How to do a Trim Reset on Minn Kota Ulterra

If your Ulterra or Riptide Ulterra motor does not rotate into the horizontal position when stowing, or the vertical position when deploying at the appropriate time, you may need to do a Trim Reset.
During the stow sequence, the motor lower unit should come straight up and begin to rotate into the horizontal position when the lower unit is about twelve 12 to 13 inches below the aluminum base extrusion. During the deploy sequence, the motor lower unit should extend about 5 to 6 inches out from the steering housing and then begin to rotate into the vertical position.
This video shows you how to conduct a Trim Reset on your Minn Kota Ulterra or Riptide Ulterra. This process will reset the motor trim point and allow for proper stow of the motor.

My Ulterra 80 will shut off in auto pilot. Have to raise it lower it spin head manually til it starts working again. Does thia a lot.

My hand set remote doesn’t have the battery display come up at all, and when I turn the trolling motor it doesn’t stay on. Batteries from the charger says they are fully charged. Please help, I don’t know what’s going on.

Craig Turek can you please help with this Spot Lock problem? I've installed the iPilot Link app, paired the Ulterra to the puck, did a sensor calibration with 2 circles in the boat, and did an offset calibration. I've performed this sequence in dead calm, gently breeze and current and 25MPH breeze all with the same result. Spot lock will hold the GPS spot BUT with violent adjustments. The Ulterra will rev to a 10 setting to port which over corrects causing a rev to 10 to starboard. If you're not paying attention, it would throw you out of the boat. It repeats this high speed over correction regardless of conditions. Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem? Thank you in advance.

Jon, What is your boat scale set at? You will need to reduce your boat scale until you are at the minimum setting of - 2 or until the boat behavior is acceptable. Is the Auto Pilot acting correctly? Also, make sure that your Heading Sensor isn't mounted near any large ferrous (steel) matierials. Thanks.

Minn Kota Tutorials If lower unit cannot make contact with collar during a trim reset, will this still work? My bow is in the way preventing contact.

Aj - Thank you for contacting us. When you perform the Trim Reset procedure, your motor will steer itself into the park position and then lift the motor up towards the bottom of the mount. If during that process the lower unit or anything gets caught up on something or makes contact to your bow, it will stop the Trim Reset from working and it would not complete the procedure.

Please help me. My motor tried to stow backwards like instead of the prob facing left it faces right now and when I do a trim reset it resets it to the wrong side. It’s never done this before is there any way I can fix this? I try to turn the motor off and manually turn it to the right side and it will not even let me pull it up only deploy it. Then it will go to the wrong side again when I push stow. I cannot find any info about this on the internet

Bailey, Can you please provide us a serial off the Ulterra. What you will need to do is a Trim Reset and the motor must be in the deployed position (straight up and down). You will turn the power off, turn the power on and as soon as you see the green light come on count 3 seconds (not to fast). You will then push the power button 3 times with in 2 seconds (really fast). The motor should rise up hit the bracket and then go down 6 inches and stop. The turn the power back off and physically grab the shaft and turn the lower unit so that it is in the Park position. Once you have done all of the above turn the motor on and hit stow. If the motor will not stow at that point you would have to get the motor into an Authorized Minn Kota Service Center and if within warranty provide them a copy of your proof of purchase. Can you tell me what's the difference between this trim rest procedure and the trim reset procedure on user manual? "Reset Procedure must be performed. (Also see Trim/Stow Reset Procedure) To do this the motor MUST be in the deployed position, with the motor and shaft assembly vertical and the latch pin in the steering housing engaged into the aluminum base extrusion catches. Then, with the voltage appropriate for the motor being serviced supplied to the motor, press and release the Power button. The green system ready LED should be displayed, wait three (3) seconds then press and release the Power button three (3) times in quick succession within a two (2) second time period. The motor lower unit and shaft assembly should then come straight up until the motor belt collar contacts the underside of the steering housing, pause, and then extend back out about six (6) inches from the steering housing. This resets the trim module counter and completes this procedure"

Hi, The wording in the Ulterra manual is as follows, but is otherwise the same process as what you have quoted. a. Locate the Indicator Panel at the base of the Mount. b. Press and hold the Power Button located on the Indicator Panel to turn the motor off. Make sure that the motor is off by checking that the green LED light next to the System Ready Indicator is off. c. Press the Power Button until the green LED illuminates and the motor is turned on. d. Wait 3 seconds. e. Press the Power Button 3 times consecutively within a 2 second period. f. The red and green LEDs will flash continuously and the Ulterra will go through the following automated sequence: • The motor will position itself into the proper orientation. • The motor will automatically trim up to the Mount and then trim down approximately 6 inches. • The flashing red LED next to the System Ready Indicator will turn off, and the flashing green LED next to the Status Indicator will become solid green. If trim reset was unsuccessful with the motor deployed that may indicate there is insufficient power to the motor to run the trim motor or possibly some mechanical failure of the trim motor. We would advise first confirming there are no power issues to the motor buy load testing your batteries and thoroughly checking the wiring to the motor for any connection issues. If power can be ruled out we would recommend the unit be diagnosed and repaired as needed by an authorized service provider.
