As someone who has been boxing for over 10 years (and competed at a high level) and a blue belt in Brazilian Jui Jitsu, I can tell you now, if you try to punch someone's face with the back of your hand, you could cause some serious damage to your hand. If you are going for that position, you could just go for the haymaker punch. You would aim at the opponent's mouth or chin and that would do the job.

Sure, if you hit the forehead, good chance to break your metacarpus 😨
@harumori15585 жыл бұрын
I agree with this comment entirely. While I find Azu's practical-aikido approach refreshing and a step in the right direction for the art, that punch is just a mistake. It is especially perplexing to see it coming from an aikidoka, as there are several actual aikido techniques that can be attempted from that position instead of that back-of-the-hand punch.
@FellVoice5 жыл бұрын
I was just about to make this reply. Sure if you're going to hit with that technique, don't use the back of your hand, use bottom/pinky or top/thumb side to do the damage depending on your optimal angle.
@steelroc785 жыл бұрын
As someone with about 8 years of boxing training, 3 years of kickboxing training and 3 years of Aiki-jujitsu training I entirely agree with this comment. A haymaker would be best and a Bas Rutten style palm strike might even be effective. I am no karate practitioner, but a Haito strike thrown in the wide arcing form Asu demonstrate might also work, but the backfist thrown in this manner is dangerous, for I see a back fist better suited for other techniques. To conclude one should also strengthen their back fist through proper conditioning before attempting to use it.
@azuspointofview51105 жыл бұрын
You are right and I fully agree. I have used this punch and it worked, I did have my attacker's teeth marks in my hand and my hand was bleeding, but it got me out of a very sticky situation. I should have mentioned this in the video.
@susanohara42743 жыл бұрын
Both O'sensei and Shioda sensei said that Atemi (attacking the vital points of the body) is 70% of Aikido. The open hand is often used to hit and deflect blows. The handblade (tegatana) consists of the edge of the hand and the forearm. Instead of a straight line punch, you can use the palm heel. Hitting the jaw, like an uppercut with palm heel, is known as Shomen Ate in Tomiki Aikido.

My primary art is karate (36 years) and I also have been training in aikido for about 9 years. It is refreshing to see aikido taught in realistic, real life applications. Good concepts. But I do have one recommendation based on law enforcement experience (25 years) and my karate experience. That is never try to focus your impact with the ring finger and little finger knuckles. I have had numerous officers break the bones in those fingers when incorrectly punching combative prisoners to try and gain compliance and stop the altercation. Ask any hard hitting top instructor in the Japan Karate Association or any other karate association and they will tell you that you should strike with proper wrist alignment and the knuckles of the largest fingers. If my officers had done this as they were trained, they would not have broken their hands and been placed on light duty until they healed.

cookiethiefcooper you beat me to it lol. Punching with the small fingers is a sure fire way of breaking your hand, especially in a high adrenaline situation.

So for my dojo, we use a similar lunching style as ninjitsu, where you don’t use a regular punch position but more like the second joint in the middle finger in a still regular lunch for all other fingers, we use this for a more stabbing technique instead of power, and from first hand experience, striking in areas like kidneys, liver, etc it hurts so much more like this way instead

Thank you for the videos, I am a subscriber. One question please...when the videos reference a punch to the solar plexus, it looks like you are aiming between the lower pecs, more on the sternum rather than the soft tissue below the sternum. Is that where we should aim a solar plexus punch, fist to sternum? Or fist just below the sternum? Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us so openly!

The best punch is the one you don't throw because you are smart enough to cool the situation or because you run away, but in the unfortunate case you have to strike someone do it only with the first two knuckles, the third and fourth will brake and give you the boxer's fracture. Aim for the solar plexus, throat, knees, eyes, kidney and obviously balls. In the street there is no martial code of honor.
@zenlot135 жыл бұрын
Before the advent of modern boxing gloves boxers only punched with the last three knuckles. Same thing with karate, before karate modernized it was the last three knuckles. When you aim with the front two knuckles you hyperextend your wrist tendon and over time can cause it to tear

Reason why you need to avoid hiting with last three knuckles is that you realy dont want to broke metacarpal bone on pinky finger, its easy as hell... People call that "boxer hand/boxer fist". Maybe work for you but please put attention for your viwers, someone can try that and put end on their sport or normal life for whole life because when you broke that bone you lose your full grip strenght. If you broke it from first two knuckles (almost imposible) you gonna recovery and continue regular life

I don't understand how those back o' the hand punches don't break YOUR hand. Those metacarpals have nothing to back 'm up. Never seen this approach to a Punch before, and definitely never heard anyone ever teach to aim with the bottom three knuckles before...for good reason. I've done Aikido for many years and I have no idea why this method would even be considered "Aikido style" considering Aikido has no punches. It has atemi, which is a general term for striking and a strike can be anything. A back fist, an elbow or even a knee. But Aikido doesn't really teach anything beyond a simple back fist, and not a strong one either. Just to distract. This looks more like a bad wing chun Punch. Take up boxing or karate if you want to learn to punch and Muay Thai for elbows and knees. Boxing is a great complement, did it for a while.

You hurt your hand when you struck with the back of it. Any strike with the back of my hand hurts like hell so I wouldn't do it. Also you were a little high. You need to be at the top of the abdomen - not high enough to hit bone. The solar plexus is a 'switchboard' of nerves that will incapacitate your opponent when you hit it.

I don't see a technique, just a wild punch that needs much too much distance to build power and if it misses you will be even more off balance than you were.
