This worked out so well for you I think I'm going to do my WWII German tank. I dug a hole in my backyard and made it deep enough to hang the German tank from 4 cables. It is going to work out great because the overhead power lines running to my house is perfect to hang that monster and supply the current needed. Great vid.

NB friendly heads up to our murican friends , UK electricity can give off vapours, (best to leave a door for window open) if there is a build up of these vapours it can start to reverse the process of plating. In extreme cases you could loose the whole bike when attempting this way, apart from the rubber and plastic items.

I watched all your vids soda blasting , plating and sonic cleaning and have decided to zinc plate my car. I don't have any money to buy zinc but I remembered you said boats have them. So I'll put some vinegar and soda in the trunk and drive my car off a quayside next to a boat and hook it up to an overhead powerline then I'll have a rust free car. Thanks Ichi.

It looks real, but is this a joke? At 2:42 the sacrificial zinc plate wasn't even touching the battery wire it was supposedly attached to. The battery wire wasn't stripped where it went through the hole in the zinc plate. The copper wire that was exposed looked to be too high to touch any of the zinc plate.
@RickMurphy66

Clearly the wire was stripped and tightly contacting the Zinc. Not sure who's glasses you had on but maybe you should consider trading them old one's in for a new pair.

+Rick Murphy Wow, why are you being such a dork? Anyway, at 2:42 everyone can clearly see the wire is not stripped for it's loop through the zinc anode plate and the little bit of wire that is stripped at the end is barely if at all touching the zinc anode.

Just a clarification, zinc isn't "rust-proof", or even really corrosion-resistant. Zinc plating is a sacrificial medium, meaning it corrodes so the steel doesn't. To protect the zinc from oxidization (rusting) and to harden the surface, you then have to apply a layer of chromate, typically clear chromate. Think of it like paint. You've got the steel of the body, then the layer of paint that gives it color, and then on top of that you have the clear-coat. Zinc is the same way; you have the steel, the zinc, and then the "clear-coat" of chromate.

Not criticizing your video, in fact, it is really good for anyone that is a DIY'er. I want to point out that your tumbling process may not have removed all the chrome. It did remove chrome plating that has become "delaminated" (not sure of the proper term) due to oxidation of the base metal. Corrosion did not occur over the entire part. What you accomplished is to smooth the surface appearance for visual appeal. For stripping off the plating, within reason, use hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid). Hydrochloric acid is used to remove the chrome in production shops for the purpose of re-chroming. Removal time is equivalent to plating time. in most cases (pH determines the time on known thickness). Chrome is approximately 1/6th the thickness of nickel. Most chrome double plating ( meaning chrome over nickel, no copper in the process, such as toasters, bread boxes, Harley-Davidson) keeps the part in the nickel bath for approx. 32 minutes and less than 5 minutes in the chrome bath. Hydrochloric acid is available in hardware store and big box stores. Do not leave in overnight!!!. Depending on the solution of HCl (pH), it may take only 10 minutes. You should be able to see something happening. Rinse the part thoroughly. If you own a tumbler, after stripping, drop said parys into the rocks to achieve the smooth finish. Sorry, I do not have recommendation for the time the part is the strip bath because plating comes in various thicknesses and acid for the consumer is weak compared to what is used on a production plating line. Regardless. this is fun. WORK SAFE, know the dangers. Acids can become airborne and corrode everything in your shop, including your lungs. This is not something you try without investigating. Proper ventilation is necessary or do it outside. The acid bath for stripping does not need electric current. Yes, residual chrome can be plated over. Results will not be as good as the original process. Zinc is sacrificial, always turns white after time and is no where near as good as chrome or cadmium, it is just shiny in the beginning and EPA friendly. If you find a mistake in my information, please add the corrected info. I am trying to help. Personally, I despise zinc after knowing the quality of cadmium most of my life.

I took apart some used alkaline batteries, extracted the zinc paste core, mixed that with water, and use a graphite lead from a pencil as an electrode. An alkaline electrolite will plate slower but achieves greater thickness.

Very comprehensive video. I use this same process all the time. One thing I would keep in mind if you have to use pickle juice, check the ingredients for yellow number 5. It will give your parts a yellow tint, still pretty bad ass.

The zinc will be deposited on the part that is connected to the negative of the battery. You just confused me by connecting the red wire to the negative. However you've done a badass galvanization.

I wonder if it would be possible to zinc plate naked metal on a car when repairing rust. If I remove the rust first and and then build a incasement around the naked metal and do a zinc plating before painting. That would be interesting to see.
