Learn about the magnetic particle inspection method of nondestructive testing, including basic steps for NDT with fluorescent magnetic particles using a magnetic wet bench. After watching the video, visit www.magnaflux.com/MPI for additional information and education resources.
In this video Magnaflux’s Brian Batteiger goes through the common steps of magnetic particle inspection on ferrous parts as outlined in ASTM E1444: Standard Practice for Magnetic Particle Testing. Brian takes you through surface preparation, system performance verification, magnetization set-up with a magnetic wet bench, bathing the part with 14A fluorescent mag bath, applying magnetic current, inspecting the part with an EV6000 LED UV lamp for indications and demagnetizing the part.
After watching the video, you can visit www.magnaflux.com/MPI for more education resources and mag particle product information.

Need to agitate particles, demag before the letting the centrifuge sit..also Head shot and coil shot may need to be demagnetized if the amperage is higher on the first shot.

Nice attention to detail! Before this video we ran the bath for 60 minutes to agitate the magnetic particles. We didn't specifically call it out, but we confirmed that our bath was also within the Gauss tolerance beforehand. You are correct, by ASTM E709, E1444, and E3024 standards you are to demagnetize the sample after taking it and then let it sit for 30 minutes for water or 60 minutes for oil. I appreciate you letting us know these details are critical to the viewer, so then our next video can be more thorough .

Fair bit missing from this video. AS5282 ring test required prior to testing parts, system performance must be confirmed! Centrifuge should be demagnetised after pouring the sample. Continuous wet method requires the fluid to be stopped just prior to the first shot. You absolutely cannot use a castrol strip to confirm adequate magnetic field strength, only a QQI or Hall effect meter or part with known defect can do that. ASTM E1444 is pretty clear on the only approved methods for confirming field strength and direction.

Good demonstration, but I think you should also kindly do a video of how the amperages of the various methods (Head Shot, Central Conductor and Coil Shot methods) are calculated and entered into the wet bench machine before magnetization.

I’ve got a hardened LS gear that refuses to give up any magnetism using the yoke pull away method. I’ve also struck it with a hammer to no avail. I don’t have a demag yoke. When I was at GE Power Systems Airfoils we did utilize such a yoke. But when engineers decided to machine a fillet in the base of the big rotor zeroes the demag process could take 20 minutes. A quality engineer thought we were joking (lying) until he tried it.

Nice vide, however I have few queries, One during coil shot, the magnetization level at the center is not enough. the part is slightly off center but still it should be on the bottom of the coil. Secondly residual magnetization is to be checked at the end of the part not in the center. Can you please comment on that?
@Magnaflux2010
@Magnaflux2010 3 жыл бұрын
Although your statement regarding the stronger field by placing the part near or at the bottom of the coil would be true in some cases, you can also run the parts anywhere inside the coil diameter. As long as you have a proven technique, and establish a 30 gauss field on the area to be inspected, and verified by a QQI, which is shown in the video, the part can be placed anywhere inside coil. The residual magnetism should be checked along the entire part, not just at the ends. In this case he starts in the middle of the part and did run the meter to the end. In some parts with complex geometries, the magnetism can indeed form anywhere on the part, therefore checking the entire part would be critical.

Can you provide more information about the Methods that are used for detection in Steam Turbine Rotor? Do you deal with such large components?
@Magnaflux2010
@Magnaflux2010 3 жыл бұрын
Typically - if the Steam Team Rotor is being checked after being placed in service - MPI inspections will be performed using the cable wrap method. This inspection is mainly focused on the turbine blades themselves. We have developed equipment specifically for turbine rotor inspections. The M-2030 Mobile Power Pack is specifically designed to produce 3000 amps with 90 ft of 4/0 cable in a single loop, which allows for rotor inspections using the cable wrap method. @@Magnaflux2010 As we know the MPI have serious disadvantage that the residual magnetization can lead to severe damage, why do we prefer it even though we have certain other reliable methods to test it? Why should we choose MPI over other NDT??
@Magnaflux2010
@Magnaflux2010 3 жыл бұрын
@@palashjain4203 The choice of test methods is always at the discretion of the end user. MPI is a reliable and proven method for use on ferrous metals. There are several techniques available to demagnetize parts after inspection. Gauss readings of less than 3 are typically inconsequential. MPI can provide very fast and accurate identification and reading of part flaws where other methods might be more costly. It is the responsibility of the relevant trained Level III technician to identify the best test method for every part.

How do you ensure that the equipment is safe to use with high current? For example if you are touching a Part and accidental apply the current?
@Magnaflux2010
@Magnaflux2010 4 жыл бұрын
Magnaflux machines are safe due to the extremely low voltage that the part physically sees. Most of our wet benches have a voltage of less than 20 volts - which is not high enough to overcome the resistance of the human body. OSHA regulations does not consider anything energized (thus requiring protection) unless the voltage is 50 volts or higher.
