This is a quick and easy way of doing a honey bee split. whether you use the walk away method , a queen cell, a virgin queen, or a mated Queen, all of these will work when doing the splits. it's simple and easy, the beginner beekeeper all the way to the advanced beekeeper can do this method.

Thank you for showing the New Beekeepers tips on rearing Bees, I am not a New Beekeeper but when I started it was hard to find any Old Beekeeper to tell you anything. We need people like you to help those who are into Beekeeping. Thanks for your excellent videos. I love watching & picking up some nuggets & trying them in my yard. Thanks, Again & God Bless.

Enjoyed the video. I understand completely about doing things one handed. One thing I wanted to note as someone who has been researching the walk away splits extensively in the last couple months and has had my first success doing one in the last week, though. You moved the frames but you did not tell the audience what was in the frames. The first one you put in the 5 frame nuc looked to be mostly capped brood, which obviously cannot make a queen. So just for informational purposes and I guess Beekeeping for Dummies, it would probably be a good idea to note that there must be eggs or very young larva available in order for the bees to make a new queen. Otherwise, some might think you just move a frame and it makes a new colony on its own. Other than that little tidbit, I thought it was great and you do seem quite skilled at one handing it!

@lawrenceapiary4765

Once the brood is capped, the larva cannot be fed more royal jelly and enters the pupa stage, therefore it cannot become a queen. The best to make a queen with is the eggs or larva no more than three days old.

i agree the eggs want the dots not the comma's nor rice shape
@lawrenceapiary4765
@lawrenceapiary4765 6 жыл бұрын
When people say rice shape they are talking about eggs. If you could magnify them and look at them you would see that they do resemble very tiny grains of rice. But also very difficult to spot, it does look a lot like a dot in the bottom of the cell (especially on new comb).

@@ponolovefarms3926 very easy to spot! look for the crown, then look at other bees moving out of her way and facing her 9 times out of 10 but then also look at the elongated body with a slight point to the bum area. Dependant on the breed they can be very easy to spot or very hard and dependant on the age of the queen. If they are young and not fertilised than can be quite hard to spot or if they are about to split she would lose weigh to fly then would be harder to spot otherwise quite easy :)

David, thanks for another great instructional video. Couldn't find the, walk away, video you mentioned, so I'll ask here. If you make a walk away split once night temps are above 30° but there are no flowers available for feeding. Can pollen patties and sugar water carry the hive until the bloom time? Also, how early in the season do you start your walk away splits before say the dandelions start blooming. Thanks

I just did my first walk away split. How soon until I can peek in to see if they have made an emergency queen cell? Also, should I feed any sugar water? I did my split from a hive with two deep hive bodies, located the queen in the top hive body, I moved the queen into the bottom and left the bottom hive body in original location and took two frames of packed brood and nurse bees and swapped them into the top hive bodyand set it about 10 feet away. hit me with suggestions and anything I should have done different.

I went back on 5/15/20, and one of the Nucs was completely empty, not one Bee in it. The Frame of Brood was just like I left it. The other Nuc had one handful of Bees in it, that was it.
