Jason, I'm a long time international speaker who's talks are popular across several cultures from Istanbul to Stuttgart to A Caruna, Spain. It is remarkable that you have outlined just about how I open my talks. In addition, I first engage the audience by looking at them, smiling (which you could use) and talking directly to them. With certain cultures I discovered that they need special permission to engage with you, otherwise they will not ask their questions or otherwise interact. So I might spend a few moments chatting with them and asking them questions. In one culture I actually divide the audience in two and see which side can yell "uno, dos, Tres" the loudest. Seriously. If you are speaking with an audience who's second language is English and you're speaking in English...speak slowly, have modest goals and take the time to give them permission to engage. Thank you very much for your concise and inspiring talk above.

I love this! I had a presentation for class, and kept getting the same platitudes "everyone goes through speech anxiety." Right... has everyone been laughed out of a classroom in grade school? Anyway, fast forward to college, where I must give a presentation for my mid-term (and my upcoming final.) I watched this, rewrote my opener and practiced voice inflection to apply the information. I got 100% on the midterm. That's a significantly higher grade than I ever attained in an actual speech class. A more important point, is that I felt like I finally accomplished speaking in front of a group without having a near nervous breakdown. I felt confident. And to speak to the effectiveness and retained information itself, with my final fast approaching, I found myself seeking this exact video, and feel I should send the link to my partner. Thank you!

Very helpful video, and clever approach -- using your own opener to demonstrate and reinforce your key points. I can't tell you how many times I've sat in front of a teacher who fails to demonstrate the skill he/she is trying to teach. You've both explained and demonstrated the 5 simple steps and left me with a clear picture of how to apply your recommendations in my own presentations -- all in less than 10 minutes. Well done!

True! Mastering a presentation opener is so important. I’ve seen firsthand how a strong start captivates the audience right away. Taking that initial stand with confidence and setting up a clear, engaging hook makes all the difference. I like Jason's point on connecting emotionally with the audience, especially by giving them something they want-whether it’s happiness, success, or freedom. Programs like the Sense of Humor Improvement Program by Habit10x even help presenters add humor in just the right way. Remember, with practice, each presentation feels smoother and more impactful!

I then educate them they actually have ONE year experience, not 15. Your HOOK and the bullet points are great ideas

I am no expert in presentation and but i use this small technique to conquer my fear and it worked. I fool my brain thinking like this " I am presenting in front of my friends and family members ( who you know well) , i don't care whether i am not perfect or i do mistakes or my idea are stupid etc. i just explain what i know " . instead of thinking " i am presenting in front of audience and panel members who will kill me if i am not perfect or any mistakes in my Ideas etc." fooling your brain that u r presenting in front your friends causes your brain to relax not worry about result or outcomes of your Idea . Even if there is you can rectify it later. Hope this works.
