its can be a bit temperamental especially if you tend to back pedal at traffic lights or junctions for example, on older setups pre GRX rear mechs with just a narrow wide id occasionally drop the chain. Claris will be a tricky conversion, id keep as many easy gears as possible to tackle the climbs.

Moz, are you going to change cranks to carbon? What is the praxxis spindle dimentions?
@MozOnBikes4 жыл бұрын
Probs won’t go carbon. I’ve got a SRAM force chainset already and I’m not super stocked with it. Wave washers and a plastic pre load adjuster are a bit of a rubbish way of pre-loading the bb bearings. I really like the Shimano system, but the GRX chainset leaves me a little cold for it price point, that’s and the 40t min chainring put me off a little. At the moment I’m tempted to get an XT chainset with a gravel size spiderless chainring or maybe look at the Hope chainset. Not sure on the praxis spindle off the top of my head, it’s a weird one as it has (I think) a 30mm on the drive side and a 28mm on the non drive side. I’ll keep running the praxis until the spring. Hoping to post an update on the bike soon as it’s changed a bit, just need some nice weekend weather to go for a ride and film it.

Are you running the 810 or 812 rear mech? They claim the 810 is only good to a 34t max cog and the 812 is good to a 42t. But I hear those are conservative numbers...

812 for me. I’ve heard similar thing, especially regarding the 810, there are several other videos with it working with an 11-40. Also seen some stuff with the 812 working up to 11-46 but that’s much thinner on the info front. Take it all with a pinch of salt as there are other considerations to take account for also.

Hi Tommy, with that rear derailleur the max you can go up to is a 36t. With a 42 up front could be a bit of a big gear for climbing up the hills, but it’s all going to depend on you terrain if that’s ok.

Hi, I have just purchased a Praxis Works Wide Range 10 Speed Cassette 11-40. Will this go straight on my road bike ? ATM I have a SRAM Force 12-28 (10 Speed) installed
@MozOnBikes3 жыл бұрын
I’m not 100% sure as I have no experience with sram 10 speed road, but I don’t think it’ll work. I tried something similar about 5 years ago with 10 speed 105. There’s 2 possible issue. First is that you’ll find is that the top jockey wheel won’t sweep down far enough to clear the larger gears of the cassette like the 40t. Good news is that there’s a work around for this, you can use a little rear derailleur extender like the wolf tooth road link. I made a video on this I’ll link it here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYilnGWbgbVlars Second issue depends on what type of chainset and gear you’re planning to run. What you might find is that with traditional road rear derailleur they are unable to take up all the extra chain slack from a wide range cassette and a double front chainring set up. You’ll have too much chain to run small small or not enough to run big big chainrings. There’s not to many work around for this other than to go for a single chainring or 2 chainrings with a limited jump in size. SRAM should publish the chain slack capacity or your rear derailleur somewhere on their website and you can calculate how far off you are.
@damienbaker39553 жыл бұрын
@@MozOnBikes Many thanks for taking the time to reply, I plan to use a rear derailleur extender and run a narrow wide front 42 or 40 chainring, its pretty flat where I live. Do you think this will be OK ? Also, would the Praxis 11-40 cassette be a direct swap for my existing cassette ? - i.e any work arounds required, specialist shims or spacers ??
@MozOnBikes3 жыл бұрын
Ahh ok cool, yeah with a single ring it should work pretty good. Ideally you’d have a clutch type rear mech but I ran mine without for quite a few years with only a very occasional case of the chain coming off, and that seemed to happen mostly when accidentally back pedalling in a low ratio. You should be good. Again it depends on your freehub on your wheels. A few years back they increased the width of the standard hyper glide free hub when they went to road 11 speed. It shouldn’t be too much to worry about though as you can just place a 1.85mm spacer inbetween the cassette and free hub. Your cassette may well have came with one.

@MozOnBikes3 жыл бұрын
I think you should be fine with a 135mm, 135 and 142 should have the same chainline if I remember correct. 142 was an evolution from mountain bike through axles just to have little cupping features in the frame to stop the wheel falling past the axle hole. 50mm chainline does sound wide, I think the GRX chain sets are 47.5 and sram is right in the middle of the rings at 45.5. There is a minimum axle to crank distance that Shimano recommends, if yours is shorter and with the 50mm chainline that could be the problem, the chain can’t take the angle needed at the extreme range of the cassette.
