You can see we use back blocks which are strips of drywall plasterboard layered with a high strength adhesive compound stuck to the back of the joints between the ceiling joists.

Back-blocking is a reinforcing system designed to minimise deformation and cracking/peaking of joints that can occur under a combination of adverse job and weather conditions or building movement, especially in large ceiling areas.
This reinforcing consists of laminating cut-to-size strips of plasterboard to the back surfaces of sheets directly behind joints using plasterboard cornice adhesive.
Back-blocking is strongly recommended as an added precaution for longitudinal recessed edge plasterboard joints in ceilings and for butt or end joint walls and ceilings. Where mid-span butt or end-joints are not required, but are used to minimise plasterboard wastage, these joints must also be back-blocked.
If your a professional and your business provides this service in your local area, wherever you are in the world, I invite you to add your skill set to a listing on my website global.maxkil.com/

You should look into back blocking the butt joins too. It essentially creates a recess along the butt join so you can plaster it completely flat to the ceiling.

Does it matter what side to put the adhesive on ?

Thanks for another video. Can I ask what sort of mud or adhesive are you using on the back blocks? Cheers 👍

Hi Ryan, we are using cornice cement, though there is a special back blocking cement designed to last a little longer

I'm from America and I guess we do things a wee bit different. Why does Australia require Back-Blocking? Do all ceiling joists get adhesive coated on them? What's the reasoning behind this? I appreciate the effort it takes to film this type of job and the editing it requires. Thanks for the hard work to bring us these types of vids. Maybe a vid of you sitting down and explaining the reasoning behind the differences betwixt our two countries ways of hanging drywall. I've noticed a vid where there was a 2" gap between ceiling drywall and the wall drywall. Then cornice molding was applied to fill in the gap. Why not butt the ceiling drywall up to the wall drywall? Seems like a good way for heat to penetrate from the attic space into the living space. Thanks again for your channel.

Hey mate, thanks for the comment, yeah its quite different to America, the boards 10mm thick, which is thinner than there so i suppose this strengthens that area because it can warp without it over time and the cornice you will see in the next video goes over the top, its totally same as the drywall itself actually maybe stronger so i gets sealed in the end very well, I will try do a video explaining that real soon.

I'm assuming that's adhesive you are putting on the joists/trusses. What product is that and do the blocks not require any screws to guarantee adhesion (it didn't look like they got screwed in) or did I miss something? Thanks.

Rookie mistake fixing butt joints on a ceiling joist if you follow Australian standards your meant to finish butt joints in between ceiling joints with stitching battens (wich you can buy from csr/boral) Fixing butt joints to ceiling joists is asking for trouble timber expands in heat and shrinks in winter Also I’d back block the Butt joints also for added strength

So it's okay to butt join between joists ? I haven't been able to find a clear answer for this online . I've seen the back blocking battens in Bunnings but wasn't sure of their actual application .

@@landlifem5872 it’s actually in the better if you but joint on a timber will definitely crack as timber shrinks causing but joint to crack There’s fixing applications online csr ,bgc, boral they clearly explain not to fix on a timber In saying that different states have different standards check with your local manufacturer
