Excellent video, just the one I was specifically searching for! I like the intro with the chart of the different states of red, green ,orange ,etc. I had no idea varied from state to state😮 I always understood it as if one is not a true registered dietitian, we can't specifically write out meal plans; but make 'suggestions' via lists & example options instead.

I’ve always stayed away from nutrition because I’ve typically had clients with thyroid issues. I believe all but one of my clients had thyroid issues and that one has a hormone patch. All these things have an influence on how people should eat and since I’m only a personal trainer, I stick to water and protein intake and educate on being mindful of how you feel before and after you eat. I guess a food journal would allow a deeper dive into something things and maybe help them realize their habits. I’m also in a red state so, that’s good to know.
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation 3 жыл бұрын
Ya if you have clients with medical issues, like thyroid issues, it’s best to refer to a dietitian. In red states I would still utilize outside sources like PN or food journaling software with clients who don’t have medical issues. You can still do that in a red state as long as you don’t overstep your boundaries.

@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation Жыл бұрын
Initial daily intake depends on their goals but we’ll usually have clients food journal for a few days to get an idea of what/how much they’re eating, then calculate initial macros. tdeecalculator.net is a great site for calculating a baseline TDEE, then adjust as necessary.

love the information and I've learn so much with you and you have guided me to tons of useful information, however now that been with a couple of trainers. why focus on weight lost when weight lost on a weekly basis can confuse a client. instead I focus on Body Fat % to my understanding, weight varies on multiple things, like water, food, ladies being blooded so and on. If I am wrong please correct me.
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words and support! It’s great to focus on both, weight loss and body fat. When a client is seeing you for fat loss they should still see the scale moving downwards, even if they’re putting on some muscle mass. This is because gaining muscle mass is going to take longer than losing fat mass. We test our clients body fat every six weeks but you should still definitely be tracking their weight as well if they’re interested in weight loss. Weighing in is not perfect, but it’s simple and effective.

I had a question, so as a Nutrition Coach, I can't write and give a Diet Chart right? I should just tell them to add something to their meal, or replace, or add some calories, reduce some calories, but I can't write and give exactly what they need to eat. That's the job of a Dietician, is that correct? I'm going to be a Certified Personal Trainer and also pursuing a Diploma Course in Sports Nutrition and Dietetics. I'm from India. Any insight would be appreciated!

Great video Jeff. I have a couple of questions. 1. With virtual training, if I live in a green state, and my client lives in a red state, which state's regulations do I have to follow? 2. As you said, 75% of clients want weight loss, but technically as personal trainers we are limited in scope. So, when advertising our services, can we safely say 'I help you lose weight' or something like that?
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! To your first question, I always say go with the more strict state regulations if you want to be as safe as possible. There are no current laws that I am aware of that directly address that issue. That being said, even in those states you can still have clients food journal. You just can’t give them as much feedback on that journaling legally. To your second question we can 100% advertise being able to help our clients lose weight. Most of my marketing is about weight loss because that’s what people want.

Lol wtf why would there be states that require a registered dietician im sure their rates are extraordinary! If you're an online coach do the rules even apply. Is this kind of like a grey zone at the end of the day like whose gonna find out, the good nutrition police?
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation 4 жыл бұрын
The rules do apply if you’re an online coach. That doesn’t mean that people will actually follow them though. How many people do you know that actually drive the speed limit? It’s not a grey zone. It’s illegal to perform nutrition in certain states and countries without the proper education. The odds of being caught are pretty slim though. The only way I could see someone getting in trouble is if they recommend something to a client, and then that client gets negatively effected by their recommendation and that client decides to take their trainer to court. Unlikely but possible.
@bane3991

Kile Noe, The AMA lobbied for strict licensing for medical many decades ago. They said the reason why they did it was to keep the amount of doctors low which keeps doctors pay very high(supply and demand of labor). They admitted this. They said doctors work better when they get paid more money which is insane but the politicians bought it and now we see very high medical costs today as opposed to institutions carrying on the way they feel as though is correct and the AMA will not license you from any institution out of its scope and those institutions listen to AMA in regards to not admitting as many people into their programs each year to suppress the number of doctors. So I can't picture it being any different for dietitian. They likely lobbied for it in these states. So if 100,000 dietitians existed and 500,000 nutritionists existed, they just knocked out 500,000 other people which inflates their wages since they eliminated competition. Unfortunately, everything is politicized including medical which is just flat out wrong. The politicians themselves might have just woke up 1 morning and did this themselves but usually a group of people lobby for it. In the case of politicians taking it into their own hands, the intentions are there because they want to give people the best advice possible but nutrition isn't overly complicated and this is not at all needed for the general population. Our lower class has the most obese people, they make the least amount of money so they need nutrition coaching the most but cant afford it because dietitians cost so much. It's a messed up system.

Is "counseling" the legalistic verbiage here? If you're calling it education or something else, you're sidestepping what counseling is.
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation 8 ай бұрын
If you’re in a green state you can call it whatever you want. Coaching, counseling, whatever. There are certain things you still shouldn’t do such as work with a client who has any condition or disease. You also shouldn’t write meal plans. There would be other things that would also be out of your scope, but in many areas a lot of nutritional work is legal to do with clients as a personal trainer.
