Any additional tips you have for mastering in your DAW ?

I think you are one of the best and most honest people in this industry. There are a lot of unspoken "secrets" that are taboo. I learned 2 things I didn't know from this video. Thank you very much. Congratulations !!!

Hi. I have a question: your reference tracks routing goes out directly to the Stereo out; does not this fact has affect on the levels of the stereo out?

Nice mastering chain, i also followed Ian Shepherd series in that Mastering Essentials on Sound on Sound :) and i am starting to apply some of his techniques also. I think maybe you could try some tape saturation in the beginning of the chain like Kramer Tape stereo (waves) or even Magneto 2 directly from the channel strip, in my side works well

Good tip! I usually get my analog goodness from my analog inserts, they tend to control the transients a bit and get some initial glue happening. But for a more audible effect I will definitely checkout those tape plugins you're suggesting as well. I do have a tape plugin on the mix bus of my own mixes usually, but for this mix there probably wasn't one during the mixing phase.

Question: What is the best practice to lengthen or add a silent leader when the project has already been processed with little or no leader and includes track and group automation?

Hi! For mastering I have created a folder in my hdd and put there all the mastering projects. I do in this way: export my mixed project converting it in WAV and then I open another project and import the WAV file and begin to master it by adding the plugins chain in stereo bus. Is it a right way to proceed?
@LanewoodStudios

Sure if it works fine for you. I would just make sure that all audio files of a Cubase project are under the Cubase folder for that project.

Around 15:30 to 15:39 while you're showing the Pro-MB, there is a narrow spike around 18 kHz that is around - 6 dB in level (not good - you should always find such tracks and low pass such high pitch noise which could be from a single coil guitar or some other type of electro magnetic interference). Also, when you stop the music, it looks like there's some type of dithering noise going through your Pro-MB. That is odd because your dithering plugin is in the bottom slot - last in the chain as it should be. HTH, all the best. P,S. - Thank you for the informative, well done KKlip 3.5 video.

Thanks for the tips. I think the noise is just from my analog EQ and compressor which are inserted before the Pro-MB.
@stevecarrAB
@stevecarrAB Жыл бұрын
@@LanewoodStudios maybe the hiss (looks like dither) is normal analog noise, but that -6 dB, 18 kHz spike might agitate the dogs in the neighborhood : - )

@@stevecarrAB yeah the spike is something else probably. Will have to check that.

This guide has confirmed for me that i need to pay for a sit in mastering session or I'm never going to fully appreciate what's going on.

It's always interesting to be at a mastering session. Don't necessarily expect to come away with a lot of knowledge though, because the mastering engineer usually just does his thing and will maybe ask you for your input or whether you have remarks. If you want to learn to do mastering yourself it might be better to do a course, like the one I'm referring to.

Did you just insert the analog Eq/Compressor or did you made any settings on them? I have been using Perception for a couple of years now and its one of my best investments on plugins.
@LanewoodStudios
@LanewoodStudios 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I just inserted these devices as an external plugin. I used the same settings on the devices as I use on the mixbus on these devices when I use them in a mix. I have two separate videos about that actually, one for how you can use external effects/plugins in Cubase, and one on what devices/plugins I put on my mix bus when I start a mix :). And indeed, Perception works great, and the new version is even better/more simple to use.

Why not use the VU meters in the control room in cubase?
@LanewoodStudios
@LanewoodStudios 3 жыл бұрын
As far as I know there are no real VU meters in Cubase. Just digital peak and loudness meters. And not sure if you can calibrate those like the VUMT meter. But I’ll have another look. Would definitely be a good option if Cubase has something similar out of the box.
