If Meditation has a place in the early history of Christianity, it is big if true. If I may ask, who are these early Christian fathers and mothers that "taught us to guard the heart from negativity and emotion by laying aside all thought." What you have described here seems at least superficially similar to mindfulness meditation in Buddhism in that it is about clearing one's mind. I've noticed quite few Christians are apposed to the clearing of one's mind...

BEWARE!! this is NOT biblical meditation! Eastern religions are the once that practice this type of meditation which will open us up to external spirits and as christians we are not ordered to 'empty our minds' or 'not think' tho God say to meditate he has clearly told us in the bible to meditate on his word! That means we read scripture and ruminate it in our mind and not empty our mind but fill it with scripture. Emptying our mind opens us to spirits because we are in a very vaulnreable state thats how hypnosis works!!.....and it clearly says on the bible when we pray to NOT to repeat words to be heard by God which means no meaningless words! So no mantras if you really want to meditate meditate in gods words sit down and ease your mind and think and reapeat scripture! DO YOUR research!! Beforr you practice this!

What should I be thinking about while doing it? Should I just think about the mantra or about nothing?
@pauldemeyer12902 ай бұрын
Just the mantra, if thoughts come up and you become aware of your thinking you go back to the mantra or prayer Word. The idea is not to feed the mindless thinking and you can go deeper into the self, which is still and spacious. You take that stillness into your daily life, and find yourself less reactive in an emotional way. Your prayer life goes deeper as well and you’ll find over time that biblical verses suddenly become clearer. It does take discipline to do it every day, at least in the sitting down and taking time fir the practice, the meditation itself is effortless. Don’t concentrate, just be easy.

How is this kind of meditation biblical? Matthew 6:7 (KJV translation), the exact verse which is used in this video, says to don't use vain repetitions. Isn't a mantra a vain repetition? Also Matthew writes about praying to God. In this video the advice is to not speak to God, but to be with God. I know the video is not speaking about prayer, but is'nt this the opposite of what the bible teaches? Also our true self is not whole and peaceful, our true self is sinful. Our hearts are "deceitful above all things and desperately wicked". (Jeremiah 17:9).
@darrelltaylor34602 жыл бұрын
To B van V: Dear brother, I believe you're reading into the scripture. The mantra (call it a prayer word) is not a "vain" repetition. Christ was critiquing certain pagan practices of the day. Christians who meditate are not "pagans." In Christian meditation the heart is directed to God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit). We sit in Silence in the Presence of the Risen Jesus resting in Him. What is the test? As the video says... the "fruits of the Spirit" (Letter to the Galatians 5:22ff). Are these fruits manifest in one who meditates? I hope so! BTW... the heart mentioned in Jeremiah is not the "True Self" made in the Image of God. It is the "false self" that is "desperately wicked." Or, what Paul called the "old man" as opposed to the "new man" who rests in Christ.

Did you watch the video all the way through? Maranatha is an early Christian Prayer probably taught by Jesus as it is in Aramaic only the first Christians and Jesus spoke. It is in Scripture and means "Come Lord" It is in the NT and also in Greek in the NT. Look it up if you wish with a concordance. One can also simply use the name of Jesus as a "mantra" (which simply means a sacred word!)

I don’t agree with this method. I don’t think meditation in a Biblical sense is for us to clear our minds. And you showed Matthew 6:7. I think this applies to mantras. And then you instruct us to say a mantra. The literal meaning of the word meditate in the Bible is something to the effect of “chew the cud” like a cow does with his food. He’ll swallow it, bring it back up, and chew it some more. I think this is what we’re supposed to do with scripture. Think about it, then think about it some more until you gain more of an understanding. Meditation in the sense that you’re saying is a pagan mysticism practice and we should avoid that.

Hey, well, I'm not sure if it's safe for Christians! Prayer is a prayer. A silent prayer is a silent prayer, but this reinds me of a meditation! Medidation is dangerous.
@pauldemeyer12904 жыл бұрын
Thank you Playka. I’ve heard this said before, that by emptying the mind we let the devil in. When you are still , but present, there’s no way the demon can enter. The presence is the protection. The devil comes in through thoughts. Let’s say you think about what someone said, what you should’ve said and how wrong they were and before you know it you’re all worked up and upset, full of negativity towards that person and therefore against yourself. Desires start by thought and are fed by thought. When you stop feeding that thought process no negativity can enter. Our thinking is human thinking and does not allow the divine to be within, all we need to become is pure being. Prayer, good deeds, reading and meditation on scripture and contemplation all lead to that state of pure being. No danger there unless there’s spiritual pride, but for that we don’t need meditation...

@pauldemeyer12904 жыл бұрын
@@playka1619 yes, if it is true that we need the silence to have a sense of God being here and now, the question is how do we become silent or find inner stillness? You might notice that when you sit under the tree, or in your home, and just try to be still within a second thoughts will occur and you’ve left being still or being in the present moment. In other words, we humans don’t know stillness. Here is a practice you might find agreeable, using words from the Psalm 46: “be still and know that I am God,” repeat the same sentence over and over again but each time you repeat it, you drop the last word, so at the eighth repetition you only say Be”, then be silent for a while, and see what happens. When thoughts occur, go back to being still. See what happens.
