When you said “there is weeks work” on one lick, that was really helpful. Sometimes having a reasonable time frame for a reference really is nice so if something does take me a week or a month, I know it’s “ok”. Thanks much.

Finally who understands that Knopfler is country player at heart! He may have earned his chops with R&B and developed it for an 80s audience but you see other channels try and emulate his licks from a classic rock angle and it just sounds wrong.

One thing I love about Knopfler’s style is his melodic lead style. I wish I could play off of the chords like he does. But I can’t always wrap my head around the chord progression enough to do that.

Yeah! He's a master of playing to changes! Start with barre chords and pentatonics, and then add the weirder other CAGED shapes. It's definitely a "lifetime to master" sorta thing, but you'd be surprised how quickly the pieces start to fit together.

I love that you broke this technique down so well! I’ve been able to approximate parts of it before, but this will help to solidify the techniques for this style of playing. I don’t know if this is the proper spot to add this to the conversation, but recently I’ve been trying to learn the Hozier song, Jackie and Wilson. I found out he uses a baritone Gretsch electric to play it, and I was hoping to figure out an acoustic version on a standard guitar potentially. Is this even practically possible in the sense that it would sound right without the lowness of a baritone? I read somewhere that he originally wrote the song in the key of E, and it was too high for his voice, so he dropped the key down after which I thought well maybe I could sing it in E, but I would rather keep it most like his version. I’m sure you have a ton of stuff on your plate, but I thought I’d throw that out there. I’ll keep watching and liking whether you feel like messing with it or not! Cheers!
@EricHaugenGuitar4 жыл бұрын
Hozier's stuff is great! And yeah, he's always messing around with crazy tunings. How much work is it to adapt to the right hand technique? I hybrid pick (regular pick and use middle ring). If I had one guitarist to sound like it would be Mark, even though I don’t really want to sound just like anyone. I guess I am assessing if I should drop the pick.
@EricHaugenGuitar4 жыл бұрын
Hrmmm...I just tried and a lot of the mutes transfer over to hybrid picking (which is totally a cool technique and you should be proud of yourself for being able to do it). The only thing that doesn't transfer as well is the downstroke muting of two strings at a time. With a pick, you have to pass a little further through the strings, which slightly throws off the finger snap that comes behind it.

It'd be great to hear from someone who has taken the path and done well. At any rate, I appreciate these videos and everything you do here! Thanks.

@Alex Wiser Do a youtube search for “ David Cola Berkelee”. Hope this helps.
@EricHaugenGuitar4 жыл бұрын
oooh I have so many thoughts! PROS of a Music Degree: Berklee is great, it's intimidating as hell, but you'll immediately know where you stack up against all the other hot shots from around the world. It's the only music school where you can study non-jazz and classical. I literally had a class on John Lennon. Friggin' John Mayer sat behind me. I love music, I truly don't know what else I'd be good enough at to even try and make a career out of - maybe therapist, but i'm terrible at writing papers. CONS: Yes, it's very hard to "make-it" in the traditional sense. There's a lot of luck, strategy, perseverance, and honestly ruthlessness necessary to be big time. There's 2 paths: Do something that you like OK, makes responsible money, and do music on the side. Or go all in, risk not ever being rich, have to be very careful with the money you do make, but be doing the thing you know you LOVE. Both are good choices really. You can be happy either way!

Oh yeah, I've got a few.......One of my favorites was opening for Satanicide in NY, while their "road crew" heckled us the whole time. Called us "Brady Bunch Motherf*@kers" - and then, turns out the road crew was just the band in disguise - coveralls and baseball caps. hahahaha brilliant

Can you describe the amp/pedal setup?
@EricHaugenGuitar4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ivan! I set my amp volume quite low - at living room levels (to save my ears). I have the Greer Lightspeed setup with just the slightest bit of drive - about 1 o'clock. The reverb I add in post with plugins - I have more control over it that way :-)

@@tuxjunkie Did you ever get a Strat? I was a Tele guy too and then fell in love with my Stratocaster and play them about equally.

Brilliant lesson, Eric. Now I have Strat GAS!

I'm the worst! It is true though - only a strat can do that glassy, quacky thing!

You know, Wes Montgomery played with his thumb. Lines, chords, everything. Just the thumb. I understand he was pretty good.

@EricHaugenGuitar4 жыл бұрын
aha! I recommend using the slow-down functions in KZbin - there's that little gear icon. 3/4 speed is really useful! Space bar pauses, and your arrow keys for forward and back :-)
