I've made some stuff very similar... When burning, go with the grain, and it seems to make it less splotchy... I use boiled linseed oil instead of mineral oil.

I’ll have to start burning with the grain and see if it makes a difference and I don’t like using linseed oil because I’ve heard it starts a lot of shop fires

Loved it. I've seen million videos. This is one of the best videos I've seen. The details explained and do's and don'ts and everything. I was wondering if you can tell that mineral oil you used and what brand the was was.

Thank you so much! Means a lot to hear that you enjoyed my content I really appreciate that. I’m pretty sure all mineral oil is the same to be honest the brand I used in the video is called “Brandon bespoke” it’s a 500ml bottle on Amazon for £13.99 but I’m pretty sure they are all the same and the bees wax pellets I got to make the mixture is from “mouldmaster” but again any raw bees wax pellets should give the same results hope you found this helpful!

It’s a nice effect just make sure the material your using isn’t to thin or it can crack and bend

@@barrovianmade i'm done. Finished with linseed oil. did a few coats diluted with mineral spirits working my way up to full oil. Actually wondering if i should put anything to protect it other than that. Any thoughts?
@barrovianmade

Could use a ceramic coating like n3 nano bumps up the sheen and adds a tough layer of protection

could you stain and seal if you wanted to for this type of table?
@barrovianmade

I don’t see why not best thing to do is try a test piece on a scrap but of wood

Have you ever tried staining it first, say with a black color, then going over with the torch? I wonder how that would look.
@barrovianmade
@barrovianmade 11 ай бұрын
Haven’t tried that yet but I have recently been using clothing dye as a stain it works a treat! Looks similar to the burn finish

So using the clothing dye without burning?

Hay! Thanks for the spark plug tip, going to take mine out... I'm doing skirting with burnt pallet wood, haven't started yet. But I'm also going to add UV paint in between the light sections. Hope it works, it's for a retro room 1980-2005 era. I have no idea what to seal it with yet 🤔
@barrovianmade

Yeah for the type of burner I have it burns a lot hotter without the spark plug in works a treat! And that sounds like a great idea I would probably just use a Matt durable lacquer to seal it

@barrovianmade Awesome 👌 thanks. I'm only concerned about a reaction with the acrylic paint with sealer. Hopefully be, nice one. 🤠👍

If I’m ever concerned about something I always dig into my scrap pile and do a test piece maybe make a few quick coasters and see how they turn out!

@barrovianmade Good shout, think I will do this and try different thickness of uv paint. As heard it can drastically change the effect. Thankyou! 🤠👊🏻

wow .... great look , what is your view & advice on a epoxy resin finish ?
@barrovianmade
@barrovianmade 8 ай бұрын
I’ve always wanted to try an epoxy resin flood coat but I have a very dusty workshop so I’d have to sand it back constantly. I think it looks nice but you do loose the texture of the wood and depending on what epoxy you use they can pick up scratches a lot easier so if you do a flood coat with epoxy I’d go over the top with a ceramic coating a few times to add more protection

Great work, what do you think about adding the blue or red die to the finished Shou Sugi? I bought a bottle to do a pine work bench I have. I was also going to use the torch connected to a propane tank as it gives a pretty good flame. Curious your thoughts.
@barrovianmade
@barrovianmade Жыл бұрын
I think the red could be interesting could almost give the illusion that Its still smouldering but I’d recommend doing a test piece on a scrap bit of wood before committing to finishing a whole table with it

What did you call the thing you recommens removing from the torch? Spa plug? Could you tell me the function of this. Because i have the exact problem, you says it will resolve, but i am abit unsure what its meant to do.. thanks for video!

@barrovianmade 11 ай бұрын
I just called it the spark plug I don’t know what the real name is if you do remove it though you will have to use a lighter to light the torch but mine melted and ruined my workpiece so now I rip them out and light the torch with a lighter makes the torch burn hotter too. Might be different for your burner my mind was 3 screws I had to unscrew and a wire I had to cut then it just comes out

I can’t see why not! As long as it’s a clear finish so you can still see everything it should be fine. if your really on the fence about it try do a test piece to see how it looks
