My boyfriend makes a lot of pretty complicated chain maille projects, and after watching the video together, while I was reading comments to him, he immediately said "Cowgirl and Antonietta both probably need to use a thicker gauge jump ring". In the video, they were talking about using a 19 gauge. You would be surprised how thick a 19 gauge is. Remember too, the larger the gauge #, the thinner the wire. A 24 gauge wire is quite a bit thinner than a 19 gauge wire. Good luck! Hope this helps.

If your beads are falling out, you may need to try slightly smaller or slightly thicker gauge jump rings. I haven't used this technique on pieces that small, so I can't say for certain what will work. You'll just need to experiment with the sizes.

i strung my beads in the middle up the chain and they worked great! no loss of beads no matter what size. this is an awesome look and saves on bead use. thankyou for posting the vid.

As I said in the video, different beads and rings will have different results, and you may just need to try a few before you find the right fit. First, make sure that you're ring measurement is the outside diameter and not the inside diameter. Also, keep in mind that this will probably only work with round beads. After that, if your beads are falling out, try a slightly smaller ring.

I've usually found that if I'm using a thick enough jump ring, I don't really have a problem with them coming apart. Try to make sure that you are using a thicker gauge (especially with a larger jump ring) and they should be a little more sturdy.

I am starting a new adventure working with jump rings and this looks like fun :) The part where you open the rings to add the bead makes me think of a four petal flower. So in my head I can help but think: "open the flower, insert bead, hug the bead, add a flower" You might think it's weird, but an analogy like this might help someone younger learn this. :)

The shape and uniformity of the beads and rings can make a big difference in this technique. A round bead versus a faceted bead can require a completely different size or gauge ring. If the beads are falling out, I'd suggest experimenting with smaller rings or with a slightly thicker ring gauge.

Yes of course there are many possibilities. In this video for example we used a size 8mm bead, so you'll want to make sure the glass pearl beads you use are 8mm.

The earrings are all done. I hung some copper washer shapes at the bottom and they came out really cool! This technique is so fun I wish I had more 8mm beads so I could make a whole bunch of things. I would do a necklace next! These segments have a really nice drape to them.

Great tutorial. Really pretty design. Looks fun and like the pattern is basic Byzantine, except with large jump rings to accommodate the bead. I love and ah ha moment when I'm learning something new. Gonna make one of these bracelets tonight while I watch TV! TFS! Tip: When I do chain maille, I attach a jumbo paperclip onto the beginning rings. It gives something to hold onto in the beginning, esp. if the first couple are a smaller size like in this project.

I would recommend using a caliper to determine the size of the beads you're using. Then you'll have a better starting place for jump ring sizes to try. We carry jump rings in many sizes, and should have large enough ones for your beads. It is not only the ring diameter, but also the gauge (thickness) that can affect how the beads and rings work together. You could try using a thicker ring to see if that helps the beads stay in place.

Yes, gauge is very important in chain maille techniques. For the 8mm beads, I used 10mm jump rings in 18 gauge. For the 6mm beads, I used 8mm jump rings in 19 gauge.

Yes, it is basically captive inverted roundmaille using beads in the middle instead of the double rings.

We are also considering stringing the beads up the middle with a thin piece of semi translucent fireline cord. This would be so that the beads don't wiggle around and show their holes, not so much to keep them in, although it could help in that regard, too!

14 gauge is quite a bit thicker than what I've used for this. That will mean you will need a smaller bead, yes. If the 8mm bead is working for you, and they aren't falling out, then that should work just fine. If you'd like to fit larger beads in there, you'll need to use a thinner gauge, maybe something closer to an 18.

My experience is different - even with 1mm difference the bead falls out. However it works perfect when the ring inner diameter is equal to the bead diameter

I love this technique. very pretty. The only thing I would have to say I do not like is the bead hole thats visible with the lighter bead. It wasn't noticeable with the dark green beads. But otherwise awesome! Thanks for sharing. :-)

Try threading your beads on some fireline or similar after putting the jump rings on. It should prevent any escapes.

This works well with either drilled/undrilled crystals and stones, and undrilled pearls. It doesn't work well with Swarovski pearls as they usually have at least one ugly side to the hole that must be hidden. When I've made this with Swarovski pearls, I've used silk bead cord to string the pearls so that the hole cannot turn and be visible.

I tried this, with 4mm, 22 gauge jump rings. It didn't fit together very well, the jump rings were very tight. Going up to a 5mm jump ring, the beads fell right though. You could, of course, experiment to see what results you get.
