How to do a pellet to bore test on your air gun barrel !

Mike's 'P2B test' is THE best accuracy predictor I ever heard of! It seems obvious now, but it would have been years before that lightbulb clicked on for me. I thought for sure Mike was a retired shop teacher because he is a fantastic airgun shop teacher here on KZbin.

We’ve spoken before. You gave me some great advice on a Hatsan 95 .I’m in Bucks County. Far enough away from Cheltenham , Olney, and Germantown ( or almost anywhere in city limits ) to be safe.

@@lucabrasi5070 Iam so glad to be in Montana compared to where I been in the past. thing about Bucks county as I remember is getting there and getting out depending on where you lived like Churchville, ivy land or even new hope new town lang horn, Trevose etc if you have to travel out then come back thru traffic at rush hour etc street road and I 95 what a mess,

Great video Mike. The first Hatsan 95 22 that I got from Pyramid Air, shot all over the place and only got 17 FPE with CPHP 14.3. The barrel was so out of wack that the breach seal fell out. Then I did the pellet to boar test, soon as the pellet passed the breech block, the pellet fell the rest of the way through the barrel. The choke was barely noticeable. Sent that one back and got a 2nd one. Cleaned the barrel thoroughly right away, did another pellet to boar test, not perfect but passable. This rifle developed 20 FPE with the same pellets. This was an accurate one, getting dime sized groups out to 25 yards. Of course the second one was not perfect, with a scratch on top of the barrel and the breach was gouged, and the breach port nut was lose. Overall I really like the second Hatsan 95 22 and have taken 2 cottontail's 🐇🐇 with it this this fall 🍂🍁🙂👍.

Yeah that hatsan 95 if you get one that's accurate can dish out some power for its size , I really like the hatsan 95

Boss please tell me 1 thing .. i have hatsan nova qe it isnt a good accurate pcp it shots 1 inch groups at 50 some time 1.5 inches .. its not consistant ... where i do live i dont have any jb bore paste but i have some metal polish ... so can it be possibke to use one of them for smooth bore and get accuracy for my pcp..? Mine isnt have a smooth bore. .. please guide me what should i do .. regards.. ❤

I would add that some pellet head sizes run a little small and others a little larger depending on the brand and type. Some pellets in the tin may be smaller head size than normal because it's just a bad pellet, some could be oversize. I would say it's best to test with a variety of types and test 3-4 pellets from the tin to be sure you have a barrel problem. Some brands and styles of pellets may all fit loose in the barrel. This also made me think of FX Smooth Twist barrels that have no rifling, but use a twist only at the end of the barrel like a choke to give the pellet a spin as it leaves the barrel. If it works for FX Smooth Twist why would the choke at the end of a rifled barrel not do the same? A choked barrel helps compensate for pellets that run a slightly smaller head size and in theory should make a gun a bit less pellet picky. The head of the pellet should engage the rifling and the skirt should form out to make an air tight seal. We know even a lower powered break barrel build up a very sudden high pressure, enough to detonate grease or oils. This is depending on the thickness and hardness of the skirt along with pellet design as to how much a skirt will expand and seal in the barrel. I could see a pellet not sealing if the barrel gets loose midway down and the pressure isn't enough to expand the skirt out at that point. Myself i would suggest cleaning, then a break in and accuracy test with a variety of pellets known to perform well like JSB Exact Diablos or H&N FFT. Even Crosman premiere hollowpoints. If none of these will do a quarter size group at 25 yards then I would start checking the FPS and deviation. Then a barrel test. This would assume stock screws have been checked and the shooter knows how to shoot a springer. I've seen people find problems and create that really weren't problems if the testing is done wrong.

@user-fz8fy4zl1c I was mainly talking about if someone tested a barrel with a pellet that's fits loose it could make you think you had a bad barrel. Trying different head sizes is really to fine tune to get the best groups, A barrel that's not a uniform size all the way down can cause issues.

Iam planning to do this test but with a twist since i dont have a rod, i will try to make a hole in the pellet with a needle and then with yarn or fishing line iamgoing to pull the pellet from the muzzle side. Now that since my first air rifle havent arrived yet id be thankful for any suggestions to improve my plan.

I would just wait and buy a skinny rod from ace or true value hardware. the rod is your feeler gauge and when you put your pellet in the breech use a skinny separate tool to push it into the bore just past the opening then use the skinny rod and go slow and read what is going on between the pellet and the bore/ usually the block area is to tight but see if the pellet has bore contact or is hoppy or smooth or what ever

While this video is informative. It upsets me… I end up spending thousands of dollars on my air rifle…. Then if I do this test and find the barrel bad. Now I gotta get a new barrel? What a rip off.

Thousands of dollars?? what did you buy? Knowledge is everything typically high end rifles are good quality and pcp are generally a lot more accurate due to no recoil but typically even a Weihrauch can have a mediocre pellet to bore fit but at least its not a over sized bore like this hatsan had and those weihrauch springers are low powered so the choke on them saves the day
